$100 Apparently, her classes consist of
striking, grappling, and some ground work...

But where else am I supposed to go to train ju-jitsu around here?

Or find anything besides boxing in the Greater Chicago area?

Hey everyone, I’ve been going back and forth for quite some time now about whether I should commit to training ninjutsu or go with kyokushin, but I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger on karate. After doing a bit of digging online, I discovered there’s a club located right in my neighborhood near the Ravnica area at the G.M. Matoš Elementary School. I’m coming from over in the Borongaj district, so it's a pretty quick trip. I headed over there today, having seen a flyer posted up—it looked like someone just typed it out in Word using a massive, bold font—stating that training sessions are held on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM in the small gym on the upper floor. Well, I showed up today at 7:05 PM, only to find the entire place locked tight. There wasn't a soul in sight to let me in, and I couldn't get a single door open. Does anyone happen to know how I can actually get inside? 🙂

First off, I am glad you chose Kyokushin; Ninjutsu is excellent too, but this style likely suits you better, much like it does me. To be brief, you really need to arrive at the gym at least 15 minutes early—those are just the rules. Use the same entrance you used before. If you are late, it will be difficult to join the session. Everything is locked up exactly on schedule and strictly monitored because there have been issues with theft in the past. In the event that you do run late, you have to knock very loudly on the door so the janitor, who is always stationed there watching our training, lets you in. He is the only one with a key. So, either show up ten minutes early or knock hard on the door—don't bang on the glass. If you are persistent, he will eventually come to open it for you. Plenty of people come to watch, but they often arrive late and start pounding on the door after everything is already locked, which ends up deafening the janitor.

Thanks for the info. Now it makes sense why I couldn't get in; I honestly thought I had the wrong place or that training had been canceled. 🙂
Ninjutsu is great, but my impression is that it requires an immense amount of discipline and endless drilling to actually learn anything, whereas in Karate, you pick up concrete techniques relatively quickly. Alright, I'll be there for training tomorrow. What should I bring in terms of clothing?

Personally, I wouldn't go there.

Try MMA instead; you have Stipe, Robin Palmer3, and I think there are a few other clubs out there—just pick whatever works best for you. It’s solid. And you don't have to step into a ring for those wild brawls you see online if that's what you're worried about. If you want to get back into JJ later, this will give you a great foundation. You might actually prefer it. 😉

If nothing else, try Judo or Muay Thai, I don't know...

I mean, I wouldn't really mind. As long as there's an address for some club or something, I guess it's fine.

Word is there’s JJ, maybe that Thai boxing spot over in a suburb like maybe Naperville, or that Knez Mislav club?

If I’m not mistaken, there’s some grappling or maybe even UF happening over at the YMCA—near the Radio VG studios, I think. 🙂 Training takes place in the same gym where that Pinky judo club practices—maybe try reaching out to them directly to get the full scoop?

Knocked out...

Two new branches have just joined the Black Dragon – Alliance association...

16 Franjo Lučić Promenade, Greater Houston...
Instructors: Dubravko Čolić, purple belt; Damir Mirenić, blue belt...
Just a quick heads-up regarding the training schedule for those interested... we'll be running sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 PM, and then again on Saturdays at 5:00 PM...
You can reach me at 555-019-8724 if you need anything else... I don't have access to private email addresses or any personal contact information from the forums. If you're looking for someone specific, your best bet is probably just to send them a direct message through the site if they're active... though I can't guarantee anyone will actually see it.

Just to be clear here, we're talking about BJJ, so there isn't any confusion...

Justin Watson58's recommendations—you really ought to take a look at those if you want to stay ahead of the curve...👍

Thanks for the heads-up. I sent an email, just waiting to hear back about classes, registration, and dues.👍

Yesterday I was over at A.G. Matoš for some Kyokushin training, but honestly, it’s just a revolving door of belts at this point—and I'm already twenty-one. While I was there, some woman mentioned there’s a Jiu-Jitsu class held over on the fourth floor. Does anyone actually know the exact location of that?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to pick your brains on something. I spent ten years in the pool, but I eventually hit a wall and quit—mostly because I just wasn't feeling it anymore, and honestly, my college schedule made it impossible to keep up. Now, I’m looking to get back into something recreational, maybe basketball or water polo, but let's be real, I'm probably too old for that now. 🙂 Basically, I'm thinking about picking up a martial art like kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. I'm not looking to compete or anything; I just want to stay in shape and not let myself get totally soft. I need sessions around 8 PM since I spend most of my day stuck at the university, and I'm located somewhere on the east side of town—think areas like the suburbs near the stadium or the eastern residential districts.

Thanks..

Well, how did you not realize that was the youth program? For adults, there are two options: one out in the suburbs, and a newer one over at the municipal sports complex.

You might want to check out profightstore.com and look through their directory (it's the first link in my sibling's post).

What’s the current scene here for things like IPSC? What exactly does someone need to get started with that kind of stuff?

Dennis Survival Jiu-Jitsu. It's at 55 Subiceva. They aren't taking new students right now...

You've got ninjas nearby... Plus Kempo, Hapkido, and Kenjutsu right across the street on Marticeva.

Oh, also try heading over to the primary school on Harambasiceva (situated between Zvonimirova and Maksimirska—right by the Chicago Banka station). They definitely have Judo, and likely traditional Jiu-Jitsu too. You enter through the back entrance, not the main door. Just ask the janitor or someone about evening training sessions. Check it out and see what works for you.
