Bradley Edwards56 said:Hey, seeing a lot of experts here, so I figured I'd ask.

I'm 20 and haven't done any combat sports before. Haven't been active lately either, so my cardio is basically non-existent.

I'm looking to get into something like MMA, but with a focus on stand-up rather than ground work. Though I guess it should be both. Just something effective enough if I ever need to defend myself on the street.🙂

I'm living over in the East Side, though that’s not a requirement—just a bonus. I saw some posts about a local gym nearby, but that seems more focused on grappling, right?

Not interested in competing. Head strikes are fine, provided there's decent protection. I don't want to show up to class or head home with a broken nose or a busted face from training.😛

Sorry if this is a bit disorganized. Hope it makes sense.

Anyway, help me out. Any recommendations?

If you aren't allowed to promote specific clubs here, just shoot me a DM. Not sure how the rules work on this place.

Look... since you're already over on the East Side, it might be a mistake not to try out a few sessions at the local MMA academy (www.ufktresnjevka.hr). If you want to learn wrestling basics without going too hard on it, maybe start there until you get the fundamentals down, then switch to something more striking-focused.😉

Eventually you’ll get some decent striking training there, and honestly, you can probably poke around and find out where else you can go to actually sharpen those skills properly.

mistyeagle94 said:I mean those acrobatics and stuff—what’s the actual term for that? Is there a specific name, or did Team Ryouku just "invent" it themselves? Like, is it strictly their signature style... and I'm not talking about the movie here... 🙂

Could you find anything similar in a place like Cleveland? If so, where exactly?

Well, since nobody knows, I guess they don't have that kind of thing in the Midwest... what a shame... ah...

Well, maybe there is. Check if there’s some gymnastics club in the area, then head over there and just ask. 😁

Hey everyone.
I’m looking for some advice regarding footwear for the gym. My daughter has just started Taekwondo, and she doesn't have the right shoes yet.
Since her instructor hasn't given us any specific guidance on what to get, I was hoping you all could help me out a bit. What should I be looking for to buy her? Thanks!

Nicole Lee4, why don't you just ask the coach?

offtopic: Speaking of Taekwondo—I was walking past the medical center near the old airfield today and noticed a sign from that TKD club over by the Boeing plant. It says "TKD Self-Defense," with a heavy emphasis on women's classes.
I’m actually curious about how that setup looks. Don't hit me with the "go check it out yourself" line, because I really don't have the time. 🙂

Well, because he specifically mentioned he doesn't care about anything except the soles being thin enough so he can actually work his finger movements during drills.
As for me, I’m honestly too embarrassed to buy any pair that won't let me run properly. I nearly killed myself running in my regular sneakers the other day.

My daughter does Taekwondo and uses soft Adidas slip-ons.

Personally, I’ve been rocking these white Star Ace sneakers from Borovo for a while now, and honestly, they are just fantastic, especially since they won't break the bank if you aren't particularly obsessed with big designer labels... 🙂

Look, the brand really isn't the point. That’s all I meant. As long as you can move your toes comfortably, nothing else matters.
Now, finding shoes that allow for that toe wiggle room is actually pretty easy for me, but my real dilemma was wondering if she'd end up slipping around on the hardwood court. That was the biggest question mark for me. Thanks for the help.

No worries at all—reach out whenever you can. Dealing with equipment procurement is actually one of my main responsibilities, so I'm already set up to handle it!

While I was there, some woman mentioned there’s a Jiu-Jitsu class held over on the fourth floor. Does anyone actually know the exact location of that?

It’s only been like that for the last two years because that massive group just randomly fell apart. Now you’ve got people drifting in and out—a few big names still train, but mostly it's just hobbyists.

Dugo Selo is actually solid. Until another big crew forms up in downtown Chicago, I’d recommend D.S., though it’s probably a trek for you.

Check out the local sports complex—about six months ago, the "Sosai" club opened up there with one of our top fighters. They run sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 PM. Use the Rost Sport entrance; they have adult classes too. For more details, hit up

I've been getting into recreational boxing for a few months now, and honestly, everything's going pretty well. But I have noticed one thing—my calves and shins start hurting during training, especially when we're working on jumps, skipping rope, and stuff like that. It feels almost like my calves are cramping up. I guess I'm wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this or how I could deal with the pain?

If you’re dealing with muscle cramps, maybe try some magnesium—powdered tablets, specifically.
I know a few people who managed to clear up their cramping issues after a long hiatus just by using magnesium...

Same thing happened to me. Magnesium fixed it right up.

A friend of mine is wondering if there's a Capoeira club in the VZ area—or maybe something similar? I've been getting him pretty stoked about martial arts lately, so he's looking to dive in... ANYONE HAVE THE SCOOP? 🙂
