Judo—like, preschool age? I’ve heard a ton of little kids are heading over to Mladost for judo classes, so I was wondering if anyone actually has a phone number or a website for that club?

I have been thinking quite a bit lately about picking up some kind of martial art, mostly just so I don’t feel completely helpless if some random lowlife decides to pick a fight with me on a Saturday night. Beyond that, I suppose I am actually looking for a genuine hobby to occupy my time. I think I would gravitate more toward something defensive in nature—you know, focus on defense rather than just aggression. However, I find myself in a bit of a predicament because I am only eighteen, and I am having a difficult time locating any clubs that offer programs specifically designed for older beginners. Since I am based out of the Upper Midwest area, I was wondering if anyone might happen to know of any reputable clubs in the vicinity of places like Sioux Falls or maybe near Fargo? Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just checked out the K1 rulebook... Is this why people call K1 "watered-down Muay Thai"?

-Using the head or elbow to deliver a blow
-Charging inside the opponent's arms with the head held low (inducing a head-butt)
-Attacking an opponent who turns around and shows his back (unless the opponent loses his will to fight)
-Attacking the back of the head with a punch
-Attacking more than once while holding the opponent's kicking leg, or while holding the opponent's neck with both hands

The real differences are simple—no headbutts, no elbows, and Thai boxing uses 5x3 minute rounds while K1 does 3x3... plus the scoring is totally different.

Does anyone happen to know where I can find some decent Judo training around this part of the country? I'm looking for a good spot nearby, so if you have any leads, please let me know! Thanks so much!

Nowhere in the immediate area. If you're looking at Europe, maybe France, but beyond that, I assume it’s not exactly a priority for you anyway.

Since this thread is getting pretty long, I apologize if someone already asked this.
I'm looking for a place in the city where I can train with a Bo staff. I’ve noticed the technique mentioned in a few Nanbudo clubs, but they don't really go into detail about it. I'm also wondering where the best place would be to pick up a decent staff.

Check out Aikido, Ninjutsu, or classic Jujutsu clubs.

Look, a Bo isn't just some standard stick you pick up off a shelf. They come in all sorts of sizes and thicknesses... it’s a highly individualized thing. Honestly, you're better off just grabbing the first sturdy piece of wood you find in the woods; that’s how you get the most authentic Bo possible. Otherwise, if you really want to shop around, check out Paart.

And one more thing... forget about the idea that you can just go somewhere and learn the Bo specifically. There is a massive amount of stuff you have to master before anyone is even going to let you touch a staff.

You're probably not going to find that easily here in the States. Look, unlike jo staff, it's not exactly mainstream in the martial arts scene—it's about 6 feet long and a total pain to lug around. There are competitions for bo staff out there, but definitely nothing like that locally, and I haven't heard anyone using it in Aikido classes. As far as Aikidoka go, the only time I've even seen it used was on a DVD by Mitsugi Saotome. It's likely part of Ninjutsu, but finding dedicated training like actual Bo-jutsu? Good luck.

If you're genuinely interested, my club's focus for June is bojutsu. Send me a private message if you want to drop by and check out how we run our training.

...Alright, here’s the deal: I’m 21 years old, living out in a small town near Podsed, and I’ve reached that point where I want to actually get serious about training a martial art—something like MMA or maybe Aikido... If anyone could point me toward some decent clubs in the area, I’d appreciate it. Also, I need a reality check: am I already too old to start this? Just looking for some basic guidance and honest advice here... thanks.

You really need to pick based on what you actually like. What's the goal?
There's a massive gap between learning a skill like Aikido and training a sport like MMA, BJJ, or Muay Thai.

If you're looking to compete or test your limits through actual live sparring, go with the second group (MMA, Muay Thai, etc.).

But if you just want to relax, get in shape, find some zen, and learn how to defend yourself when some 110-pound guy on crutches tries to take you out with an ice cream cone, then definitely Aikido.

Is it Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai?......something’s definitely fishy here.

So, Muay Thai. Optional shaved head, just like that one article.
One side screams LOVE and the other screams HATE. You’ve got this so-called "Mongol" fighter stepping into the ring to the sound of some weird Thai flute ritual, backed by a full symphony orchestra. Then comes the "oshaydari" while the crowd in the corner yells "AEEEEEEE" at every single strike, whether it actually lands or not. Eventually, you end up becoming a champion in some obscure WCBBTUR version—or whatever other unheard-of variant they cook up. Solid choice. 😉

Here’s a rundown of the major sports and clubs across the States:
This link looks like some old directory page for a combat sports shop. Not seeing much useful info here.

UFC is just "street fighting" anyway. You should probably check out the local MMA gym in Brooklyn instead. Good luck!

Is there anyone from Cleveland who could list all the martial arts available in town?
If this has already been covered in previous posts, sorry, I just can't get through 54 pages of threads.
I'm specifically looking for practical, effective striking styles involving hands and feet. I'm guessing kickboxing fits that description.
I think Savate or boxing exist too. Maybe I'd prefer something Eastern.
I don't know exactly what I want yet. I figure the first step is seeing what's out there, checking out some training sessions, and then deciding.

Thanks!
