Maybe write about something you actually find interesting. If it’s nearby, I suppose the old forum regulars might offer some advice over time.

Kate Barnes9 said:Hey. Does anyone know if there's a club in the city—or even just the suburbs—that does full contact? I’ve had some experience with combat sports from years ago, and I’m looking to get back into the swing of things and find my form again.

Seriously? Is everyone just sitting here in total silence???🤷

What’s your take on this "Barun Trenk" club?

And I find myself wondering, truly, what the vibe of Barun Trenk is actually like? Given that I’m likely planning to relocate to the city this coming fall, I simply must know. I’ve heard whispers that they make a trek out to Thailand every single year... isn't that just the most extravagant way to spend a season?

My take? Just get off your butt, leave the computer alone, and head down to the gym to see if you actually like the vibe. Nothing beats trying out a workout in person.

I think everyone’s opinion on a specific gym is going to be different. It really just depends on what you're looking for and what kind of training style fits your personality. Honestly, it's best to just go check it out for yourself. I tend to trust my own gut, because I hear people trashing places all the time, only to find out later that the place was actually perfect for me.

Well, I suppose we can certainly discuss the merits of a well-formed backside, but at this particular juncture, I find myself wondering about my own circumstances; I am simply not in a position to make a trip down to the city just yet. Currently, I am training down in the South, so my glutes aren't exactly under the microscope quite yet.
That brings me to my actual question: does anyone else in this circle happen to be hailing from the Tri-State area?

James Anderson8, I didn't mean to sound mean 🙂 I just figured it’s better to go see for myself. It seems like everyone here has a different opinion, and that usually just leads to endless arguing. Still, there's nothing wrong with asking 🙂 why not? I have no issue with that, but honestly, the best answer I ever got was when I finally got off my butt and went out to see what they were actually offering 😁

I'm curious about what kind of martial arts actually involve using a katana—any kind at all—and where I could find training sessions. I’d also need to know about the costs involved. If possible, I'd prefer somewhere near the Convention Center.

Would a plastic one 😁work?

Look, if we’re talking about disciplines that involve working with a Japanese blade—the katana, specifically—you’ve got Iaido/Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, Kendo, Ninjutsu... and I’m sure the other folks on this board can keep that list going. We’ve gone over the specifics of each one on here plenty of times already, so honestly, just make the search function your best friend.

Look, I’ve been training out of Trenka for about three years now on a recreational level, and honestly? I’m loving every second of it. The setup at this club is solid. They actually bother to separate the serious fighters from the recreational crowd, which is huge. Plus, if you want to fly solo, they offer one-on-one sessions too. There’s seriously something for everyone in there. The best part is the scheduling—they’ve got morning groups, afternoon groups, and they don't even take a break in the summer. They keep the grind going all year round. They even run these internal tournaments just for the recreational guys. We use the big gloves, helmets, and standard 2x1.5 rings. It’s a blast!

Thanks, crimsonbison10😬>

Does anyone know where I can actually learn Iaido or Kenjutsu?
Ideally somewhere near the Convention Center area.
If you have an answer, maybe drop a link?

Honestly, if you’re looking for anything decent near the Fairgrounds, you’re probably out of luck. For Kenjutsu, there's DanGun over by Quartermaster Square. If you're into Iaido, you could look at KK Agatsu or KK Samobor, but don't bother unless you want to wait until the fall for enrollment.

I'm looking for a contact number or a lead on someone in the NYC area who teaches Xing Yi and Ba Gua. Also wondering where people usually train these styles around here. Thanks.

I wonder, is there actually an Aikido club that holds training sessions near the newer parts of the suburbs here in the States?

No.
But honestly, I don't see why that’s even an issue. It’s like asking why someone would drive from New Jersey to Philadelphia just for a specific workout—it's a trek, sure, but people do it. Personally, I end up commuting all the way to Columbus or even flying out to Chicago just to get my Iaido fix. So, I really can't wrap my head around why holding a practice session on the other side of town would be considered some kind of insurmountable obstacle.

The real issue here is that I’m still two years away from even being able to sit behind the wheel for my driver's test

I caught a glimpse of these long, blue transit vehicles carrying massive crowds of people. Some of them even run along dedicated light rail tracks. I’m pretty sure you could use them to get from one end of the city to the other without breaking a sweat.😁

Look, it’s simple. When you're just doing recreational training, the contact is way lighter. The whole focus is on sharpening your technique and building up your conditioning, not on getting "battle-hardened" for a fight...
