Can anyone explain how to properly overclock an Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz
I ran a stress test on Everest, and here are the temperatures

Personally, I wouldn't touch the overclocking settings just yet; those temperatures you're seeing look quite high to me.
First things first, you really ought to invest in some better cooling solutions.

This machine is an old relic from 2004, though I have attempted to bolster its performance over the years. Given my reluctance to throw good money after bad on such aging hardware, I find myself wondering if it is even possible to overclock this 🤷

So, I’m planning on picking up a new PC build. I’ve settled on an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, an ATI Radeon HD 4870, and 2 GB of RAM. Now, if the E8500 clocks in at 3.16 GHz by default, how far can I actually push the overclocking before things get ugly? And what kind of cooling setup am I going to need to keep it from melting? Also, regarding the 4870—is there a specific program I should use to tweak that, and what kind of thermal management does a card like that require?

Ugh, here we go again with another ridiculous claim...

Apparently, you can push this thing to an overclock of 5.84GHz (sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it?)—provided, of course, that you're using liquid nitrogen cooling.
As for the graphics card, they claim you can hit a core clock of 927MHz and memory speeds of 4421MHz, though again, that’s only if you're soaking it in liquid nitrogen.
And if you actually decide to attempt such a massive undertaking, you'll need a power supply rated for at least 750-1000W just to keep things running.

Sure, you could overclock it to 5.84GHz—sounds impressive, doesn't it?—if you’re willing to drown it in liquid nitrogen.
You could push the GPU to 927MHz on the core and 4421MHz on the memory, assuming you've got a tank of liquid nitrogen on standby too.
And if you actually attempt something that ridiculous, you'll need at least a 750-1000W power supply just to keep the lights from flickering.

I'm asking nicely for a decent answer here.

Well, we can't really know for sure, can we? Every processor behaves differently. For instance, one might top out at 3.8 GHz while another hits 4 GHz easily; there just isn't a universal rule when it comes to these things.
Regarding the E8500... if you're already planning on overclocking, wouldn't it make more sense to go with the E7200 instead? You'll save some cash and still walk away with solid performance.
What kind of power supply are you leaning towards? Are you looking for air cooling or a liquid loop? And what about the case? Come on, give me some actual details to work with!

I suspect that even with a basic stock cooler, you could probably push that 8500 up to 4GHz without having to jump through too many hoops or deal with excessive hassle...

Could someone please share their current CPU and motherboard temperatures? 🙂

Can anyone tell me if there’s actually any way to cool down an HD 3870 x2 and a Q6600 using just air coolers? Or maybe—if it's even possible—using some kind of water cooling setup to hit $233? I'm also looking at heat sinks that would cost roughly $233

My readings show an open case CPU temperature of 48 degrees, while the motherboard is sitting at 39.

I wonder just how far one can push the overclocking limits on this hardware

Thanks for all the insight...
Just run CPU-Z to check your core and socket, then maybe Google it to see what kind of speeds other people have managed to hit...

I was browsing some tech forums earlier, and I find myself wondering just how many people actually understand the relationship between the FSB and the multiplier.
For my setup, the FSB sits at 100.2MHz with a multiplier of 20...
By the way, I'm running a Northwood-128 core.

btw my core is Northwood-128

Yeah, the FBI gets multiplied by the multiplier.
Maybe try sucking on the CPU fan for a second to drop the temps down a bit.

I completed the task yesterday; there isn't a speck of dust left now that the casing has been opened up.

Well, you just keep bumping up the FBI, continuing as long as things remain stable (meaning, as long as you can still actually boot into Windows), and then you gradually nudge the CPU voltage up a bit, followed by another slight increase to the FBI, and so on...

But honestly, you aren't going to see much of a performance gain with an Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz; it's just such a weak little chip...
