USA vs. Ecuador 1 (1.53 at Bet365, William Hill; 1.60 at DraftKings, FanDuel, etc..) (2-0)
The 2015 Copa America is finally kicking off. As the host nation, the USA is still chasing that elusive first continental title—they're actually one of the few teams left that hasn't hoisted the trophy—and playing on home soil gives them their best shot ever. They looked seriously impressive during the World Cup in Brazil, navigating a "Group of Death" by taking down Spain (2-0) and Australia (3-1), even if they did drop a 2-0 decision to the Netherlands. In the Round of 16, they ran into the hosts, Brazil, and suffered a heartbreaking exit on penalties after a 1-1 draw through regulation. I say heartbreaking because, honestly, they were every bit as good as Brazil on that day. Today, they open the tournament with basically the same squad that played this past summer, though Vargas might be a question mark since his form has been absolute garbage lately (even if he’s slated for the starting XI). With Vidal, Valdivia, and Sanchez leading the charge up front, they have massive firepower, and the backline anchored by Bravo in goal with Isla, Medel, Jara, and Mena looks rock solid.
On the other side, Ecuador is a dangerous outfit when they actually have their full squad available, but they are far from complete today. They’ll be heading out onto the pitch without A. Valencia (Man Utd) and Caicedo (Espanyol)—their two heavy hitters—plus Ayov is sidelined with an injury from yesterday. Back in Brazil, when they actually had their best players, they managed to beat Honduras 2-1, lost 2-1 to Switzerland, and ended things with a scoreless draw against France in a meaningless match.
In terms of recent prep, the USA only played one friendly, a narrow 1-0 win over El Salvador, while Ecuador put in two matches, a 1-1 draw and a 4-0 blowout against Panama.
I think the USA is a massive favorite here, both because of the home-field advantage and the sheer quality of the lineup they're fielding today. I seriously doubt Ecuador can hold off those lightning-fast Americans who spend all 90 minutes hunting the opponent's goal. Honestly, I see the USA going incredibly far in this tournament; they might even go all the way and finally grab it.
