Lisa Hernandez3 said:I don't quite follow—how would they be any more mentally stable than the crowd over at the Psychology department? I guess there’s a certain logic to introducing something like a "trans-forum," especially regarding the Women's Corner. Back at my psych department, we recently had a session centered on specific questions about being transgender, and we also had dedicated "corners" for gay topics and analyses of homophobia. And, well, America could probably stomach that, of course. These are usually active, widely read subjects. Topics on feminism could also fall under that umbrella—or maybe even discussions on androgyny. Then there's the whole role-playing aspect on forums—adopting an opposite-gender handle (which isn't very common, though apparently some advanced folks do it). And finally, all that fluff Oprah would dive into—fashion transformations, Saša Broz's secret hairstyles... things like what color underwear you wear, your bedroom setup, or why Danijela Trbović was so irritating to certain people, or why Dražen Ilinčić is almost never annoying to anyone. It would probably generate quite a bit of buzz, both in the media and regionally.

Theoretically speaking, if we actually did this, who on earth would moderate it? image

😁

I think I’ve already mentioned that I tend to view briskpuma23’s take on being transgender through a much more metaphorical lens than the literal definition of the word! To be honest, I actually found that description of it being a subforum for genderless Americans, anti-nationalists, stateless people, and xenophiles absolutely charming.
I honestly feel like we should just leave that whole old North American era out of the conversation entirely, because let's be real—nobody around here in the States cares about that stuff anymore!😬
So, just thinking out loud here—if we were actually looking at this from a purely theoretical standpoint, who on earth would even be tasked with moderating us if it ever came down to it? image

😁

Well, if you really do get to make the choice! 😬I guess I'll just go ahead and take her! I honestly feel like I’m just trying to make sense of things, but if there is any way to approach this with a little more intelligence and a bit more common sense, I am all for it! I mean, her too! I honestly can't help but feel like things have been getting a little bit too intense lately, almost to a point that feels unnecessarily aggressive!Honestly, both of them are just too much for me to handle... but hey, I'm definitely not going to start playing favorites or sucking up to anyone!😠

hollowtrucker77 said:So, from what I’ve gathered so far, the idea is that they’re opening up a subforum where basically anyone can start a thread about whatever random thing pops into their head, and then we just let the forum members descend into total chaos debating it?

That’s pretty much exactly how I figured things out, though I have to admit I completely missed the mark on that very last part! Whatever works for you!Well, who knows? If that wasn't exactly what briskpuma23 was aiming for all along, I might just have to start my own thread to explain how I actually figured this whole thing out!

And hey, if I totally misread what you were saying, @briskpuma23... my bad! I really don't mean to hijack this thread and take over the whole conversation, but honestly, if I could just have a dedicated Women's Corner like this all the time, I would be so incredibly happy! I know I’ve probably mentioned it a dozen times before, but since I'm clearly obsessed, I guess I’ll just say it one more time!🙄

When most people hear the word "transgender," they probably immediately picture some guy in heavy makeup wearing a dress or something along those lines.🤷

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what briskpuma23 was getting at specifically, but generally speaking, the whole concept of being transgender is... well, it's such a massive, sprawling umbrella term that our local Wikipedia entry here has basically just given up and tried to cover everything.
And like Lisa Hernandez3 mentioned, there are so many different subtopics that could easily fall under that heading.

Sash, I feel like this is essentially the same deal as MK and ŽK—anyone can start a thread about pretty much anything, and then the community jumps in to discuss it. Though, granted, it isn’t always the most organized chaos—we can't really get into chauvinistic arguments here, as that would be totally against our rules. Still, there are certain topics that just seem to fit perfectly with the whole idea of being "above it all," which I mentioned earlier. My biggest worry is that this might turn into some kind of trashy spectacle—you know, like those endless red carpet coverage shows. But, if it manages to capture the mainstream interest in the States and if the queer scene decides to embrace it, it could actually take off.

Hold on, what do you mean "anything"?
If the file is titled the Transgender corner, I assume there’s at least some loose connection to the subject matter. It’s not like someone is going to pop into that specific section to start a heated debate about... I don't know, lawn care.
Because if that's actually the case, then the whole point of having this PDF is moot. General discussion threads already have plenty of room to breathe on the existing files.

Yeah, exactly!🎉

My biggest fear is that this whole thing just turns into some tacky, low-brow spectacle—you know, like those over-the-top Hollywood red carpet shows that feel totally forced. But honestly, if they play their cards right, it could become a massive hit across the country, and I really think the local queer community would embrace it with open arms!

Oh, come on now, don't be so pessimistic! I truly believe we’re going to turn out just fine. We’ll be wonderful, polite, and genuinely tolerant people—just kind, cultured, and incredibly well-mannered!
🙂
Please, just give us our Corner and make sure it stays that way!

Not every single thread in the Men's or Women's corners is strictly limited to one gender or tied directly to those themes either. But honestly, it can get pretty awkward sometimes when you're trying to comment on the other side.
Because if that's the case, then there isn't really any need for this PDF at all, seeing as general interest threads definitely already have their place in our existing PDFs.

Wilbald explained that perfectly.

So please, try to be a little more serious and stop being so dismissive about everything!😠 If you want us to handle all the moderation while you just sit back and enjoy the ride, you've got another thing coming.😁

MK and ŽK are basically just playgrounds for jokes anyway.
Stajaznam, I don't think the transgender corner would ever really fit into the same category as a subreddit like MK or ŽK.
But that's just me.🤷

edit: Me, a moderator for that imaginary corner? Please. 🤣

@ Matthew Grant9 - I suppose transgender identity has its own specific place, particularly regarding gender, and perhaps it shouldn't be conflated with supranationality—even if the logic feels somewhat similar. Personally, I might suggest viewing it more as a conceptual or theoretical framework rather than just an intimate, personal identification. You could look at this thread for comparison: http://www.reddit.com/r/example_thread

Well, yes, that’s what I was getting at above—the concept. Not exactly "anything," per se; it's more like how things work at queer festivals—lots of psychology and sociology topics, or even art, which could fit within the scope. Various types of transfers. For instance, why does America have a porn star version of Severina, but no Colbert? 😬 (Leaving aside our local version of Colbert, obviously.) But I won't go any further; it's only fair to let briskpuma23 weigh in—I’m just thinking that since this topic is already here, we might as well stir the pot a little. 😬

I agree that this shouldn't become a space reserved solely for intimate identities and topics of that nature (though they would be quite welcome, given that most people don't truly grasp the nuances of being transgender). I also absolutely agree that this corner should mirror the vibe of the queer festivals and workshops held globally for years. However, my fear is that over time, everything and anything will start getting shoved in here, and the sub-forum will lose its sense of purpose.
Maybe I'm wrong, I couldn't say for sure, but that's just the impression I get.

The whole subject of being transgender is so incredibly layered that you could probably argue about it until the internet itself goes offline. 😲😁

As for specific regulations... look, I suspect order could be established fairly quickly. People tend to make a huge scene and throw a tantrum at first, but once they realize their protest isn't gaining any traction, most just move on.
I'm just not sure there would be much interest in that particular PDF. It seems pretty thin to me. I haven't seen anything remotely similar over on Psychology (or any other sub-forum).
Maybe it exists somewhere, but I certainly haven't come across it.🤷

In my experience, the people constantly demanding special rules are usually the ones talking nonsense most of the time—the OP himself completely misjudged someone's political leaning after reading just two posts on a skydiving thread, for instance—so I think the rest of Reddit handles these topics just fine, provided people actually have the imagination and the desire to engage in civilized discussion. 😉

Are you implying this poster is talking about me, or are you claiming I was focusing on you?

As for anything else—you can never predict which way a subforum will go. Reddit isn't the same thing it was five years ago.

Here's the reality, which just occurred to me: a transgender corner will inevitably be created sooner or later. If that's the case, it's better to get it over with now.

I don't personally know anyone from that community, but it's perfectly clear to me that they are one of the most marginalized groups in America. Reddit has a moral obligation to provide those people with their own space, and that's where my argument ends. Besides, as Matthew Grant9 pointed out, a transgender corner has the potential to expand, raising societal questions that often go unasked and providing perspectives that offer a different look at our culture—making it much more than just a refuge for a marginalized group.

Whether the TK will be more serious than the ŽK (everything is more serious than MK) isn't something we can know ahead of time. If someone turns it into a freak show, then it really shouldn't be started. But ultimately, that depends on the moderators and the users.

Castro could moderate it. Along with someone a bit gentler. When I say gentler, I don't mean cowardly moderation, but rather someone who acts more like a moderator/educator, using a polite approach to explain to users why certain things shouldn't be posted. But those are technicalities I don't want to deal with.

P.S. It's honestly incredible to me that both Herp and Lisa Hernandez3 took my metaphorical provocations on their subforums so seriously. Give yourselves a break—humor, even when it falls flat, is still just humor.

No, briskpuma23, I didn't take that comment about the psychology subforum seriously—honestly, you should probably just relax a little bit.
When I mentioned moderation, I was actually thinking of you; I suspect that with your creativity, clarity, and general well-roundedness, you’d do a great job. Maybe you and Castro could even team up.

Oh, I’m certainly not disputing that! I totally get what transgender means by definition, but as I’ve tried to explain several times in this thread, I was really just trying to paint a picture of what I envision for a potential new corner of the site.
So, I'm not actually advocating for a literal "transgender corner" in the way the term is usually used; I'm aiming for something else entirely. And, honestly, I have to admit there's a pretty good chance I completely missed the mark on what briskpuma23 was getting at, but if that turns out to be true, I’ll just go ahead and start a whole new thread where I can properly argue for the specific corner I have in mind.
Before briskpuma23 chimed in just now, I hadn't even considered whether I needed a fresh thread. But now that I see it might be necessary, I'll head off to whip up something that actually makes sense and has a bit of structure to it. 😁

I'm quite certain that back in the early days of Reddit, there weren't nearly this many subreddits, and it's highly likely they'll keep growing in the future... so now it's really just a question of whether the idea I've been sharing deserves its own little spot under the American internet sun.

First, let's get this corner open. Honestly, I can't think of anything else I'd want to moderate. And please, skip the explicit compliments—to me, that’s worse than being cursed at.
While everyone seems to be rushing to appoint moderators, wouldn't it make more sense to have someone actually invested in the community, like Matthew Grant9?

That's my two cents. I'll check back in once someone manages to truly get under my skin.

Nooo, go ahead and edit that if you're still hanging around, just so nobody takes you too seriously!

I am saying this with absolute certainty: there is no way Matthew Grant9 could handle any moderation duties, at least certainly nothing of any real quality.

I thought I made it clear that I don't belong in that circle, even if we take a broader view—basically, if you open up a corner like that, things like this will inevitably pop up. Or they won't. But I'm betting they will.

And yeah—it's hilarious how Matthew Grant9 interprets this potential PDF as some kind of transcendent sanctuary for everyone who doesn't fit in. Expanding the battlefield rocks. Someone get Matthew Grant9 a moderator badge.

It feels like we’re all just running ahead of the shovel here—mostly because, well, if we want to actually build something, we need to understand what’s being proposed in the first place. And in this scenario, you’re the one making the pitch. That’s why I asked—and maybe I was teasing you a little bit, sorry about that—but I wanted to know who might step up as moderator. It would honestly be quite logical, and maybe even pretty interesting, if you took the lead. So, even if acting as moderator isn't really your thing, it would be, I guess, really helpful 😉 if you could help clear up the specifics now that you've put the proposal forward. If things start getting a bit heated, maybe try channeling that energy into answering Sashev question above instead? While you're at it, take a look at what we've already discussed in this thread—aside from Matthew Grant9 (who could theoretically moderate, but let's not get ahead of ourselves since we aren't seriously debating that part yet), a few of us have already shared thoughts on what the content of this sub-forum should actually look like. Just be a pal and let us know what you think.
Edit: No, that answer to Sashev isn't quite cutting it!

Who are you asking? I suppose she could theoretically step into a moderator role just by being motivated—though, honestly, we aren't really discussing that right now. Let's just take a moment to enjoy the sunshine instead. If anyone feels like sharing a compliment, feel free... as long as it isn't just someone being shut out.
