Ugh, mothers-in-law! Thank God we finally moved out from under their roof, otherwise I would have absolutely lost my mind by now! When I had my first child, we were still living together and it was pure madness. I wouldn't say she’s a malicious woman, per se, but honestly, she's retired and clearly looking for something to do—she treated our lives like an adventure she needed to direct. She was constantly hovering over us like we were two idiots who didn't have the slightest clue how to care for a baby, even though she had her own kids nearly forty years ago! It was completely normal for her to just wander into our bedroom while I was breastfeeding, or to lecture us about every little thing. I honestly don't know how I stayed sane... there were moments where I was literally swallowing my tears just to keep from screaming...
We live on our own now, and since I'm due in just two months, I went over to their place the other day to dig through some old bins of my eldest's stuff and grab anything useful. Well, I walked out feeling totally depressed because she just can't help herself—she has to meddle in everything. The entire time I was sorting through those bags, she sat right there with me, dropping constant "expert" commentary—like, "Oh, this is lovely, you absolutely must take this!" when in reality, it's just some yellowed, stretched-out rag we inherited from someone ages ago.
Then it was, "What are you going to do about the crib? Where is it going to fit? Did you measure? Move this piece of furniture over here—it'll be better for you, and you can put the crib there." As if I'm some moron who hasn't measured everything the second I saw the floor plan plus the doctor's tests! Then she called me later because she remembered that none of the onesies we looked at were in the bags, asking where they were. I told her I lent them to a friend who just had a baby, but I don't even need them anyway because bodysuits are much more practical. My baby is coming in late autumn, so he won't exactly need his back exposed to the cold, but no—she knows better. She insists I'll need them once the baby is tiny... ugh, I am losing it! 🙂
Sorry for the massive vent!
One more thing—if she knew I was thinking about buying a new stroller, she would never leave me alone, because in her mind, everything old is better. Look, I'm not a snob; I love using secondhand stuff whenever it's in good condition (honestly, I'm thrilled to save money that way), but I am definitely not dressing my child in stretched-out, stained rags or pushing him around in a beat-up stroller that doesn't even have a bassinet attachment (our first kid was a summer baby, so we never bought one). 🙄
I feel a bit better now that I've let all that out. Please, tell me—am I overreacting, or would this drive you crazy too?
