I'm actually planning on installing Windows 7 soon, but I've been feeling a bit lazy about formatting my partitions—specifically my C: drive where my current XP lives. Would it be a headache if I just did an upgrade instead? Right now I'm running Windows XP SP3 (though it isn't an official licensed version), so I was wondering if
my current programs will still work properly, and if I'll run into any major driver issues since everything seems to download automatically these days?

Thanks!

Oh man, don't be silly now... you just head into your BIOS, set it up to boot from the CD/DVD first, and then right at the start of the Windows 7 installation, a window pops up giving you the option to format your C: drive (or whichever drive you want) and honestly, it takes less than a minute... at least on newer machines.....

Hey there!
I’m planning on installing Windows 7. Right now I'm running Windows XP SP3. Is there going to be any trouble if I just perform an upgrade? Will everything actually work normally?

Thanks

I know that. But that isn't what I asked. I don't want to format if I don't have to.

cosmicangler57,
Does your Picek actually have enough juice to make the jump from Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7? How old are we talking here? What's the CPU looking like? And the RAM?

Check out this Microsoft link if you want to get a better handle on their upgrade advisor: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...e-advisor.aspx (just checking for software compatibility, hardware resources, drivers, and all that good stuff.)

I’d suggest going with the 64-bit version of Windows 7 RTM. Even though the 32-bit version caps out at 4 GB of RAM, I don't think you're actually going to need more than that.

You can't just jump straight from XP to 7—it’s a non-starter. You really need to go with a clean install for Windows 7. Honestly, don't even bother sweating the partitioning process; just wipe the main hard drive and install it there. If your rig has enough muscle, you won't regret it.

By the way, before you dive headfirst into the week, make sure you back up your most important files from XP. Highly recommended. 👍

Why don't you just tell us where you live and if you own a business or something...

🙂 Don't be vulgar 😳

I grabbed Windows 7 Ultimate RTM from a torrent, burned the ISO to a DVD, and installed it without a single hiccup. As for activation, I just 😁 ... come on, just Google it. You'll definitely find something 😉

BTW, I live in beautiful our America and I don't have a company.

Man, what is wrong with everyone? Is everyone seriously this clueless?
Hey Google, what kind of minimum specs am I actually looking at for Windows 7?

Come on, my favorite PC—tell me, can you even handle running Windows 7?

Grabbed Windows 7 Ultimate from a torrent... yeah, but I grabbed the 64-bit version.

It’s acting up on me a little, lagging slightly.

I've got an i7 920, so it's a solid rig. Could this 32-bit thing be screwing me over?

Anyway, Windows 7 is decent. Way better than Vista.

What's this supposed to be? 👍

wiredotter14 said:It's giving me a bit of trouble; it keeps stuttering on me.

Give me an explanation, please. 😕 Could it be a memory issue? Are you actually running low on RAM?

wiredotter14 said:I've got an i7 920, so it's a decent rig. Am I going to be held back by this 32-bit nonsense? Messing around.????

The question is: are you messing with us? 😂 64-bit is (always) better than 32-bit.
So you've got the "weakest" CPU out of Intel's top three heavy hitters (minus the i7 Extreme edition). Honestly? I’m over here running a Mac with an Intel Core 2 duo—running Leopard along with Ubuntu & Windows 7 in a virtual machine—and the machine still runs perfectly smooth. 👍

wiredotter14 said:Honestly, Windows 7 is solid. It’s miles ahead of Vista.

To be honest, my take on Vista was mostly based on what I read in the media, which didn't exactly paint a glowing picture. I didn't hear much from actual users unless they were complaining. But I have to admit, this past week has actually been a pretty pleasant surprise.

I've got 3GB of Corsair at 1333 MHz, which should be plenty enough.

Gaming is fine—never stutters, FPS stays solid.

But Internet Explorer 8 (the one bundled with Windows 7) keeps freezing up, and Windows Explorer does the same thing.

Even when I'm loading an installer, it hangs for a bit and sits there on "not responding" for a while.
It’s not a total disaster, but I expected these basic tasks to be faster.
Everything ran way smoother on XP.

Maybe some programs just struggle with 64-bit?

That memory is more than fast enough.👍 You can never have too much RAM; if you have an open slot, just use it.

I don't even use IE8; I've been sticking to Firefox for years. Honestly, I haven't had a single app "stutter" on me yet. Every time I launch something, it feels like Windows finally actually works the way it was supposed to from the start.

It might just be a compatibility issue.🤔 Have you checked if that specific program even supports Windows 7?

My machine isn't exactly in its prime. It's a Pentium 4 3.0 Nvidia Gf 7600 GS DDR2 2 GB... I'm obviously planning to install the 32-bit version, and as for age, it's going on its third year now.

Noah Sanchez39, I wanted to ask you something... What exactly is so magical about 64-bit Windows to you? 🙂 Here are a few thoughts of mine:

1. There are way fewer drivers available for the x64 version compared to x86.
2. 64-bit software is practically non-existent, so the OS can't really be utilized.
3. An x64 OS doesn't support 16-bit programs.
4. Drivers for an x64 OS have to be signed.
5. If you install a 64-bit OS, then 32-bit programs—which is basically everything a regular user touches—run in an emulator!

I don't know where you heard that it's "faster," but there's no sense in putting it on a machine with
Don't get me wrong, but I honestly don't see why a home user would bother switching to x64 right now. 🙂

I already posted the specs above.

When I'm just idling, the RAM (3GB) sits at about 35% usage.

I got this version of Internet Explorer 8 pre-installed with Windows 7 64-bit, which is why I was surprised by how much it was lagging.
Windows Explorer is doing the exact same thing.

I usually just use Firefox anyway.

By the way, are there actually any games out there that take advantage of—or even utilize—the benefits of a 64-bit OS?

Everything runs fine for me so far (like COD4, COD5, etc.).

First off, thanks Noah Sanchez39 for the info on getting Windows 7 sorted out.

I grabbed the 7290 RTM build yesterday, got it activated, installed all the updates, and honestly, it’s running perfectly so far. :-)

But, I guess I have one more question regarding the subject line here:

There’s this little bit of text sitting in the bottom right corner of my desktop that says:
Windows 7
7290 Evaluation copy.

Any idea how I might be able to get rid of that?

You just search Google for a way to strip the Windows 7 watermark, find a tool, download it, run it, restart your PC, and you're done. That's it.
