The OS handles everything natively.

Can you walk me through how to burn a DVD or CD?
Like, I want to burn an entire blank DVD.
Or is that not a thing?

I get the whole ISO and data DVD burning deal, but I haven't figured this part out yet.

I had already unpacked the Windows 7 files onto a DVD first (didn't realize that wasn't how it worked), then used the program to turn that folder into an ISO and burned it. Now it won't boot. The computer sees the disc fine, but nothing happens when I try to boot from it. What am I missing?😕

There's no point in unpacking the ISO first. You should just use the "burn image" option directly—it varies by software, but that's the idea. Just get the original ISO again and burn it straight. What you have there isn't bootable.

I mean, just burning an entire DVD onto a blank disc.
Or is that even possible?

I get the whole thing about burning ISO files or data DVDs, but I haven't found anything on this specifically.

hmm. If you don't have two burners sitting there, you basically have to load everything onto the computer first—so it acts like a virtual drive—or just use some kind of 3rd party software.
I'm not totally sure about CD-to-CD though, since I don't have two drives to work with.
IMO, I actually really like burning stuff on Windows 10 because it asks if you want a multi-session disk and lets you set the speed before you start every single time.

Look, buddy, first you’ve got to make sure the system is set to boot from the optical drive—you know, the CD or DVD player—and once you hit the POST screen, just tap F11... that should bring up a little menu where you can select the disc drive as your primary boot device again. Give it a shot, honestly, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it... if it works, it should bypass that annoying "press any key" prompt during the installation process, especially since you don't even have a keyboard plugged in to begin with (which is just classic luck on your part)...

Hey everyone, quick question for the tech experts here... what’s your take on a setup running an Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 at 2.8 GHz, paired with 2 gigs of DDR2 800 MHz RAM? I'm weighing my options for a potential jump over to Windows 7 and was wondering if I should bother with the 32-bit version or if the 64-bit route is actually worth the trouble... thanks in advance. Cheers

Go ahead and install it. Your PC can handle the 32-bit version just fine. I guess it wouldn't hurt to grab another 2 gigs of RAM if you plan on gaming.

Look, let’s review the basics here:
1) Find a Windows 7 RTM torrent file.
2) Download that torrent file to your desktop, for instance.
3) Open the torrent with a client—say, http://www.utorrent.com/—and start the download for the week (it's several GBs).
4) Once the week's download is finished, you'll have the ISO file sitting on your desktop.
5) Burn that to a DVD as a "bootable disk" or "ISO image." Instead of Nero, try using CDBurnerXP, http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ 👍

darkviper7 said:You don't even need burning software on Windows 7.
You can do everything directly through Windows itself.

Filip is currently running XP and just needs to burn the week's OS properly.

cosmicangler57 said:It works, but I want to format the C drive where my current XP is installed, and I can't do that this way... anyone actually have an answer to my previous question?

Back up your vital data first, then wipe the C drive so you can install the week's OS later. Isn't that how it works? 😉

Exactly, Thomas Hernandez21 🙂
Check out what's listed above under 5) 🙄

Can anyone lend me a hand here? I still can't seem to track down Outlook on Windows 7.
Actually—I did find it—but it just won't launch! Any suggestions?

I eventually located the app, but it just refuses to launch... Any suggestions?

Just use Windows Live Mail instead. It's honestly the best way to go...👍

Where did you find it?

On this page it explains exactly what happened to Outlook.

I'm having some trouble getting Windows 7 installed. My computer is... HP 4510s So here’s the deal with the version of the beta: Windows 7 Beta (7000-0-081212-1400) Ultimate 32-bit (at least, that's what the torrent says).
I burned a DVD and booted from it, and everything was cruising along perfectly until I hit the "Completing installation" stage. Right then, the screen glitches out—kind of like when you change your resolution—and then the whole thing just freezes up on me.
I'm setting it up on its own partition, running a dual boot alongside XP.
Anyone know how to fix this?

That’s an outdated build of Windows 7, a beta version dated December 12, 2008. These days, the RTM version is what's actually circulating—the one sent to PC manufacturers for testing and pre-installing on their hardware.

If you successfully burned the ISO to a DVD and the installer recognized your hardware and ran smoothly right up until the end, the issue is almost certainly the specific version of Windows you're using. I've read online that they fixed a massive amount of bugs and stability issues in the versions released after the beta stage.

My advice? Try running the installation from that same DVD one more time. If it fails again, stop messing with the beta and download the RTM version, which is basically the final product ready for retail. You can find it on this site, this one, or this page. You'll have to deal with activation later, but let's get you installed first. 😉

Hey!
Here I am again... I start the Windows installation process, and right in the middle of copying the system files—the very first step—it hits 70% and then this message pops up:

You seem hell-bent on trying to install Windows 7 directly from within Windows XP, essentially attempting an in-place upgrade from XP to Windows 7...

That simply isn't possible.

Cosmicangler57, what kind of upgrade are we talking about here? Are you moving from XP to Windows 7? 🙂
Read what I already told you: (check those last two lines specifically) 😉

Regarding that "error code 0x80070017" on your screen, you probably didn't burn the ISO image to the DVD at the slowest possible speed. Check these pages for more info:

That is simply not going to happen.

I didn't install it on a fresh drive before trying the upgrade... that works, but this error is screwing me over right now. I'll try burning the ISO again, and if that fails, I'll just download it all over again (I have a 10GB data plan, so I'll only do that if I have absolutely no other choice).
Thanks for the advice.

Regards!

Does anyone know how to load DVD content directly from a hard drive into Windows Media Player? I can't wrap my head around why everything worked perfectly back when I was running Windows XP, yet here I am facing a wall...
