honestly, I still think Microsoft's Windows XP is the best... just super simple and runs so smooth

So, I finally made the jump over to Windows 7 x64. The download was a total drag, though—took way longer than I actually wanted it to.
I finally got it rolling around 7:30 PM. After that, I was stuck sitting there for nearly an hour and a half just waiting for the system upgrade to finish up. Spent the rest of my time scanning the registry, just being extra cautious since this isn't exactly a clean, fresh installation. I ended up tossing a few programs that weren't playing nice with the new setup, and right now I'm grabbing Windows XP mode for Virtual PC to see how that handles itself.
The system seems to be holding up pretty well so far. We'll see how it behaves down the road, but if things start acting glitchy, I'll just bite the bullet and go for a clean install. Fingers crossed I don't have to.

In terms of simplicity, Windows 7 really took the baton from XP, which is true. Everything is positioned exactly where you'd expect it to be, and more importantly, it doesn't hog your RAM or CPU at all. It also takes up very little hard drive space compared to Vista, which isn't much more than an extra 1GB over what XP requires.

It looks like you won't even need an SP for this one, which is honestly great news... 😁

Just wanted to drop a quick brag about how things have been going lately. After the upgrade, Windows 7 is running smoother than silk. The only thing I had to do was wipe my old ATI drivers before I even started the process. To my surprise—and honestly, I didn't see this coming—even though I’m running an x64 system, the driver for my HP LaserJet 1010 just worked perfectly right out of the box. It’s printing like a charm, which is wild because I’ve heard plenty of people complaining that they had to hunt down and reinstall those specific drivers just to get anything to come out of the machine. On the first try, my logoff function was totally busted; the whole system would just freeze up on me, forcing a hard reset. And don't even get me started on sleep mode—my USB mouse was basically a paperweight after the computer woke up. But now? Both functions are working exactly as they should. The absolute best part, though, is that I managed to keep all my accounts and settings intact, which definitely wouldn't have happened if I'd gone with a fresh, clean installation.

The printer works perfectly, even though I heard plenty of people complaining they had to reinstall drivers just to get printing working again. Initially, my logoff wasn't working (the system would just freeze up and force a hard reset), and during sleep mode, my USB mouse was totally dead after "waking" it up. Now, both functions work fine. Best part is I kept all my accounts and settings intact, which wouldn't have happened with a clean install.

Glad to hear the upgrade actually worked out for you. Enjoy. 🙂

I went ahead and installed the 64-bit version. Looking at the comments now, it seems like you guys are seeing barely any memory usage, but on my machine, it’s constantly sitting at around 1 GB.

My week runs in a VM on my Mac, alongside macOS and Ubuntu Linux. I've allocated 1GB of RAM and 10GB of disk space to it. Performance? Solid. 👍(Best windows yet 😍)

I don't really run into any issues since I have 3 GB of RAM available, so it never lags, but using up 1 GB of memory feels like a bit much.

Hey everyone!

Man, how do I get my hands on XP again? It’s not even that I hate Windows 7—it’s actually great—but it just totally chokes whenever I try to work on my music... honestly, maybe my rig is just too slow for it. Anyway, now that I’ve got this XP disc ready to go, I'm completely lost because I can't figure out which version I even have. Every time I try to install it, it tells me the current operating system won't allow it. So, when I restart and try to boot from the CD, absolutely nothing happens. When I try to click through the CD files, it just says it's unsupported. Can anyone please help me out here??😕

Does anyone know how I can roll back to Windows XP? It’s not that I don't like Windows 7—it’s actually great—but my system just starts lagging whenever I try to produce music, so maybe my PC is just underpowered for it. Anyway, when I try using an XP installation disc, I'm having trouble because I'm not quite sure which version I have, and it won't let me install it, saying the current operating system doesn't support this action. So, when I restart and try to boot from the CD, nothing happens at all. When I try to click on the disc while the computer is running, it tells me it isn't supported. Can anyone help me out?😕

Just pop the CD in while Windows is still running and start the setup from there; you should be able to install Windows XP without any issues.

Personally, I’m seeing my Windows 7 x64 pull about 1GB of RAM just sitting there idling. Back when I was running Vista x64, it was eating up closer to 1.5 GB, so it looks like they actually did some decent optimization this time around. Not that it really matters for me since I’ve got 4GB of RAM under the hood, so I don't feel the squeeze. But hey, why'd you make the jump to a 64-bit system? Honestly, you might be better off sticking with x86. I only bit the bullet on the 64-bit version because I was hitting that 3.2 GB ceiling, and I needed the headroom. Guessing the 32-bit version probably uses a bit less memory...

In short; comparing Windows XP to Windows 7 is pointless. This is all new. If any of you actually remember what XP was like when it first launched, you’d be trashing Windows 7 right now. I’ve been in this game a long time and have cycled through just about every version of Windows out there. For me, XP was nothing but a headache until that first service pack finally dropped. As for this new Windows 7? It’s easily the most stable "modern" Windows I've ever used. I’ve had it running for about three weeks now and everything is working perfectly. When I think back to my first XP installation, it makes me sick—I had to roll back to Millennium ten different times because of all the XP glitches. And don't even get me started on Vista. In my opinion, it’s the worst thing Microsoft ever produced. Honestly, I think they tanked it on purpose just to make Windows 7 look better and more stable by comparison.

That's it. Stop hating on Windows 7 when you all struggled through those early XP days until SP3 fixed everything. Just wait until the first service pack for Windows 7 rolls out.

I could really use a little hand here 😁
So, I’ve got Windows 7 installed on my machine, but whenever I go to Shut down -> Shut down, the computer just slips right into sleep mode... It refuses to actually power off! It's honestly ridiculous—I'm basically stuck using the old-school method of just smashing the physical power button!
Does anyone have any advice or a fix for this? Thanks a bunch!

Have you tried adjusting things in "Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Power Options"? 🤔

I haven't touched a single thing in there—honestly, I've left everything exactly as it was—but looking at it now, everything seems to be running smoothly! My only real hiccup is that the monitor keeps cutting out on me... though, thankfully, the computer itself isn't trying to go into sleep mode or anything like that. Just a little bit of a weird quirk with the screen!

Since I'm just a college student, I grabbed Windows 7 from the MSDN-AA community... When I downloaded it, I got the password and the license serial too. I guess I'm wondering if this license can be used more than once? The thing is, I have to wipe my hard drive, so I don't know if I'll actually be able to reinstall Windows 7 later on.

A classic point of confusion when jumping between Vista and Windows 7...
You don't want to go to the Shut down button directly—instead, try clicking that little arrow in the bottom right corner of the menu... once you click that, the options should pop up, and you'll see where the Shut down option is located...

I'm really hoping that does the trick—because I've had to explain to pretty much everyone moving from Vista over to Windows 7 that the whole principle behind it works a bit differently now...

Well, I guess I learned everything the hard way... hehe
