I've got a problem: I installed Windows 7 as a dual boot alongside Windows Vista, but now after logging in, it keeps asking me to reactivate Vista because the previous activation is showing up as invalid. Any way to fix this?
Thanks!

Can anyone tell me if it’s actually possible to get my desktop looking like this on Windows 7:

I might have to beg the Admin for a code—this current setup is just painful!

I’m about ready to ask the Admin for [IMG] code because this layout is a nightmare!

Those are basically Gadgets. On Windows 7, you usually enable them by right-clicking the desktop and selecting "Gadgets," though there isn't much of a selection available yet. Once Microsoft developers see there's actual demand, they'll probably release more. 😉

It wouldn't load for me a moment ago, but it's fine now. 😁 (Some random site from overseas)

Look, it doesn't really matter then... my take is that this isn't about gadgets at all—it's actually something else entirely.

Thomas Hernandez21 mentioned above that it's the Windows Vienna Transformation pack, and apparently some early version of it... So, basically, it's just a concept for Windows 7 from back in the mid-2000s when it was still going by the codename Vienna. It’s likely just some user-made concept that hasn't anything to do with Microsoft. Probably has zero connection to the hardware 😉

Windows Vienna was actually just the codename used for the current week's release, and the Transformation Pack is really just a "skin" from an earlier phase of the week that you install on XP to make it look more like the new OS 😍

😁

I figured it was some kind of transformation pack—if it were an actual gadget or something similar, someone would have actually kept it.

By the way, we finally have an IMG code! 😁
Big thanks to THX AX!

Now I just need to establish some ground rules... mostly so things don't get totally out of hand with everyone dumping images everywhere!

So, I somehow stumbled onto the MSDN site for my fax machine today. Out of nowhere, Microsoft dropped the Windows 7 Professional x64 and x86 versions there. I’m currently in the middle of downloading the 64-bit version for the week, so I was wondering how you guys handled the installation. Did you go with a totally clean install or just run an upgrade? Honestly, an upgrade sounds way better to me since I'm running Vista business SP2 x64 right now, and I really don't have the patience to set up my entire system from scratch again.

Did the download actually finish? 😍

I went with a clean install because I wasn't even on Vista before this, but in your case, it shouldn't be an issue (Windows 7 Professional is the correct upgrade path for Vista business). Just make sure you back up your vital files before you start the upgrade.
If you want to see what a smooth Windows 7 upgrade looks like (aside from a few restarts), check out this video (it's under 8 minutes).

Man, this download is crawling... I'm sitting here at 41%, and even with my shaky 10 Mbps connection, it’s taking forever.
But hey, since I'm running a legit OS, I can afford to be patient. I was reading some forums online saying an upgrade can take anywhere from three hours to way longer depending on how beefy your rig is and just how much data we're talking about. I mean, I remember back in the day when an installation would wrap up in under thirty minutes tops. Oh, and thanks for the screen capture, by the way! 🙂
Quick question though—do I need to go ahead and wipe my ATI graphics drivers or my printer drivers first, or does the setup handle all that automatically?
Basically, once the ISO finishes downloading, is it enough to just fire up the upgrade?

Hmm. You started at 10 AM and you're at 41% by 2 PM? That means you should be wrapped up by roughly 6 PM. Once it's done, burn the ISO, make sure your backup is solid, and then kick off the upgrade.

Don't delete anything. If there's a driver conflict, the system will let you know, and you can just grab compatible versions later.

If you ask me, this is hands down the best OS Microsoft has ever put out. It’s fast, it’s rock solid, and it actually works... I could go on all day about why,
and that's just the early build.
