The bank is taking my entire paycheck... in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Look, all those tips about having a third of your paycheck garnished are fine in theory, but what does that actually achieve? => Your monthly obligations don't just vanish. You still won't be paying your full installment, which means you're just inviting the bank to hit you with notification fees, late notices, and don't even get me started on the predatory interest rates they tack on for delinquency...

My advice? Walk into the branch with your pay stub in hand. Sit down, stay calm, and be human about it. Explain exactly what happened—that your income has taken a hit and you're terrified of the moment you simply won't be able to keep up anymore... and believe me, that is the last thing a major bank like Chase or Bank of America wants to see (honestly, no bank cares if you default, especially in this economy)... Since you're already in this mess and you clearly want to avoid legal headaches, ask the branch manager for some empathy and help with extending your term... Most branches have loan calculators right there at the desk; plug in your remaining principal—basically how much you still owe—and the timeframe => it'll spit out a new monthly payment so you can get a rough idea of how much breathing room you'd get if you stretched the loan out by, say, five years... I'm not sure if they still offer those specific refinancing products where you wrap the balance into a new term, but even if you end up paying more interest over the long haul, having a significantly lower monthly payment right now is worth its weight in gold, even if the payments jump back up once the term ends....
And for heaven's sake, ask them about any refinancing fees or closing costs

That idea about finding someone to co-sign or lend you the funds is solid, but you need to move fast before things escalate

So, did you actually make it down to the bank?

Lawrence Wright7 said:Yeah... I actually thought along those lines too... but that's exactly why I'm here asking for advice on what to do next... I know full well I can't keep this up much longer... things are getting seriously heavy.
Here's the breakdown:
I took out a 30-year mortgage.
I've only been paying it for 2 years.
At this stage, isn't there basically zero wiggle room to lower the payment by stretching out the years? Or is there??

Some people are talking about forbearance or loan moratoriums... what does that even mean in practice?? Is it actually a good thing or just a trap... from what I gather, you’re still stuck paying interest, you just aren't chipping away at the principal while you're in that "grace period."
And in my specific situation
monthly payment $1264
interest $1100
principal $167!!!! just $167.
After two years of playing by the rules, I've only managed to knock the principal down by $3333—which is basically what it takes to cover two whole payments.

Look, I wouldn't recommend those forbearance options or anything like that... I mean, what are you actually achieving? Nothing. The principal is still sitting there staring you in the face, and while you're "waiting," you're still getting hit with interest rates that are absolutely brutal...

What you need to do is get down to the bank immediately. Don't talk to some random teller or a clerk behind a desk; demand to speak with a branch manager. Explain the whole mess to them. Maybe they can extend the term of the loan... even if lowering that monthly payment by a couple hundred bucks helps, in a situation like yours, I think that would make a massive difference. And whatever you do, ask about the refinancing costs first!!!

And regarding that advice a few of them gave you => increase your income!! It’s doable. It might not be the most glamorous work, but hey, let's hope this struggle doesn't last forever...

Look, you have to pay back your loans... honestly, it’s just naive to sit around hoping some "special" law is going to swoop in and save you. You can't run away from debt; it follows you everywhere. My advice? Get off the computer, drive down to your local Chase branch, ask to speak directly with the branch manager, and lay it all out on the table. Explain your situation clearly. They might be willing to extend your term to lower those monthly payments. If you keep hitting a wall like this, you're going to default, and trust me, banks—especially big ones like JP Morgan these days—don't want to deal with the headache of collections. It's in their best interest to work something out before everything goes south.

Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of that whole setup. The timelines are way too long, the guaranteed returns are practically peanuts, and you’re stuck without any liquidity... plus, if I recall correctly, you couldn't even use them as collateral for anything (at least not until about a year and a half or two ago).

blueridge32 said:Well, some actually do offer them, but hey, maybe I was overthinking things. Personally, I've got cash in a fund that guarantees I won't walk away with less than I put in.

but money market funds have been super, super steady over these last 🤔 8-9 years... some funds saw tiny little dips during their fiscal years, but honestly, nothing worth mentioning... you can't say never, but their investment structure is incredibly solid... they don't pull crazy returns, but the growth is constant.

What’s the actual setup for those mutual funds anyway? I'm pretty out of the loop on this. Are they super conservative or what? What kind of returns are we talking about—higher than 6%? And how long do I need to park my money there before I hit some kind of limit?

Man, so many questions! 🤣

But that usually comes with a specific maturity date, right? Like with Fidelity and those types of products.

Look, obviously, you don't get any guarantees when it comes to funds, period. But let's be real—money market funds have proven themselves to be incredibly, incredibly stable over these last 🤔 8 or 9 years. I mean, sure, some of them have seen tiny little dips here and there during their fiscal years, but honestly? It’s barely worth mentioning. I hate to say "never say never," but their investment structure is rock solid. They aren't going to give you some mind-blowing, spectacular returns that make you a millionaire overnight, but they offer steady, consistent growth.

It honestly strikes me as bizarre that something this critical isn't even listed on their (the DAB's) official website...
And frankly, I'm left scratching my head here: This Decision has been in effect since May 1, 2005. ... which completely contradicts the end of the notice regarding the effective date for the amendments increasing the insurance coverage amounts... 🤷

Wait, aren't we actually talking about Hypo Bank over in Austria? I mean, regardless, even if they share a name, we're looking at a completely different country here... Banks operating in the US fall under our own domestic laws and the heavy-handed oversight of Rohatinski.

The FDIC (hereafter referred to as the Agency) provides coverage
for citizen deposits based on the deposit insurance act.
The Agency insures citizen deposits at every bank, savings bank, and thrift institution up to the amount of
$133333 in a 100% capacity, regardless of the number of bank accounts held, the balance of those accounts, the currency used, or
where those bank accounts are located.
The United States guarantees the Agency's obligations.
The Agency pays out compensation for insured deposits to citizen depositors in the event that the Federal Reserve
notifies a credit institution
of an order regarding the unavailability of deposits or when a competent court issues an order to initiate bankruptcy
proceedings.
The following deposits are included in the deposit insurance system:
1. funds held by citizens in USD or foreign currency deposited under a
deposit agreement,
2. funds in USD or foreign currency held in a savings book,
3. funds in checking accounts,
4. funds in citizens' money market accounts.

The following deposits are NOT included in the deposit insurance system: they are not covered by the following types of deposits:
1. deposits held by members of the board of directors or the supervisory board of a credit institution or special
management of the credit institution where they perform these functions, along with their related
parties,
2. deposits held by shareholders who hold more than 5% of voting shares in
the base capital of a credit institution and their related parties,
3. deposits that are not held in a person's name,
4. deposits placed under significantly more favorable terms than standard rates or those
placed under financial conditions that contributed to the deterioration of the credit
institution's status (see the note provided below regarding this point),
5. deposits for which a competent authority has determined, via a valid ruling, that they originate
from or are linked to transactions and actions constituting money laundering
under the laws regulating money laundering,
6. deposits held in credit unions.
The Agency is required to prepare compensation for citizen creditors no later than 90 days from the date the
unavailability of deposits or the opening of bankruptcy proceedings is established. In exceptional cases, the Federal Reserve may extend this
period.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note regarding point 4:
Article 2 of the Decision regarding criteria for determining deposits placed under significantly more favorable terms
(Federal Register No. 55 dated April 29, 2005) stipulates that thecriterion for identifying such deposits is that they
were placed in a bank with an interest rate at least 30% higher than the highest publicly announced
interest rate for that specific type of deposit and maturity period found in the bank's own interest rate decision for
consumer business, which was in effect on the day the deposit agreement was signed.

This Decision has been applicable since May 1, 2005.

I actually had no idea about this... thanks! 👍

But what on earth does that have to do with the deposit insurance provided by the DAB?
Best ways to save money right now? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Brian Murphy32 said:The funds are covered by the Democratic Advisory Board up to $133, provided the agreed interest rate doesn't exceed the publicly announced rate by more than 30%. Since you mentioned "some money," I assume we're talking about an amount small enough that it wouldn't trigger those higher negotiated rates anyway, so there's really nothing to worry about. You'll get your cash eventually. Maybe consider a 3-month CD instead; at a 5.2% yield, it’s actually a pretty decent deal, and if things get hairy, you can always pull the funds. Just keep in mind that for this promotional fixed-rate savings account, the early withdrawal penalty is 0.5%, with a minimum charge of $100

So what does that actually mean for us? 🤷

Of course, there's always that lingering fear of a relapse, but right now? We are beyond relieved.
The leukemia is gone, the transplant was a success, and Lanina's bone marrow is functioning perfectly. Honestly, it's just phenomenal news.

The part that isn't wonderful is her lungs. Between the leukemia itself and the brutal toxins from the mega-chemotherapy, her lungs took a massive hit and she's still fighting through the damage. She's still on a ventilator; things are looking a tiny bit better today, but every single day is a brand new battle and the situation shifts by the hour. We are just praying she has enough strength left to pull through these respiratory issues too.

Sending love to everyone.

Nobody over at the Federal Reserve gets banned just because they’re venting about some bank’s shady decisions or their ridiculous procedures... but if you start spamming, trolling, or just flat-out refusing to follow the rules, then yeah, you're getting nuked from orbit.

No one else on the Federal Reserve boards has a partial ban except for you, and as for your little clones? They’re looking at permanent bans from this forum, mark my words. I already told you once and I'm telling you again: I am not lifting this ban, and that’s final.
