Jose Miller17 said:this kind of reminds me of Homer watching Scott Pilgrim on TV right after someone gets saved: 'listen to that music, he's evil'... 😁

😁 😁

Jose Miller17 said:though I guess you might be wrong about how Caine was trying to grab attention with that comment... if he actually wanted attention, he'd probably say: 'I think modern movies are a hundred times better than that old American crap I used to act in'... then he'd get some real attention (and maybe a visit from a psychiatrist too) 😁😁

well, he's just grumbling because he's such a grouch... I mean, who doesn't grumble? 😁 some old guy protesting that nobody helps anyone else on the subway would complain about movies just as much if anyone were actually listening to him. 😁

I mean, you're kind of barking up the wrong tree there, man. 😉

the reality is that movies just simplify things... I mean, the target audience nowadays is mostly teenagers, so you get that consistent kind of content... if you walk into any local multiplex, you see it immediately...

That’s true. Or, as Bradbury might put it, they're just oversimplifying. Though, I guess it feels more like they're just mirroring how we live. A lot of stuff in our daily lives is pretty straightforward. Movies and their messages follow that same pattern, I suppose. If you really compare life to film, we tend to lead simple lives even when we're stuck in complex situations. Simple lives = simple narratives; complex problems = complex special effects. But hey, I'm just rambling here. 😁😁

Honestly, it's all the fault of that one four-eyed jerk who convinced some big shot back in '75 at Universal Pictures to cough up the cash for a movie about a shark. Everything changed after that. Nothing was ever the same. 😁

I mean, I guess they just haven't actually sat down and watched The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which is basically where the whole idea was stolen and recycled from. Or even that House of Wax remake with Paris Hilton... honestly, it’s just frustrating when I hear people praising movies like that.

I guess every generation just ends up making its own classics, doesn't it? Like, when *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* first hit theaters, there were definitely people turning their heads in total confusion, wondering how anyone could possibly enjoy a flick like that when they grew up on something like *Psycho*. Then, you had the next group who couldn't wrap their heads around why anyone would care for *Psycho* when they’d spent their lives watching stuff like *Invasion of the Body Snatchers*. It just keeps going... the older crowd had *Catman*, and before them, it was all about Lugosi and *Dracula*. It's just a cycle, I suppose. Always moving forward like that. 😉

Caine has reached that stage of life where nostalgia doesn't even hit people the way it used to. 😉 😁

Anyway, I’m with Anthony Davis6 on this one.

The film industry hasn't exactly been getting better, has it? Honestly, this whole decline everyone keeps talking about has probably been happening since the very beginning. I'd bet anything that even back when people were watching the Lumiere brothers' 😁 😁
there were folks turning their heads and complaining about how the cinematography looked in *****.

northerncrane4 said:Man, imagine if that actually happened—"Moulin Rouge" directed by Oliver Stone. 😁

😁 😁

I can already see how the script would change... I guess instead of playing some struggling writer, Ewan McGregor would probably be playing John Wilkes Booth. 😁

northerncrane4 said:Yeah. I don't even really like calling it a movie. It feels more like just a bunch of shots slapped together one after another.

I guess the pacing and the editing kind of remind me of "Natural Born Killers"

Brenda Lee50 said:Roger Ebert is just a master at what he does. Even if some people didn't see eye to eye with him, I've always thought he was an incredible critic because of his style. He kind of shifts his tone to match the vibe of whatever movie he's reviewing. That literary touch in his writing really adds something special to the whole experience. I guess that's why he earned a Pulitzer.

Roger Ebert is a legend. No matter how much I've moved away from his influence as I've gotten older, or how often I disagree with his takes on certain movies, I have to admit his reviews shaped how I watch films more than anything else. They were witty, unique, and sort of drifted away from that typical journalistic "objectivity" you usually see. Along with Leonard Maltin, he’s probably one of the best out there.

I had no idea he was in the hospital. I really hope he pulls through. 👍

I think I completely forgot that I even watched that.

I mean, I actually kind of liked it back when I was living in Bubimir.

But honestly, it’s probably not even a compliment; the whole idea that you'd fit right into one of Burton's movies. 😁 😁

Maybe the big takeaway from Cutthroat Island is just... don't be reckless when you're handling casting.

northerncrane4 said:Man, my heart just breaks when I think about how "Cutthroat Island" did at the box office. I watched the whole thing with my eyes wide open and my jaw basically hitting the floor. "Bad Doug!" 🤣 🤣 🙏 🙏

I find it pretty fascinating that the guy even manages to find work after what happened with Island.

If I remember right, Carolco went under because of that movie. That’s a pretty intense little footnote to have on a resume, I guess. 😁 😁

I guess you're right. Honestly, you're probably better off just spending that money at a Chinese restaurant. It'd be about the same experience, I suppose.
This one's easy. FMJ.

I never really loved Apocalypse Now that much, actually... I don't even remember the movie all that well.

Besides that, Kubrick is just the Celluloid God.
