Best movies of 2006? in Movies ·
Jose Miller17 said:Look at him, acting like he just discovered this. I've been following this since the seventh century, and now suddenly he's relevant... besides that, if you binge for even a month, there's still plenty left to watch, rather than everyone adding it to their lists a hundred times over 🙂 🙂 ...
....how embarrassing 😢
absolutely nothing before the end of the 12th century!!!
🙂

Thanks for reminding me why I stopped posting here in the first place. 👋

Since we're already rolling toward the end of the year, I figured I might as well open this thread. In your opinion, which movies were the best or most entertaining ones released this year that we actually had the chance to see here in the States? Please list five or six of your favorites from this year. 🙂

I did a little digging through the first few pages of IMDb, but I couldn't find a thread quite like this, so here it is. If I somehow missed it, my apologies. 😳

Dreamcatcher... Isn't that the one where aliens crawl out of people's butts?

...

I think I'll pass on that one.
The Island of Dr. Moreau in Movies ·
I wouldn't normally care enough to chime in, but I simply cannot resist dropping my two cents regarding Frankenheimer's The Island of Dr. Moreau. So, here it goes:

Dr. Moreau's Mysterious Island

Has anyone actually watched this? Because if you have, maybe someone can explain what the hell is actually happening in this movie?! Personally, I just read the original Wells's novel, so I didn't quite grasp the cinematic adaptation. Why does Dr. Moreau need to paint his face white?! Why does Val Kilmer spend the entire film acting like a complete moron? Why is Marlon Brando wearing a bucket on his head while they pour water into it like his brain is overheating and needs cooling? AND WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMALL THING DRESSED LIKE BRANDO?!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THAT ONE IS, BUT IT'S FREAKIN' ME OUT, MAN!

What’s the plot?

I think everyone knows the gist: a guy ends up on Moreau's island, where Moreau performs experiments to turn animals into humans, a gun goes off, everyone dies, and "there are some things man was not meant to know." Oh, and there's also this hot catgirl who gives a better performance than the lead (which makes sense, since the guy seems to spend the whole movie trying to figure out why he even agreed to act in this mess), she’s all over the screen, she’s the only female character, and the protagonist falls for her. Then she dies while trying to save him from the crazed beast-men. She fails, obviously. Well, they really played us there.

My favorite part is the beginning, when the catgirl shows the Hero the village where Moreau's creatures live. He is, naturally, absolutely revolted. But then suddenly, Moreau, the island owner, appears. Moreau is dressed like a high-society gentleman, rolls up in a limo, is decked out in flowers, and has a face coated in white makeup. WTF?
Hero: "WTF?"
Moreau: "I am Dr. Moreau."
Hero: "WTF?"
Moreau: "These are my children!"
Hero: "WTF?"
Moreau: "The sun bothers me terribly. That's why I always hide from it."
Hero: "WTF?"

(later on in another location)

Moreau: "These are my servants."
(hideous, ugly monsters introduce themselves)
Hero: "WTF?"
Moreau: "And this is Small."
Small: (extends a hand)
Hero: "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMALL THING DRESSED LIKE BRANDO?!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THAT ONE IS, BUT IT'S FREAKIN' ME OUT, MAN!"

Then there's Val Kilmer. He plays the doctor's assistant, who is perpetually full of himself. Okay, Moreau is insane too, but at least there's some logic there. I'll give Kilmer's brilliance credit for realizing exactly what kind of character he was playing. His character is one of those players at a D&D session who, purely out of boredom, spends the whole time trying to screw over the DM and their story:
DM: "Dr. Moreau wants the animals to stop eating meat and become civilized."
Jerk Player: "Fine, I'll drop a bunch of rabbits on the island, slaughter them, and toss them to the beasts."
DM (trying to salvage the game): "And then the good doctor organizes a trial for the animal that ate the rabbit, but forgives it."
Jerk Player: "But I already gave the doctor's servant a pistol with an order to execute that beast in front of everyone."
DM: "..."
Jerk Player: "And then I smash the radio station so the other players can't call for help. And before that, I'll break all the serum bottles that prevent the doctor's 'children' from regressing. Then I'll dress up like the doctor and walk among the animals."
DM: "Hoooooo-keej. And what do you say to them?"
Jerk Player: "Nothing. I just shit myself." (then starts imitating the DM's voice and rambling nonsense)
DM: "Fine. Fine. Okay. Then the servant you gave the gun to earlier pulls it out and shoots you in the heart. Now you're dead. Get lost and don't come back."
Jerk Player: "Hey, why? It was getting really good..."
Kilmer definitely played his role in line with that mindset.

And finally, the crazed beast-men cause a massive explosion of gasoline barrels that were conveniently placed around the island specifically for such occasions. They also somehow scavenge piles of firearms, which I never understood: if Moreau was so sure he had the animals under control, why the hell did he have all that weaponry on the island? If he wasn't sure he could control them, why on earth did he make weapons so accessible to the beasts yet so inaccessible to humans? The film ends with the Hero leaving the island to the prophetic words: "War… What is it good for?". The only ones left on the island are Ron Perlman and THAT SMALL THING DRESSED LIKE BRANDO AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THAT ONE IS, BUT IT'S FREAKIN' ME OUT, MAN!

Of course

South Park poked fun at this movie through their Dr. Macphist, but personally, I found this version to be much more enjoyable.
rapidbison42 said:rapidbison42 betrayed House Stark, while Gaius Baltar betrayed all twelve colonies. The only difference is that the former did it consciously, whereas the latter did it unconsciously.

That’s technically true, though my mental imagery differs slightly: rapidbison42 is essentially a feudal lord who would be out there in full plate armor leading his troops, whereas Gaius Baltar is just some little coward who'd get handled easily by a blonde woman if she actually felt like it.😬
As far as Galactica goes... season 2.5 is wrapped up.
The continuation is highly questionable.😠 😠

Why is that? Also, to prevent us from drifting further off-topic,check in over here. 🙂

Heh, I actually wanted to mention how amusing it is to see an image of Gaius Baltar paired with the username "rapidbison42." Talk about conflicting imagery. 😬

Battlestar Galactica rules! 😉 👍
crimsonmoose3 said:The British are filming V for Vendetta, and it looks incredibly promising.

Uhhh, the movie is being directed by the Wachowski siblings who, well, are listed as producers, though I find it hard to believe they weren't more hands-on. On the bright side, the cast features some great British actors. For instance, Stephen Fry is absolutely brilliant. I should also mention Natalie Portman, though my enthusiasm for her waned after seeing her in the new Star Wars films, so there's that.
Look, were you really trying to catch me slipping? Every single thing I criticize, you just try to dismiss.

Well, what did I do? I'm aware of this thread and the one regarding Underworld II. If I missed any others, my apologies. 😳
crimsonmoose3 said:(...) V for Vendetta. It’ll likely be a hit simply because it’s based on the cult classic graphic novel by Alan Moore, and since it's being produced by British creators, expectations are high. Just look at the track record with return of the swamp monster (even if it isn't technically his novel, it's a different story altogether), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Constantine.

Dude, are you actually trying to scare people away from seeing this movie or what? 😬
kozz said:I honestly feel like Kurt Wimmer doesn't get nearly enough credit for gifting humanity GUN-KATE!!!!!!!!111one

🤣

Please. Gun-wielding Kate Beckinsale wasn't exactly a stroke of genius, though she certainly looked the part. At least in Ultraviolet, we get Katana-UZIs!
Ever since I saw that Samuel L. Jackson was starring in a movie titled "Snakes on a Plane," I have utilized a specialized metric for evaluating Sci-Fi action released in 2006. It is based entirely on three specific criteria:
1. Are there snakes?
2. Are there planes?
3. Is Samuel L. Jackson in it?

If the answer to any two of these questions is "No," then the film is essentially worthless.
Underworld in Movies ·
Underworld is airing on ABC this Saturday. How thrilling. First they ran Van Helsing, and now this. Apparently, some people just can't get enough of Kate Beckinsale.

I'm hoping it's just a rerun because that time slot is absolutely terrible. 😢

ONE IN THE MORNING?!

...

I was actually about to write something incredibly angry, but then I remembered that I never go anywhere on Saturdays anyway, so I might as well watch the show even if it is late. It's not like I have to wake up early on Sunday for Mass or anything. 😬

Perhaps they’ve all been diligently migrating their computer systems to Linux this whole time.

In that case, the Earthmen have already won!

Yes! That terrible propaganda claiming there aren't any telepathic aliens that Americans won't just crush underfoot is completely absurd. I mean, we all know those conquerors from Omicron Persei VI absolutely decimated the US during the Vietnam War. And please, let's not even get started on the film's objectivity! Just because the Elyons are ugly, slimy creatures with tentacles doesn't make them monsters.

I caught this on its opening night in New York City and thought it was pure gold. I’ve watched the video at least once and loved it. But now, ten years older and supposedly more mature, I realize the movie is actually complete garbage... though honestly, I couldn't care less.

...

Wait, what? He plays a mathematician from Jurassic Park! He plays dear John! He plays Jayne from Firefly! He plays President Roslyn from Battlestar Galactica! He plays Data! Then Will Smith punches an alien in the face and yells, "Now, THAT'S what I call a close encounter!" A wall of fire rushes into a tunnel, and even though thousands of people are dying all over L.A., the only thing that matters is that one golden retriever survives! The mathematician from Jurassic Park plants a computer virus in the aliens! And an atomic bomb! New York City and Washington, D.C. leveled to the ground! Law!

Ooh! Now that would be a fantastic movie!
Vepar said:Underworld: Evolution seems alright. (Not that I have high hopes)

Same here. I'll probably just catch that one in theaters since that's really the only movie I've actually sat through in a cinema. It’s been months since I went out with friends to see a film, but we're already making plans for Underworld: Evolution.
I heard the plot for Ultraviolet is terrible, but the action is fantastic. Since it was directed by Kurt Wimmer, the guy behind Equilibrium (the Resident Evil crew has absolutely nothing to do with this one), I'll definitely give it a look.

I hadn't even heard of that movie.

...

I just checked IMDb. Ah! Those movies about sexy martial artists never go out of style. The director of Equilibrium, you say? Hmm. That might be interesting. Perhaps.

Aeon Flux looks ridiculous. From the costumes to the special effects, it looks totally uninspiring.

Agreed. Charlize Theron looks great and all, but I'm not expecting much from a film based on an MTV cartoon. I'll wait for the DVD.
Quote:V for Vendetta looks like the highest quality film on this list.
It’s a little frightening to think what the others might be like. 😬

True, I'll likely head to the theater for that one too. For now, I'm just bracing myself for how little it will actually relate to the comic book.

They really are a special breed of idiot.

Not at all. When you say "F," it's clearly the fifth letter of the alphabet.

I suppose so.

And they actually thought the Roman numeral for five was the letter V!

I mean... even when you say the letter "V," it honestly sounds more like an "F" to me...

....

I'm heading out.

Geez. You're lucky. 😂
no, there was a certain touch of metaphor missing

I really should ask if you even know what the word "metaphor" means, but I have no desire to confuse you unnecessarily. 😳
The issue arises when people assume everything involving glamorous blondes is degrading and unworthy of their time

Not necessarily. Though reading your cluttered posts certainly is.
( aaaaaaaghhh give me my 2 hours back!!!!!, well honey, you took them yourself, 🙄 ),

As does the fifteen minutes it takes to reply to your post. But once that's over, the problem will be solved. 😬
and they actually mock that concept all the way. The Wayans brothers exaggerate sometimes, but occasionally (and quite frequently 😍 ) They hit the MARK! 😁

I hope they do a better job than you. So far, I've read you on four different threads, and every single time you either use some ridiculous, inflated catchphrases or hint at deep meanings in series/movies that you ultimately have nothing to say about.
Basically, it seems you lean more towards stereotypical parodies

Does that mean alternative parodies exist? I wonder what an alternative film parody looks like. I bet it's those movies filmed in Eastern Europe where everyone is played by French existentialists in black turtlenecks, sitting in smoky rooms, smoking unfiltered Galois cigarettes while telling jokes from Aristophanes' "Birds."
Your questionable preferences

And naturally, you are left without a response.
