Am I really that smart? Even without seeing them, I already know both movies are absolute garbage. Not once did I feel even the slightest urge to watch them.😁 😎

btw - total trash. Does that count?

By the way, you’ve still got Minas Morgul and Gorgoroth in the mix...

I've heard bits and pieces about that...

It isn't black metal, but I used to be into Blind Guardian for a while. Then they dropped A Night at the Opera... 🙂

Honestly, where would half these bands even be without Tolkien...

Isengard? Dol Guldur? Lugburz? (I think those are the band names, songs, and albums, right?)

Total hacks...😁

To everyone. 👍

I’m on the same page as everyone else regarding the gap between love and hate. I’ve been chewing on this for a while, and here’s my take:

It all comes down to the end goal. Sure, the intensity is the same. From a purely physiological standpoint, they hit you exactly the same way. They both eat up just as much of your time. But at the end of the day, these two emotions are polar opposites.
Love—it should be the end goal if you want to actually feel fulfilled. That’s my only concession to the skeptics in me. It brings another person into the mix.
Hate as an end goal only leads to destruction. It’s a dead end. There’s just no way to keep her happy. It’s impossible. We can live on love, but we can't survive on hate. Hate just leaves you cold. Love brings the warmth, and we all know which one makes life actually worth living.
Well... what now?

illegale:
What makes it different from the fundamental duality of nature?

Yeah, sure... I used to be the kind of guy who’d argue that love and hate are basically just like protons and neutrons—equal in value, just carrying different charges. Pick whichever sign you want.

Hmm...

Aenea said:Fine.
😁 Let's look at an example.
Henry Barrett11 hates Aenea. But Aenea is actually important to you because the weight of
your own feelings defines the source.
Henry Barrett11 places massive value on his feelings (his hatred) = A.

Is it okay to be obsessed with someone?
Is obsession, generally speaking, a good thing?
Doesn't it just stop you from focusing on anything else?

Why is Henry Barrett11 wasting his energy, his time, his health, and everything else on Aenea
if she’s such a bad person? (Assuming she's bad enough to deserve hate
based on her actions), does she really deserve his attention and time too?

You can't enjoy life when Aenea is taking up all the mental space.
Or have you stopped noticing that, too?

Clever little parable.👍 But I'd point out that any feeling, if fueled enough, leads to the same result.

What if the situation was this:

Henry Barrett11 is in love with Aenea. He’d die for her.
Aenea doesn't love him back. Henry Barrett11 is miserable. It hurts. He can't think about anything else. His entire existence revolves around Aenea. She's the only thing on his mind.
SHE'S OBSESSED WITH HIM.

But hey... that's love. And love can't be bad...😎

Anya said:I’m honestly not sure if I can give a good enough answer here.
I'll give it a shot, though.

Man... why are the simplest questions always the hardest? 😁

I'm trying to figure out how to respond without rambling, without getting too deep into the weeds,
without pretending I've actually been there—which would make it easier—
and without making up some fake scenario just to overanalyze it.

Bottom line: I think hate is bad for the person holding onto it. All those negative feelings
are just a waste of time, energy, health, and peace of mind. It eats at your logic, too.
It's an obsession. That's it.

That's all true.

But love does the exact same thing... it drains your time, your energy, your health, and your sanity. Is that "unnecessary"? "Useless"? Irreversible? And what about unrequited love? Does that even have a purpose?
Are you going to claim love is a negative emotion too?

Or should we just take the philosophical easy way out and say: they're all just emotions.

Solaris and Aeneas...

On an intuitive level, I can feel that hate is just bad news. It eats away at you, corrodes everything, etc. Still, nobody has actually done a decent job of breaking down why it works that way...
When you claim the keyword is ACTION, I assume you're implying the actual consequence is the exact opposite. Personally, I think the value of any feeling is determined by its source—meaning the person feeling it assigns the sign and the absolute value to their own emotions.
What if those stuck in the negatives actually enjoy being there? Aren't they enjoying life in their own way?
I’m not trying to be patronizing here. To prove it, here is a massive

Look, I honestly have no clue... but I’ll try to dig up a few🙂
I'm just wondering—does the person who carries hate actually end up hurting themselves the most? And does seeking revenge even count as hate?
Think about it. I know people who are perfectly happy after screwing over someone they despise, and they don't feel like they've done anything to themselves. So what now?

Alexander Hall said:Look, I already said I don't agree with this, and I still think
hatred doesn't just exist in a vacuum. But if you want my take, you can get over hatred by
treating it like an actual illness. You have to realize that holding onto that hate
hurts you way more than the person you're actually mad at.
After that, you just have to do the work to turn those negative impulses into something positive.

Fine. How?😎

Essence said:The more I think I know, the more I realize how little I actually understand.
Are you really going to push for even more "knowledge" after that😁?

If you want things for me that I don't want for myself, I assume you hate me.
But then again, I can't always be sure what I actually want, because sometimes the fallout of an event doesn't show its true impact until much later.
Your supposedly malicious intentions might actually end up doing me some good.

So how am I supposed to say for certain that you ever hate me?

😉

You’re implying that hate is entirely relative: just because you want something for me that I don't want for myself doesn't mean you wish me ill. So, you're right when you say the consequences aren't immediately clear, and you can't claim to wish me harm. (Does that mean you accept that hate is evil?) I don't know if you remember, but I mentioned earlier that I believe love is a byproduct of reason. I think the same applies to hate. Like any emotion, hate has an expiration date. How can hate become chronic or pathological unless it's being fueled by reason?
Just like you said: you can't truly know if someone hates you. It's pure logic.

Dada:
Yeah, and hate can actually have positive outcomes.

Agreed. It's a matter of logic.

Bradley Fisher20:
Do you agree that hate isn't good for the person feeling it?

Well, that's where the logic breaks down. Emotions are messy, and I honestly have no clue where the line is between good and bad. Just like love can cause misery for the person loving in certain situations, hate can lead to something good.
My last two answers were about the external effects of hate—how it hits the masses—whereas your question focused on the individual.
I think hate can be a great motivator.😎

one fat guy...
Is this thread actually just about hate? I think we've all collectively lost our minds here...

Can someone please give me a decent breakdown: what even is hate?
Is it just the opposite of love? Does Essence think hate is the opposite of an engine—like, just the brakes?
Do we link love to creation and hate to destruction?
Or is it simple: love equals good, and hate equals evil?
I want to hear everyone's take on hate, but specifically this: can hate ever have a positive outcome? Not from the perspective of the person hating (fine, I'm acknowledging human nature), but looking at it from a broader angle?

It takes you back to the very beginning, when all sciences—or arts, if we’re being honest—were actually one single thing.
So, a philosopher was also a physicist, a geographer, and a poet all at once...
Nowadays, physics is crawling back toward philosophy because our tech is lagging about 200 years behind our theories.
"The Death of Philosophy"... that’s a killer book title. I should write that down.
Approaching philosophy is such a sensitive, delicate business... personally, I try not to force an approach. I try to be like water in a container—changing shape while still remaining myself. Though, honestly, sometimes it feels like I'm just talking in circles. Maybe that's just my version of an "approach."

John Walker74 said:Someone once said that just mentioning something makes it real..😎 If we follow that logic, Henry Barrett11, then both of those things exist..😁 But does it all just live inside our heads? That’s probably up to the police—or, you know, personal conviction.

hahahaha... the police😁 👍
I’d love to believe absolute love actually exists. Though I’m becoming more convinced that if it does, it isn't about emotion—it's about reason.
To me, love is higher than just a hormonal rush. It's the conscious awareness of acting or not acting. A rational, deliberate choice to act in someone's best interest (please don't come for me on this one. Fine, whatever, let's call it "well-being")... without needing anything in return.
What people call love in the first three months? That's definitely not it. Not even close.

Clichés stick around because they usually hold some truth. So, I’m with you on that—we really only experience love in contrast to hate...
The real question is whether absolute love and absolute hate actually exist. Or are they just two sides of the same coin?

Man, that was way too easy for him...😎
I'm ready to give up in Spirituality ·
Someone phrased it like this:

God, give me the willpower to stick with the things I can actually change, the strength to stop stressing over the stuff I can't, and the damn wisdom to tell the difference between the two...

I’d love to figure that out myself...
Since there isn't a better way, I just follow my gut.
