shadowsurfer11 said:People who struggle with weight gain—and I’m not talking about those dealing with hormonal imbalances or genetic predispositions here—face a much deeper issue that shows up as constant binge eating. It becomes this endless, vicious cycle that feels impossible to break... though it *can* be broken, if you try hard enough...

I actually wrote to the author earlier suggesting they definitely sit down and talk to a psychologist, because carrying extra weight leaves really deep scars on your psyche, especially when you're young...

Seeing a psychologist is a solid idea, I guess, but maybe just having someone close by who actually gets it would be enough. 😉

And honestly, to deal with that whole "vicious cycle" thing, his family needs to step up big time. They have to clear out all the junk food from the house. If they really want to help, they might even need to lock the kitchen doors at 7 PM or something. 😁
It’s just not going to work if everyone else in the house is snacking on greasy, sugary stuff while he’s stuck staring at a tiny portion of cauliflower on his plate. No way, absolutely not. 😁

William White2 said:and I’ve got this one other issue that I could probably fix if I just stayed disciplined for two weeks, but honestly, I’ve been dragging this thing around since I was a kid.😳

Now, I suppose I should ask, "Well, what's that about?" 😁 😳
(to be totally honest, nothing is coming to mind right now 🤔 )

William White2 said:So, I was watching TV yesterday and saw this segment about this woman who managed to drop 50 pounds in a really short amount of time. And the crazy thing? She didn't do any of those insane, crash diets that everyone talks about—she just focused on working out and having some actual discipline. Seriously, just pure grit and exercise. 😁

Honestly, I think the absolute worst part about this whole cycle is how everyone approaches weight loss. It’s always the same predictable pattern: someone decides they want to slim down and immediately declares, "That's it, I'm not eating a single thing starting tomorrow!" So, they end up starving themselves all morning until lunch, realize pretty quickly that living on nothing is a total disaster, and then—boom—they just completely lose it and start bingeing again. It's a vicious loop, and it never works.

So you’re telling me you're just going to cut out sweets and stick to one meal a day for an entire month, and that's basically the whole plan? Just... boom, done. And then later on, once things settle down, it'll be easier to scale back even more. I guess that's one way to look at it, maybe.

At its core, it’s usually just an addiction to chewing—kind of like what you pointed out earlier. 😉
It probably all starts way back in early childhood—you know, those moments when a kid starts screaming their head off and the mother just immediately shoves a pacifier in their mouth to shut them up. 😁

I don't know if you've ever dealt with being overweight yourself, but man, it can be such a brutal, uphill battle—mostly because you're fighting a war against your own damn self.
I honestly have so much respect for people who manage to drop a massive amount of weight. I mean, seriously, they often end up doing more for their own character and mental toughness than almost anything else in life. 🙂

but I noticed most people seem to be forgetting that neonbear4 mentioned he's only 15, and in one of his posts, he actually said he was undergoing tests because of some hormone issues.

That’s what I want to know, too.
And honestly, what on earth is his mother doing? Is she just letting this happen?
When I was 16, my hormones were totally out of whack and seriously caused me to put on weight, and my mom started cooking much healthier right away after our doctor's visit, and it helped a ton. Though, granted, I had way, way fewer pounds to lose than the OP.
But seriously, where is he? He hasn't checked in at all to say how the diet is going... 🙂

William White2 said:I mean, they’re definitely gaining weight more than if they just didn't eat any of it. Honestly, the name doesn't matter nearly as much as the fact that it's being called something at all.

The other day, I saw some overweight teenager walking down the street aggressively munching on a sandwich. 🤣

So, maybe just chill out a little. 😬

There's a fair amount of truth to that 👍

But that kid... who knows? Maybe they hadn't even had a chance to eat yet, or maybe they won't get to eat again for a while? 😁

Benjamin Ramos95 said:Am I some kind of joke? I'm 27, 6'1", and 230 lbs, and all I eat for lunch when I get home from work is less than my sister, who's barely 110 lbs and spends all day in bed. For dinner around 9 PM, I'll have two slices of bread with deli meat, and that's basically it. I work the 7-to-3 shift, though sometimes I stay later, and honestly, I just don't have the damn time to even hit the cafeteria, let alone go somewhere else. So what am I supposed to do? I don't have time to exercise because sometimes I have chores waiting at home, and at work, I'm sitting there staring at a monitor all day. My only movement is 1.2 miles walking to the bus stop and back. When I worked for that smaller firm as a sales rep, it was literally an 8-to-6 grind spent entirely in a company car; my nerves were shot, and I lived on maybe two walnuts a day, so I wasn't even eating, yet the weight just kept climbing. When am I supposed to get moving if I'm working five or six days a week? Answer = never...

I gained weight when I was stuck in a job that made me miserable.
I was basically living on a pastry and an apple every day, and despite running around all day, I still put on a few pounds. 😲 Plus, I had dark circles under my eyes and looked perpetually exhausted.
After that, I moved into a role that actually fulfilled me and made me happy. It didn't feel like a chore to stay until 8 PM, and we’d usually grab beers afterward. We’d eat kebabs and pizza, and I actually lost weight. 😁
Depression (and everything that triggers it) makes you gain weight. 🙂 At least, that's been my experience. 🙂

If you can find ways to be active, find joy in your daily routine, and approach things with a positive mindset—food stops being such a huge deal, and even what you do eat doesn't seem to stick to you quite as much. 🙂

Charles Morales10 said:I’d actually argue that the first thing this guy needs to do is pack on some muscle mass to get his metabolism moving. I'm talking 5-6 high-protein meals a day paired with some decent complex carbs.

Wait, are you the same guy from that thread about erectile dysfunction? 🤣
God, you all sound exactly the same—like some damn cultists or something. 🙄
What do you mean, muscle mass? Let the kid go on a diet first, and once he drops down to maybe 220 pounds, then he can start hitting the gym.
For Christ's sake. 😁

Edward Green said:you should try using chopsticks 😁

Yeah 👍
So, I had this rice with Sichuan sauce for lunch today, and I decided to grab some chopsticks—you know, to be all appropriate and stuff. 😬 I started the movie and got going. 🙂
Holy crap, by the time I actually finished my plate, half the movie was already over. 🤣 Honestly, between the rice, the sticks, and just the sheer effort of getting food into my mouth... it’s exhausting. 🤣

But hey, it's a fun little challenge. I think I'm getting better at it. Next time I hit up a Chinese spot, I'm not gonna sit there using a fork like some uncultured tourist; I'll act like a total pro and just ask for chopsticks right away. 😎

neonbear4 said:quiethound45, you’ve actually been a huge help
but I still think I’m going to start on the UN diet. It doesn't seem all that daunting compared to what I was doing on my last diet
meaning, I was basically just eating meat and calling it a day, and I had to chug vitamins constantly because I was getting so deficient

I'm not even mad at Edward Green, honestly, because she actually said a lot of things that were true

And one more thing—I really wasn't expecting this kind of support
In all honesty, I’ve received way more encouragement here than I ever did from any doctor
Thanks, everyone, seriously
Once those first results start rolling in, I’ll post them right here
But for now, I'm heading out to get weighed properly so I have actual numbers instead of just guessing

That UN diet is a solid choice 🙂
But you absolutely have to add in some low-fat milk, yogurt, and maybe some low-fat cottage cheese! You’re young and still growing, and you’re definitely going to be missing out on essential calcium with that plan. So, grab a yogurt whenever you feel hungry👍
It's healthy and it'll actually keep you full for a bit.
As for working out—sweetie, go swimming. Once you hit around 220 pounds, you can start running, and then slowly move into the gym.

Edward Green said:Oh yeah, I bet his joints will be just thrilled when he decides to go out for a run at 300 pounds.
Man, I can't tell if you're trolling or if you're just as dense as you are heavy. He's been bouncing from specialist to specialist, trying everything under the sun, but did it ever cross your mind that maybe—just maybe—he shouldn't be eating straight garbage? 👏

Lunch looks fine to me. Stew, meat... that's actually healthy stuff.
The issue seems to be breakfast and dinner, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's some massive, astronomical amount of food.
Teenagers (especially guys) eat whatever they want and still look like sticks.

Either the kid is HIDING what he actually eats, or he’s dealing with a serious metabolic or hormonal issue.
Or, honestly, maybe he's just trolling. 😁

lonefox7 said:You don't even need to be popping vitamin supplements. Honestly, those synthetic vitamin pills aren't exactly great for you, especially if you're just taking them whenever you feel like it—definitely not ideal if your goal is to drop some weight. The UN diet is loaded with fruits and veggies, which are basically the gold standard for vitamins anyway. And the best part? Nothing is off-limits; you just organize everything into food groups.
You just have to stick to the plan and maybe get some light exercise going to start with. It actually works.

But dairy is missing here.
I know this one guy who drinks light yogurt while following this program, and he's doing just fine. 🙂

So what’s the actual issue here? 🙂
And what am I even supposed to be analyzing? 😁

wearygardener13 said:honestly, I think film should be a mandatory subject instead of fine arts🙂

No 🙂
I mean, it should definitely be on par with fine arts, but really only if both are treated as practical, hands-on subjects👍
That would include things like music and creative writing too.
Maybe we could just let students choose their electives based on what they actually enjoy👍
The theory would obviously be taught alongside the actual practice🙂

The only thing I can think of linking this to is being on Yasmin birth control. Has anyone else dealt with side effects like this? Is it actually possible that the pills are causing it?

Honestly, I highly doubt it's from the pills.
Maybe you're just shedding more than usual? 😕 😁

Nicholas Rogers said:restlessmarlin6, you're totally right about PCOS. So, basically, I should say goodbye to my hair if I start taking the pills? Because a friend told me they actually make hair loss even worse.
I'm having a total meltdown of curiosity and anxiety right now. I won't know for sure until my appointment in a week. 🙂
thanks for the answer!!

Look, I've only got one piece of advice for you—stop listening to your friend.🤣
I didn't deal with any hair loss myself, but the treatment definitely cleared up all my other symptoms. 👍 Maybe do a little bit of your own research online; I shouldn't have to do all the legwork for you. 😁
And please, just go see a doctor. Seriously. 👍

I honestly think it’s mostly psychological, especially if you’ve been cutting back on your meals lately.
You'll get used to it eventually.

She’s probably talking about PCOS, which can actually cause thinning or baldness in the 😁 scalp area in certain cases.
As far as I know, therapy should help normalize the hair loss 🙂
