Sorry, but I just can't bring myself to say the new stuff is equal to or better than the old stuff. :/ Well, you technically can, because that's your call I don't know. For me, the new material keeps getting better, even if it doesn't hit quite as hard on the very first listen as that debut album did. ☕
Alright, let's go through this step by step, day two...
Pitchfork - I listened to one of their albums a few years back, and honestly, nothing really stuck with me... it felt pretty much the same way about this set. The first track was definitely the highlight (someone please remind me which one it was). There were moments where it sounded really cool and polished, but then the sax just kind of breaks the vibe :) It’s still daytime and the sun is out, giving off such a positive energy... but then I realized my attention span starts slipping halfway through every song :/ The vocalist reminds me a bit of the guy from Band of Horses.😬
Caribou - ******** 🙏 🙏 🙏 They used to play outdoor shows before, and it wasn't shoulder-to-shoulder crowded like those sets in Seattle; you actually had space to dance. The lighting really added to the whole experience, there was a nice little breeze here and there, and then that sun hits you... 😵 pure trance. That's just what Caribou does—they pull people into a trance. For me, it was 😍 the best performance, strictly looking at the quality from the very start to the end of the set.👍
I only caught the last few bits of The Flaming Lips... nothing special... I've listened to their album a few times and it never really clicked for me, idk. All that nonsense with the balloons and the hands—fine, it looked decent enough... but when I hear all these stories about hippie nonsense : rigo: Caribou > The Flaming Lips We're talking about music, right? If you stripped away all that colorful spectacle, would it even be that great? :/
New Young Pony Club - At first, I couldn't wrap my head around how this was supposed to be a reincarnation of Indietracks on a stage. And like Charles James9 said, why do they force us to shout "yeah!" and "make some noise" and all that stuff? *No thanks, I'm not into being forced. But then, they either leveled up or just relaxed, started playing tracks from their old album—which still somehow can't touch the first one—and something just clicked The most fun, most danceable set of the bunch. Total chaos and jumping around in the front rows.👋
Massive Attack - Same as The Flaming Lips, I think I only heard the last twenty minutes. But man, what I did hear :S such powerful sound. 😲 Hats off to them. But coming straight after NYPC, that melancholy hit me pretty hard. You really need to listen to them in a quiet setting... though I'm sure they'll be back... it's not like it's their first time.🙂
I honestly can't forgive LCD Soundsystem for skipping "Someone Great." 😠 I mean, seriously? And I have to agree with what Olivia Walker30 said—that ending felt way too forced. They could have at least thrown in "New York, I Love You" to wrap things up properly. 😢 At times, they were genuinely incredible—"Tribulations," for instance—but then things would just stretch out and become tedious. 🤷 On top of that, the lead mic on that stage was turned down so low it felt like someone was singing from a confessional booth. :confused
!!! absolutely the best 🙏 🙏 Heart of Hearts and Yadnus 👋 I had no idea the singer was so flamboyant, lol. His dancing just didn't seem to match the intensity of the music at all. Oh well, at least they're unique. : )
I listened to One Piece for the first time... though maybe only about three or four songs. Their sound is fantastic and the vocalist is incredibly charismatic, no doubt about it. My only gripe is that the lyrics feel a bit shallow; it feels like every other song is just about Heroin, and they could really use some more lyrical depth. 😁
Billy, 🤣 I'm not sure what to say about it... I missed "Eyes Without a Face," which is probably the only track that still holds up perfectly as a standalone song today. 😍 It was obvious the big hits were saved for the end—classic old-school move. 🤮 Otherwise, it was predictable and honestly kind of dull. In my opinion, there wasn't much to it... just a bunch of nostalgic fans showing up to relive their youth.
Everything is lining up perfectly 🤮 Billy Idol is playing, Caribou is joining The Flaming Lips, and New York City is bringing Massive Attack :2up: I’m going to have a word with the organizers about this one
