I'll just jump into this existing thread instead of cluttering things up with a new one.
I’m looking to swap out a few parts—honestly, anything that makes sense right now and actually gives me some bang for my buck. Lately, I've been staring at my memory situation more than anything else.
Here’s what I’m currently running: Motherboard: ASUS motherboard CPU: AMD FX-8370E GPU: Nvidia GTX 760 RAM: 2 x 4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz Monitor: LG 27MP59G-P 128 GB SSD and some 1.5 TB HDDs
Surprisingly, my GPU is still holding its own—no real issues at 1080p—so I was leaning toward upgrading the RAM. But since this board doesn't support DDR4, does it even make sense to pick up another 2 x 4 GB sticks of DDR3? Or is it smarter to just look ahead, grab 16 GB of DDR4, and hunt for a new motherboard (any recommendations? 🤷)?
I’ve got an AMD FX X8 8370 E on the way—I already have a Zalman cooler ready for the CPU—and I'm also picking up a BlackWidow keyboard once I finally get around to tearing this whole rig apart. 😁 I grabbed some replacement GPU fans off eBay, so I guess I'll just stick with what I've got for now. I'll probably need to run a BIOS update on the F8f, which is still stuck in a beta phase from back in December 2013 (lol).
Interesting. Should I grab this? Or maybe aim for something a bit better? And what’s the deal with the graphics card—am I stuck with this one for a while longer, or not? You guys just completely flipped my priority list on me. 😁
I don't actually have any major issues with my rig, except for the fact that one of the fans on my graphics card finally gave up the ghost. Now, temperatures are spiking north of 80°C while I'm gaming—which means half the chips on that board are probably slowly dying, right? Everything still runs fine on mid-to-high settings, though. Since the card is getting pretty old, I've been thinking about an upgrade... I could always try overclocking the CPU, since it's still sitting at 3.2 GHz.
Honestly, I never realized just how competitive this card actually was. So, for an upgrade, should I just hold out for an AMD Radeon RX 570, or stretch my budget a bit for a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060? If I go that route, I’d definitely be aiming for the 6 GB version. Or, is there even a way to just swap out the fans myself if that's even possible? 😬
I could really use some advice on a new purchase because, honestly, I haven't kept up with the GPU market at all over the last few years.
Here’s what I’m running right now:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster T220
I'm stuck in a bit of a three-way dilemma regarding these specific cards:
AMD Radeon RX 560 4 GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
AMD Radeon RX 570
The real headache is mostly between the first two when it comes to the price tag—I'm just not sure if the RX 570 is actually worth jumping up for if it costs an extra $50 or so. And of course, if I start leaning toward the RX 570, then I realize the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 isn't much more expensive, and the whole cycle just starts all over again... Beyond raw performance, I care about decent cooling, quiet operation, and how long the card will actually last before dying on me. It's strictly for gaming; I have zero interest in mining. Also, does it make sense to think about upgrading to a new monitor now that I'm looking at a new GPU?
Honestly, for the last decade or so, I’ve pretty much stuck to solid power supplies in the 450 to 550 W range. If my previous ones hadn't kicked the bucket on me, I’d probably still be running them today—age really doesn't matter if the hardware actually works, right?
In the end, though, I decided to pull the trigger on an EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G5. It wasn't just about getting that factory warranty, either; I wanted something quiet, something that wouldn't act like a vacuum cleaner for dust, and something reliable enough to handle some light overclocking on my GPU and CPU—since, given how old they are it's time to go with a bang 😉.
NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti, you're spot on. Man, has it really been five years already? 😁 The processor is an Intel Core i7. It’s a 965, I think—I can't recall off the top of my head and I don't have the boxes handy.
I figured the power supply was overkill, but now I'm wondering... is it actually worth shelling out $83 more just to get that 10-year warranty?
My power supply finally gave up the ghost. 😢 It was an EVGA GS500, about four and a half years old now. Honestly, kind of a letdown—it ran 24/7 without a single hiccup until now. 🙂
So, what should I be looking at for a replacement? Right now, I’m running an NVIDIA GTX 860 with an MSI Twin Frozr cooler (or something close to that, I can't be 100% sure on the exact model, but it has both 8-pin and 6-pin connectors), a CPU paired with a Cooler Master cooler, a couple of Hard Drives, and one SSD. My case doesn't even have extra fans. I am planning to upgrade to an NVIDIA GTX 1060 pretty soon, though.
I've been eyeing the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G5, but I'm torn—am I just overspending on something way more powerful than I actually need? Any suggestions?
Where did all that nonsense about the "Maestro" Zalons go? You know, the endless talk about how he was some kind of genius while everyone else was just a bunch of "frauds"?🙂
