The actual Black Metal genre, at least as most people define it today, really kicked off
with Varg and Burzum, along with Dark Throne and Mayhem. If you want to get technical, you could even throw in those older acts like Uruk-hai and Old Funeral.
But you can't really lump Mercyful Fate, Venom, or King Diamond into the modern Black Metal conversation; the sound has evolved so much since then that they're in a completely different league.

It honestly cracks me up seeing that a supposed "true" Black Metal head like you hasn't even heard of Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, or Bathory...

I mean, sure, you could try to draw a line between Mercyful Fate or King Diamond and Black Metal just because of their Satanic lyrics, but musically? Not even close.

Venom and Celtic Frost are basically proto-black—more like this dark, gritty version of Thrash if you ask me.

The Black Metal we recognize today is built almost entirely on the foundation laid by Hellhammer (think that Apocalyptic Raids EP from '84) and Bathory (specifically Under the Sign of Black Mark from 1987). Euronymous just took that blueprint and cranked the intensity way up to make it more extreme. Then you had Immortal and Dark Throne jump on board to fuel the movement, while Varg was essentially just riding the wave the whole time. 🙂

hehe, I totally get where you're coming from there 😉

1. The old-school classics, mostly Thrash (think Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Forbidden, Testament, Violence, Annihilator...)
2. Heavy Metal, mainly that NWOBHM vibe (Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Saxon, Samson) plus a few legends like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest
3. Power Metal, though I’m leaning way more toward that American Thrash/Power style—like Iced Earth—rather than the classic Helloween type stuff

Most of my favorites fall under Thrash, except for Iron Maiden, who basically forced their way into the second spot on my list and just refuse to budge😁

4. Iced Earth
5. Megadeth
6. Exodus
7. Forbidden
8. Judas Priest
9. Testament
10. Annihilator

Honestly, this top 10 is pretty much irrelevant anyway; my top three stay pretty much locked in their spots, but everything else shifts around almost every single day😉
