Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
bluetinker17 said:So thanks, I guess that means I can 🙂. Honestly, I’m kind of looking forward to seeing how that beastly Windows 7 performs 🙂. My rig is pretty old, but hey, I’m not trying to run high-end games or anything, just some basic browsing and stuff 🙂

What's the CPU speed on that thing, and how much RAM are we talking about? 🙂

Roger Brown50 said:Anyone know of a gadget or some kind of tool for Hotmail? The damn thing won't give me any notifications when a new email hits my inbox. I have to manually go to the site every single time just to see if anything actually showed up. I saw some way to do it with Gmail, but does anyone have a fix for this?😉

Just set up a Gmail account and forward everything from your Hotmail over there. Problem solved. Done. Simple as that. 😁

Joshua Garcia3 said:Anything is possible, I guess, but nothing's free. When you're pulling the trigger on a purchase, you've gotta be specific about how many licenses you're actually grabbing. There’s no such thing as an unlimited pass. 🙂

Yeah, that’s what I figured. If there’s no unlimited option on the table, I guess I’m just sticking with my "originals." What else is there to do, right? 👍

Thanks.

So I was thinking about picking up some legitimate copies of Windows 7 Professional—both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions

but here's the thing... is there even such a thing as a license that lets you install it on basically an unlimited number of machines? Like, could I just hand them out to whoever I want without any legal headaches? Is that even a real possibility or am I just dreaming?

Thanks, man 👍

Opera was saving my passwords all along, I just didn't realize I had to actually click that little "key" icon whenever I logged into a profile, you know? Total oversight on my part.

Anyway, it's all good now. Opera is officially my favorite browser, hands down. 😁

Benjamin King2 said:You can actually use this little utility to see and dump all your passwords into a .txt file if you want -> http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opera_p..._recovery.html

And here’s a guide on what files you need to grab so you can just drop them back into the exact same spot after a fresh install -> http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/313/

Benjamin King2, I was wondering... can I use this tool to save my passwords in Opera when I log into sites?

Because for some reason, Opera just refuses to remember any of my passwords no matter what site I'm on.

I can't believe I'm even looking at this right now. Seriously. Another day, another massive headache involving our national infrastructure. You see these headlines and you just have to wonder... does anyone actually have their act together over at the federal level? Probably not. It’s the same old story, isn't it? Some major system goes sideways, everyone starts sweating, and we’re all left wondering if our data is basically sitting out on a sidewalk in downtown Chicago for anyone to grab. It’s exhausting. Honestly, why do we even bother with these massive centralized setups if they're just going to be a giant target for every script kiddie with a laptop? Is it incompetence? Is it just bad luck? Or is it just how things work now? Everything feels so fragile lately. One minute everything is running smooth, the next, the whole house of cards starts shaking. Just more noise in an already loud world. What can you even do besides wait for some official statement that probably won't tell us anything useful anyway? Typical.

Oh, by the way, if you're looking for that MAC address, just right-click the LAN connection—you know, that little network icon sitting over by the taskbar in the bottom right corner. 😬So, you just go ahead and click "Status," then hit "Support," and finally grab "Details." Under the Physical address section, you’re gonna see this string of six hex numbers staring back at you. Yep, that’s your MAC address right there. Simple enough, right?
You can probably dig that up using the Command Line too: just run ipconfig /all.

Some link is totally wrecking things. If you can't track down the right one, just try this instead:

I can't even begin to deal with this link. Seriously, what am I supposed to do with this? Just stare at it? It’s just some broken redirect from a Google search that looks like it was cobbled together in a basement somewhere. Why does the internet even work like this sometimes? You click something thinking you're actually going somewhere, and instead, you just get stuck in some digital loop of nothingness. Honestly, it’s just another day in this chaotic mess we call the web. What's the point?

Alright, thanks for the links. 👍 I'll give it a shot once I finally get back home. Right now I'm stuck messing around with some wireless connection that is absolute garbage... honestly, what even is this?

Thomas Hernandez21 said:Or just keep it simple and run "ipconfig /all" through the Command Line. Why make things harder than they need to be?

Ready when you are. Throw it at me. 👍

Thomas Hernandez21 I can't even begin to explain this one... just one of those days where nothing makes sense, you know? It’s like everything we thought we knew about how things work is just... gone. Just evaporated. Anyway, what was I saying? Oh, right. So, basically...
I think we’re talking past each other here. One person’s looking at the desktop as the actual hardware sitting on their desk, while the other thinks we're just talking about the workspace on the screen... Honestly, maybe just get on the same page first. 😍

If this applies to me... man, I honestly thought we were talking about a desktop.
Desktop PC... if that ain't the term, then I don't know what you'd call it. 🙂

[QUOTE: ...you probably haven't even tried booting a computer over a LAN before...]

>Charles Stewart69<
Man, that part actually caught my eye. Does anyone out there know a decent tutorial on how to pull that off?
Like, say I wanted to use a laptop to boot an OS onto a desktop via a LAN cable... any chance someone could point me in the right direction?
If it's not too much trouble, obviously.

Thanks.

Lawrence Doyle7 said:So, the guy installed it in like 15 or 20 minutes flat... no clue how. Guess it's on them. It worked for a few days, still works now, but I keep getting this prompt asking for a Windows 7 DVD... which I don't have. I'd have to pay up first then wait three weeks for a retail version, and they're telling me the retail one is just a 32-bit DVD? I could've sworn there were two versions, 32 and 64-bit...

Yeah, I used RegSeeker to scrub my registry too, and then everything crashed. Maybe I broke it myself? Who knows... all I know is I need Windows 7 and I gotta figure something out.

Installing Windows 7—whether it's the 32-bit or 64-bit version—takes me about 22 minutes 😁
using my "legit" copies 👍

Lawrence Doyle7 said:Whether you're running a copy or the real deal, it’s all legal in my book—it's just that you've basically become dependent on everyone else. You’d lose your mind if you had to deal with constant patches, service packs, and all that junk, right? But I can't live without them. It is what it is... depends on how you want to play the game. As long as your system hasn't completely crapped out, you're doing alright. Personally, mine dies every two days. Some guy finally installed Windows 7 on my machine just so he could get me off his back... I guess every cloud has a silver lining, huh?

clearly those installs were garbage

enough about piracy from me (not exactly the best topic to bring up when you're staring down a ban)😁

Lawrence Doyle7 said:I'm telling you, some guy installed a fake version of Windows 7 on my rig and the whole thing crapped out in two days. But man, it was enough to get me hooked. Now that I'm back on XP like I am now, it feels like a total crisis... sticking to the classics is the only way...

Hope I don't get banned for being brutally honest here, but whatever.

I'm always running copies (mostly because I'm broke and can't swing the price for official installs—if I had the cash, obviously I'd buy them). My system hasn't crashed once, at least not until I personally break it myself.😁

Lawrence Doyle7 said:Look, it’s hard to tell if someone’s actually joking or being dead serious half the time. I figured it was just a joke, and I think Joshua Garcia3 took it that way too... anyway, good luck to him. And yeah, I get it, I take the mods' criticism without complaining...

Thanks for the backup. I'm definitely gonna give this install a shot. I've got plenty of info now, and honestly, if I had an OS ready to go right this second, I'd be diving in immediately—especially with all the help from the folks on this US forum... I'll know more tomorrow once I get my hands on Windows 7... and there won't be any waiting around once I have it. After just two days of browsing, I'm already hooked on Windows 7. Windows XP belongs in a museum at this point...

I've been running Windows 7 on my desktop for like 9 or 10 months now, and honestly, I can't even imagine using anything else on my main rig

On my laptop, though, I'm stuck with Windows XP SP3. It's an older machine, so trying to force Windows 7 onto it would just be a nightmare

But as far as Windows 7 goes? It's awesome

Lawrence Doyle7 said:Joshua Garcia3, what's with the attitude? You got nothing better to do than obsess over a Windows installation? Look, I'm only on day two of this whole thing, and I'm basically one step away from having zero more questions left—so you can finally escape my "terror." Besides, maybe someone else actually needs this info. Weren't you in the exact same boat, clueless about how to install stuff, not that long ago?

I can't even start the install for another week until my Windows 7 shows up. What am I supposed to do then? Just wing it while you're off being MIA from the forum? Isn't it smarter to ask now so I'm not stuck waiting around to see if you decide to log on or not?

Look man, Joshua Garcia3 is always around here (I know that for a fact, 😁) 👍

And as for him being "nervous"... yeah, you're way off on that one. 🙂
All you'll hear about him is praise—he's a top-tier moderator, seriously. 😁

Regarding that Windows 7 install... once I figured out how to do it right (which was like, twenty times before it clicked), anyone can do it.
I didn't know much either. Just poked around, searched a bit, and thanks to this forum, everything went smooth as silk.
You don't learn anything until you actually get your hands dirty. 👍

Anyway, hope it all goes according to plan. It's pretty hard to screw this up.

(my own video) 😁

So, can you actually just patch things up on Windows 7 without having to do a full reinstall?
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Lawrence Doyle7 said:I've got a question:

So, I just picked up a laptop, but it came with some sketchy, pirated version of Windows 7 pre-installed. The thing was acting crazy—crashing and rebooting on its own a few times—before finally just giving up the ghost after three days. Now I'm looking to do things right and buy a legitimate version of Windows 7. My big question is about the actual setup... when I go to install it, should I run it as an upgrade, a clean install, or just act like there was never anything on there to begin with? Basically, can I mess this up by buying the wrong kind of software? Like, are there specific versions meant for upgrades versus those for a "clean" install, or does any Windows 7 license work regardless? If anyone could give me the short version, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

If you grab it from an authorized retailer or a legit shop, you should be getting the full installation disc (which, let's face it, isn't cheap)
As for the install itself? Honestly, just wipe the old drive completely. Format everything, get rid of the junk, and then run that fresh, official installer you're buying. It’ll save you a massive headache later.
