Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Jason Harris5 said:not fair... you just scored yours through work... I actually had to hunt them down on a retail shelf🙂

(and they were out of stock forever...)

I didn't even buy mine, so they run perfectly fine😁
Look, if you’re really dead set on getting those subtitles to actually work in your media player, just grab the K-Lite codec pack. Don't go messing with any of the settings—just leave everything at the defaults, but make sure you check the box so it supports every video format out there. When the installer gets to the end, it’s gonna ask which player you want to use:
-Media Player Home Cinema (which comes bundled with the codecs) and
-Windows Media Player. Just select both of them, and boom, you'll have your subtitles working in Windows Media Player 🙂

Kevin Myers said:Just jumping in here—I fix PCs for a living, and honestly, my workload has been exploding since Windows 7 hit the shelves... not because it’s actually bad software, God forbid, but just because everything keeps breaking... So, if you're one of those people who loves reinstalling Windows every single month or even sooner, I highly recommend grabbing Windows 7... :P

Personally, I've been running Windows 7 for a year now without a single hiccup. Sure, I wiped the drive once, but that wasn't because the OS crashed or anything,
it was just because I wanted to freshen things up and get some more speed out of the rig 😁

I'm totally happy with Windows 7

Is there any way to actually scrub a program off my hard drive after I uninstall it? Like, really wipe it clean

I want to make sure the HDD doesn't even realize it was ever there when I try to run a fresh install on Windows 7

Taylor Morales31 said:And it probably just adapts to whatever RAM you throw at it—like, if you don't max it out, it might run fine. If you bump it up to 4GB, suddenly it’s running everything under the sun. I guess that's just how it goes when you're testing a setup; it might work okay with just a single gig, who knows?

Look, like I said, I've been messing around with this ancient laptop that's stuck with maybe 256 or 512MB of RAM, basically just using it to watch TV via an antenna,
I honestly haven't had the energy to see how it handles actual daily tasks, but my gut tells me it’s gonna be a struggle.👍

With 768MB of RAM? Yeah, right. You aren't doing anything on that thing besides watching movies or something similar.
---------------------
I already mentioned my motherboard is absolute garbage and tops out at 2GB of RAM anyway, so why even bother throwing money at it? I'm just looking to pick up a new one instead.😁 👍

Nathan Ramos62 said:Yeah, if you can get it running without any headaches, that would be killer

Just follow those BIOS and installation tweaks cosmicrider5 laid out for you. Honestly, I’ve been running Windows 7 on a measly 1GB of RAM for over a year now, still gaming and doing my thing just fine. 👍

I know, I know... most people are gonna tell me I'm an idiot for sticking with Windows 7 on 1GB, but hey, it works perfectly fine. It actually feels snappier than when I was stuck on Windows XP with that ancient rig. 😁

Look, having at least 2GB is obviously better, but even with 1GB, it'll work 100% reliably.

Nathan Ramos62 said:maybe the reason I'm struggling is because I'm short on RAM... honestly, even if the specs say one thing, you probably really need 2 gigs to make it work properly.

Nah, you can totally run it on 1GB of RAM without any issues.👍

Nathan Ramos62 said:I was just messing around with that disc at a buddy's place yesterday and everything worked fine, even on x64.

I follow all the steps, plenty of disk space, then suddenly—bam—black screen, reboot, and I'm right back in XP.

I read somewhere that maybe it's an issue with AHCI in the BIOS, but honestly, I'm totally lost here.

Look, when you're installing Windows 7, it's totally normal for the PC to reboot itself a few times during the process. But if your DVD isn't bunk and you're pretty sure you aren't screwing up the steps... man, I don't know what else to tell you.🤷

Nathan Ramos62 said:Yeah, I did. But then the second I try doing it again, the whole thing breaks, and after that? Forget about it. Even Windows XP is gone.

Are you even sure that install DVD isn't a dud?
I mean, I assume you actually know what you're doing when it comes to installing Windows 7, right?

Nathan Ramos62 said:Hey there. I'm running into a wall trying to install Windows 7. I've got this 80GB partition ready to go, but instead of showing up as primary, it's listed as logical. I've been following the usual steps and everything seems fine at first—it hits the "copying Windows files" stage, checks the box, moves right along to "Expanding Windows Files." But that's where the wheels fall off. When it hits about 27%, I just pull the plug, reboot, and somehow it works. But then? Once it reaches 36%, the screen just goes black and the whole thing restarts, booting me right back into my old Windows XP. Anyone have a clue what's going on here? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!

did you actually format the partition where XP is sitting before you started

Is this some kind of game or whatever? Like, does the extraction not even start, or does it just crash halfway through?

Though, I wouldn't even call it a full change... more like just trimming down what I've got right now
Douglas Garcia52 yes just leave it as Douglas Garcia

Hopefully it's doable. Thanks. 👍

Laura Hill2 said:okay 😁 thanks so much 🙂

so... a buddy told me I could just borrow a disc with the sedmica on it and said I wouldn't even need to wipe anything, just run the installer like any other regular program. at least that's how he did it. :S
now I'm just lost. is it actually possible to do it the way he said?

if you're running XP right now, you've gotta format everything

anyway, Noah Sanchez39 sent over a link with the step-by-step instructions on how to handle it 👍

Laura Hill2 said:hey 😁

so... I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 but I'm low-key freaking out about losing everything (songs, pics, movies, whatever) 😕
most of my stuff is on my E drive, but still... 🤷

can someone please explain what I should do? Is it actually safe? Like, will all my files on the E drive just stay put even after I wipe Windows and install Windows 7?
thanks in advance 🙏

Just install it on a different partition where you don't have your movies and music sitting around... basically where your old Windows lives, which is usually the "C" drive in most setups
and you won't lose any of your data 👍
but before you touch anything, just be smart and move the important stuff to another partition—your music, your movies—especially if they're spread out across more than one drive

Issues with Gom player in Software ·

I was just messing around with the settings in that adjuster, nothing too deep, and I finally figured out how to split a subtitle into two parts.
Honestly, this tutorial makes everything way smoother. Not that I have the patience to sit around fixing wonky, broken subtitles anyway—if they're garbage, I'll just grab a new file and move on with my life.

Still, thanks for the guide. Might actually come in handy down the road. 👍

Morgan Bishop4 said:I couldn't even find subtitles for part two of this movie. Most of those other films with garbage subs are just random Bollywood stuff anyway... honestly, I'll take crappy English subs that I have to manually fix over nothing at all, damn it.

If you use that SubRip program from the link in my post, it actually gives you extra tools for editing—stuff like merging files, splitting them up, fixing the timing, all that jazz.

Just mess around with it a bit, try to build something yourself. 👍
I haven't really sat down to use it much myself, so I can't give you the deep dive, but I know it’s got some pretty decent options if you need to tweak subtitles.

Morgan Bishop4 said:Yeah, thanks... but honestly, I just ended up downloading BS Player at the end of it all. At least there I can manually adjust the delay to whatever I want. It’s a pain in the ass, though—I have way too many crappy subtitles lying around.

If you're looking at newer movies, finding a decent, pinpoint translation is a breeze. It’s basically a layup.
Man, you’ve got like a million different sites out there just for grabbing subtitles. It's endless.

If they’re older models, yeah, most of them usually have issues... but honestly, it's a bit easier to deal with when you're looking at the newer stuff. 👍

Taylor Morales31 said:Well then just write down how you did it, might actually help someone out else 👍

totally forgot to mention what the actual issue was

The whole mess was because of those K-Lite codecs. And please, don't even start with the "it's impossible" crowd—it's definitely doable. I just ripped out the old K-Lite stuff and installed the >combined community codec pack< instead.

Tried checking the rating again after that and managed to refresh it without any of those annoying error messages popping up. It's working fine now. 👍

Douglas Garcia52 said:Until yesterday, my system rating was blacked out when it’s usually blue. I ran a system update and now the whole rating thing just vanished. Tried getting it back, but nothing's working.

I tried refreshing it, same way I always have.

Tried every single combination—you know, the green stuff in the pic—to get it back, but nope, zero luck.

When it starts the refresh process, it hits this part (see pic 3) and just throws an error at me.
image

Anyone know what the deal is? System Restore isn't gonna save me because the rating was already black before the update. If I roll it back, I'll just be stuck with that black screen again.
Is there some other way to tweak this?
The OS itself is fine, everything runs smooth, it's just this stupid rating messing things up.

Problem solved, though. Didn't need anyone's help.😁
Just did some thinking, messed around with a few ideas, and finally nailed it.😁
Anyway, thanks.👍
