They probably won't dive in just yet—they're still a bit too young... maybe in a few years, but by then the whole metal scene will have moved on and they won't be pulling those late-night shifts anymore 😁 😛 🙄

What's your favorite US band?

If the guys from that one legendary 🙄 American rock band ever found out about the heated debates they spark online 🙄 😛
BTW, rapidskipper9, I think it’s high time you took some vacation days and dragged Jack the Ripper along for the ride 😛 As for me, Lucinda Williams could tag along too 🙂

Is spirit everything?

stormywolf2 said:People tend to view God through the lens of what they actually understand about Him. Naturally, the psychology behind those perceptions ends up driving how people act in the world.
Max Planck once suggested that matter doesn't really exist in any absolute sense—it's just a fabric woven from energies that an intelligent Spirit gives shape to.
Arthur Eddington put it similarly, noting that the very fabric of our world is essentially spiritual in nature.
Just throwing those out there as illustrations—I don't want to spend the whole day quoting textbooks.
stormywolf2, I’m not entirely sure how accurate that second sentence is, but in my eyes, it’s the real heart of this entire discussion.
It feels like we might be chasing a pseudo-problem here. If everything is spirit and everything is matter—what does that actually imply? What’s the real weight behind those claims? I think we need to pin down what those statements actually mean before we can even begin to analyze the consequences of such a worldview.
As for me, I don't really hold a firm stance on this. Whenever I try to wrap my head around these deep, existential questions, I feel the ground slipping away beneath me—I start drifting into the waters of intuition and vague impressions... and honestly, I'm not a fan of that feeling. 🙄
How much is our human mind even capable of judging when it comes to stuff like this?
1. Roy Batty
2. R2-D2 & C3PO - Star Wars
3. HAL 9000 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
4. Terminator
Though, there are two other instances that sort of sit right on the edge of this list—more like extreme outliers, really:
1. Seven of Nine🙏 🙏 🙏
2. Darth Vader🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

Is psychology actually a science?
in Psychology ·
Drew Reed6,
1) Modern psychology doesn't really have much to do with Jung. That doesn't take away from his massive contribution to Western thought—not by a long shot—but calling him a "scientist" in the strictest, most modern sense of the word feels like a bit of a stretch.
2) The whole mind-matter connection? Isn't that just common sense at this point? I'm curious why we give Jung such a special spotlight in that conversation.

Pocahontas (Neil Young)
The Aurora Borealis
That frozen night sky
but the firesticks and the wagons...
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man to the fields of green
And the homeland we've never seen
They killed us in our teepees
And they cut our women down
They might have left some babies
Cryin' on the ground
but the firesticks and the wagons...
And the night falls on the settin' sun
They massacred the buffalo
Kitty-corner from the bank
Taxis run across my feet
And my eyes have turned to blanks
In my little box at the top of the stairs
With my Indian rug and a pipe to share
I wish I was a trapper
I would give a thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt
In the mornin' on the fields of green
In the homeland we've never seen
And maybe Marlon Brando
Will be there by the fire
We'll sit and talk about Hollywood
And the good things there for hire
Like the Astrodome and the first teepee
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me

If it's just genetics + environment...

I’m honestly struggling to see any connection at all between sentence one and sentence two. 😕 😉
BTW, when you combine genetics with the right environment, you can create some pretty beautiful things... including the illusion of free will.

Rape: Fact or Fiction?
in Philosophy ·
north wind said:Sure, misuse—or even outright abuse—is always a possibility, but proving those cases isn't easy, just like proving legitimate "use," since we're talking about the exact same underlying mechanics.😉 Besides, all those rumors about students and professors? There’s plenty of truth and plenty of fiction flying around both ways, much like how expectations differ depending on which side of the desk you're sitting on.😉
1. My bad—I clearly lost track of the fact that the word "abuse" isn't exactly in 🙄 😉
2. Regarding those different expectations—I recall some study (can't remember the authors offhand, but I could look it up, and the specifics are a bit fuzzy) where they showed participants various photos of people with certain positive facial expressions. Generally speaking, the guys were way more likely to interpret those looks as "they're flirting, they want to hook up, etc.," whereas the women mostly saw them as "Okay, they're just being friendly or happy."
Look, ladies, evolution basically hardwired us guys to scan for any possible sign that sex might be on the horizon—even if we end up jumping to the wrong conclusion once in a while. 🙄 😢 😛
You've got it rough dealing with us. 😳
Rape: Fact or Fiction?

North Wind, you’re describing what I’d call a pretty clean-cut situation. In the spirit of this thread—which seems to be about how people tend to relativize the misuse of "masculinity"—I wanted to pose a question: is it actually possible for women to weaponize false accusations of harassment?
I can think of one specific instance—it involved a certain college student, who was undeniably attractive but, let's be honest, not exactly the brightest bulb in the box—who completely fabricated a story about being harassed by one of her professors.

1. "No" means "no"—it’s really that simple. There isn't much room for debate there. placidorca16 👍 Just one thought from my side—in our neck of the woods, the penalties are definitely way too light.
2. Vanessa, I get where you're coming from, but I think you phrased that in all the wrong ways.
3. Alright, let me be a bit of a contrarian here: rape is a clear-cut case of 🙄, but what about this whole "sexual harassment" thing? Where do we actually draw the line? Is every single compliment now considered harassment? Does an attempt at flirting count? Let's look at a hypothetical scenario: picture a guy living in a suburb outside of Chicago, working ten-hour shifts, commuting an hour each way, and mostly keeping to himself with the neighbors. If he's looking for a partner, his workplace might be his only real social outlet. What happens if the woman he tries to charm views it as harassment and files a report? Are there any concrete criteria? Apparently, even in the USA, there have been instances where women threaten harassment claims just to squeeze some money out of the alleged offenders.

On top of everything, there's no Fear
in Psychology ·
I'm not really getting into the nitty-gritty of what's happening here, but since I happen to be a bit of a mentalist, I figured I’d offer some services. To start things off, Litany against fear. Let's all recite it together:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
I will face my fear and
I will let it pass through me.
When the fear is gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
(And here we go again...)

crimsonjackal8... I actually disagree—I don't think Jackson messed up LOTR at all.
Oh, here we go again 😠 Seriously, those two LOTR threads covered everything there is to say.
My final word on The Two Towers: 🙂 🙂
We'll just have to wait and see how Fincher's "Meeting with Ram" or Proyas's "I, Robot" turns out.
What are they even trying to pull? 😢 😢 😢 Man. But hey, we'll see. If it hits at least the level of Minority Report, I'll be happy. You can't really expect miracles from Hollywood.
BTW, I heard Simmons is in talks for a potential Hyperion adaptation. Honestly, I have no clue how they even plan to pull that off 😕
