rustyangler02 said:So, did you actually go back to finish middle school after you graduated high school?...

You’ve blathered on about quite a few nonsense points here, most of which don't even warrant a response. But, I suppose there is one thing I might ask you... For instance, if you truly believe that language, as a social science, is nothing more than a byproduct of a decaying civilization, how exactly do you propose we communicate? How would you even attempt to reach an understanding with someone else?...

It looks like the logic behind my sentences is tripping you up just a little bit. No worries, though—I’ll break it down for you. And please, don't feel bad about asking if anything else seems fuzzy...

I’m taking this opportunity to ask for my brother's forgiveness. I ended up borrowing his old collection of vintage *Start* magazines—you know, those back issues where you could find all sorts of interesting illustrations, including some rather questionable shots of women... If you're reading this, Stephen, man, I am truly sorry. For an elementary school kid, stumbling upon stuff like that felt about as intense as a hungry dog spotting a butcher's shop... The only part of this text that actually connects back to my earlier rambling about philosophers and my own mental hurdles is my little brother. He used to own a whole collection of comic books and several dozen issues of Start magazine. I should probably clarify that time isn't exactly linear here; just because one paragraph follows another doesn't mean the events actually happened in that order...☕
Maybe I should try breaking things up into separate sections? Or perhaps adding some timestamps to keep everything in order? It might make it a little easier for him to follow...😁
The start takes place back in the early nineties, whereas the comic strips follow later on. Does that make more sense now...?

When I talk about language, I’m really referring to the toolset used by the "sciences" to function, rather than the science itself. It’s much the same way I view mathematics—I see it through the lens of the language used to deploy it, which is almost exclusively tied to technical and natural sciences, mostly because anything else seems to struggle to find its footing there...☕)
Beyond that, there’s the matter of language itself... Not really... Science... it’s a heavy word, isn't it? People toss it around like it's some kind of magic wand that can fix everything, but when you really sit with it and look at how we actually build our understanding of the world, things get a bit more complicated than just "facts" and "figures"...

@Daniel GarciaI’ll be the first to admit that I was a total nerd growing up... basically a straight-A student in almost everything. If there was one glaring hole in my education, it was German, but in my defense, the professor was a complete alcoholic disaster who didn't have a clue what he was doing. For some inexplicable reason, nobody ever had the guts to fire him; honestly, he’s still teaching to this day...😳 )
Please, don't even get me started on psychology...🙄 If these people actually had any competence, they would have ground through six years of medical school just to land a residency in psychiatry...🙏
The whole concept of social science "methodology" strikes me as a joke, and don't even get me started on their actual theories...🤣

The whole point is completely lost. The article was supposed to be about combat sports, plain and simple. Who actually gives a damn if the coach is an atheist, a Buddhist, a Protestant, or some guy bowing down to wooden totems? It’s irrelevant. Or maybe he’s out there snorting something ridiculous like that guy from San Francisco, thinking it's some secret shortcut to reaching a higher spiritual plane... lol...
How's it going... research-oriented... My approach? Look, I’m not really interested in all the heavy philosophical theorizing—that should have been obvious by now. The only kind of research I actually respect is this: you build your lever or whatever technique you're so proud of (I'll use ikkyo as an example), and then I'll try to shut you down. Whoever comes out on top... well, that's the winner...
It’s honestly pretty incredible how you all... Tempting... It’s like if my coach started getting all deep into some spiritual nonsense or chasing these wild, metaphysical fantasies... I guess the unspoken expectation would be that I'm supposed to just follow suit and embark on whatever "path" he thinks we should be walking together...🙄

rustyangler02 said:Why are you getting so hung up on philosophers and philosophy anyway?

🤷 Maybe it’s because most philosophy is just way too dense for my tiny, flat cerebral cortex to process, and I can never quite figure out what they're actually rambling about. Back when I was an overachieving, overly ambitious high schooler, I tried to tackle Sartre and Heidegger head-on, and honestly, my head started throbbing from the sheer mental strain of trying to digest a single chapter. Fortunately, after a few metaphorical seizures, I realized I should probably ditch that kind of "literature" and embrace things more my speed: Alan Ford, Zagora, and those novels about Leslie Eldridge that my cousin was kind enough to pass down to me. 👍 Taking this opportunity, I'd also like to ask for my cousin's forgiveness, because I borrowed his collection of old Start magazines—back when they were filled with all sorts of interesting illustrations and where you could still catch a glimpse of some hairy female anatomy. Stephen, if you're reading this, damn it, I'm sorry; for a middle schooler, stuff like that felt as vital as a freshly slaughtered dog to a fly... 🙂

To be blunt—I think philosophers are hacks. I don't consider philosophy (or the social "sciences") to be actual sciences. It’s almost an insult to the natural and technical sciences, which are the only true sciences, to group them together with these waste products of human idle speculation. ☕

So, tiger, do me a favor and read the entire text that Robin Palmer3 linked to, then tell me what you think. There isn't much of a difference between this guy (who sees a threat in "pseudoskepticism" and atheism 🙄) and that dim-witted religious fanatic (I posted a link to him in the Humor thread on BV) who believes most martial arts and sports are just stepping stones to the devil and hell. 🤣

Robin Palmer3 As stated by...
Let’s wake this forum up a little. I wanted to bring back a topic that we’ve gone over quite a few times here, but honestly, it never really gets old. Take a look at this text... and if anyone feels like diving in, feel free to drop a condensed version or just some thoughts so we can get a conversation going...
I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately thinking about the intersection of professional wrestling and political philosophy—specifically how the spectacle of the ring mirrors the grander, often absurd theater of our own social structures. It’s easy to dismiss wrestling as mere mindless entertainment, but if you look closer, there’s a profound layer of ritualized conflict that feels uncomfortably familiar. When we watch a heel dominate a hero, we aren't just watching a scripted match; we are witnessing a dramatization of power dynamics that play out in our own institutions every single day. There is a certain catharsis in seeing the "bad guy" eventually get their comeuppance, yet the reality of modern life rarely offers such tidy resolutions. In the real world, the villains often win through systemic leverage rather than a steel chair to the back of the head. It brings to mind some of the heavier existentialist ideas we've touched on before. If we consider the perspectives of Sartre or Heidegger regarding the construction of identity and the weight of existence, one could argue that the wrestler’s persona is an extreme manifestation of "being-in-the-world." They adopt a mask, a set of behaviors designed to elicit a specific reaction from the crowd, essentially performing a version of themselves that exists solely for the consumption of others. It’s a heavy concept when you realize how much of our own "performative" lives in American society mimic this exact struggle... trying to find an authentic self amidst the constant pressure to play a role for the audience. There’s also something to be said about the way authority is presented in these matches. The referee, the promoter, the governing body—they represent the rules of the game, but they are also part of the show. This creates a fascinating tension between the illusion of order and the chaotic reality of the fight itself. It’s a microcosm of how we perceive law and governance in the States; we want to believe the rules are being followed, even while we suspect the outcome was decided behind closed doors long before the bell rang...

What kind of site is this, exactly...?😕😲
The only thing he actually said was that martial arts basically split into two camps: those rooted in spirituality and those that are purely materialistic, atheistic, or just plain pseudo-skeptical...😲
Then you have these pseudo-skeptics who spend their time training stuff like MMA, Muay Thai, wrestling, or kickboxing, all while convinced they’re just engaging in some typical physical nonsense. Honestly, we should probably just introduce a specific category for people who practice combat sports and MMA, because most of them don't fall into that pseudo-skeptic camp at all. As it stands, the pseudo-skeptics tend to be mostly atheists and materialists—two groups that, frankly, aren't exactly known for being reliable sources...🙄And then, if you look further down in the text, they even go as far as to bring up that "Stalinist" influence...🤣
You have to hand it to Jack Shannon; he really knocked it out of the park with this website design... If you ever find yourself down a rabbit hole late at night, you might stumble upon scientificwrestling.com. It’s one of those corners of the internet that feels like it was built by people who take their niche interests just a little too seriously—but in the best way possible. It’s a deep dive into the mechanics and the sheer madness of the sport... a place where logic meets the chaotic energy of the ring. It's definitely worth a look if you want to see how much thought actually goes into something most people just watch casually on TV... But honestly, anyone considering enrolling really needs to be careful. You don't want to accidentally fall under the spell of his whole atheist-materialist-pseudoskeptic ideology...
The rest of the text went on to break down the whole concept of pseudoskepticism...🤣

This text is a perfect example of why an average person might view a philosopher as nothing more than a hollow windbag. It actually started off on the right foot, too... Combat sports aren't some sacred sanctuary immune to lies and propaganda... It’s easy to think that because it’s "real" fighting, everything surrounding it is somehow more honest, but that’s just not the case. You can have all the grit and sweat in the world, but if the narrative being fed to the fans is manufactured, the whole thing becomes a circus...... and then he just completely blew it. What can I even say? Philosophy, I guess...😵

Edit: I noticed there's actually some writing on this same page about evolution—specifically, why it's supposedly flawed...🤣

I was wondering what you think about him, Robin Palmer3. Is he actually sane? Or is he just such a deep-seated philosopher that we ought to give him a pass...😁

rustytinker9 said:I have heard that while the term UFC generally translates to combat sports, there is actually a specific subset—much like boxing or kickboxing—that people also simply refer to as UFC

🤣

Were you born with your head turned the wrong way?🤣

UFC is just another term for a combat skill; it doesn't mean anything else. What you're seeing on YouTube isn't actually "fighting," it's more like an acrobatic performance act. You won't find a gym that trains that specifically. The closest thing around here would probably be some veteran Taekwondo groups that do similar demonstrations🤔 They show up at exhibitions and on TV sometimes. It's similar to Capoeira too, just with less acrobatics and more rhythm.
I'm pretty sure that guy in the video has a Taekwondo background. Most of them perform those flashy moves that aren't actually useful in a real fight.🙄
Maybe check with a local Taekwondo club; one of the regulars on this forum might even get back to you. We used to have two women practicing it in our area.

Basically, UFC equals combat skills, and there are hundreds of different kinds. If they are competitive (wrestling, karate, Muay Thai, judo, boxing...), we usually just call them combat sports. There are other minor distinctions, but they don't really matter to you...☕
Dog attack on a little girl in Law ·
Grandma is solely to blame here.
My heart goes out to the kid.😢

I’m really interested in how the legal gymnastics work in cases like this. By definition, a dangerous dog is one that attacks a person or shows clear signs of aggression... but then you have the concept of a good guard dog—one that lunges at or even just aggressively barks at an intruder on "its" property. How do you reconcile those two definitions? Now, this poor dog is facing vet supervision or even potential euthanasia, while the owner deals with a lawsuit, yet by some twisted logic, neither the owner nor the dog is actually at fault. Just a reminder: a dog is often "more dangerous" when it's tethered and someone approaches it than when it's running free.

Seriously though, I want to know: how much breakage and what kind of injuries should I expect? My bones are pretty light, and I have one very cleanly healed multiple fracture of the femur from almost 15 years ago. Could that be an issue?

What do you do for a living, and for how long?

@ pacifizam - and here I am just waiting for someone to come along and tell me that BV isn't just a great way to intensely burn off energy, build conditioning, and improve motor gracefulness, but rather the union of Spirit and Body in Harmony with the Universe as we act as a Medium through which Divine Energy flows😁

🙂

😉

There aren't really breaks. Usually. "Injuries" mostly depend on how hard you push yourself and who you're rolling with. Honestly, you're more likely to get hurt by some clumsy beginner than by a seasoned practitioner. If you're training seriously, expect some bruises, scrapes, sore muscles, and general fatigue. Stuff like sprains or fractures does happen, but it's rare and usually comes down to a lapse in focus or being too exhausted to stay sharp. As for side effects—at least for me—it’s a faster metabolism and a much bigger appetite...
It might be a factor, but I don't think it'll stop you. If that bone hasn't healed properly and strengthened your thigh by now, it probably won't. Generally speaking, physical activity is actually recommended for low-density bones—it strengthens both the musculature and the skeletal structure. Drink your milk, get some sunlight once in a while, and as long as you don't have major metabolic issues or a predisposition to things like osteoporosis, you should be fine.
Don't rush out and buy those American sneakers right away, just in case you decide the style isn't for you. Better to wait a few months. You can never have too much conditioning, so feel free to work on that first.

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades (master of none lol) 😁
But from what I've experienced, my body responds best to rolling in a gi (BJJ)... shame it's not accessible to me right now...😢

I suppose there’s a certain poetic inevitability to it all, isn't there? Watching everything we built just slowly drift toward that final, inevitable sunset... It feels less like a sudden crash and more like a slow, heavy fade into the dusk. Like the end of a long summer evening where you know the chill is coming, but you just sit there on the porch anyway, watching the shadows stretch out across the lawn... Just waiting for the lights to go out. kaže:
I need some advice... I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about here, so there’s a massive chance I’ll end up making a fool of myself. I’ve been lurking for a while, trying to soak everything up, but most of the terminology is completely foreign to me. I really just need some guidance, or at least a starting point to help narrow things down. What martial art would you recommend to someone who’s looking for something entirely new after years away from sports? I want something demanding and physically taxing. Something powerful, fast... You know, like a way to blow off all that excess energy. And I don't mean just hitting a heavy bag that can't hit back or throw a punch in return...

Thanks in advance...

🤣
😍
😲It’s a bit late in the game to start chasing that lean, toned physique if you're planning on hitting the beach this summer...😛
Based on that description, you’d be a perfect fit for the KM, but they aren't even out in the Midwest... You might have better luck looking toward Chicago or maybe Seattle instead. Anyway, I'm sure you've heard of Jacob Sullivan9...😉
Small towns like Požega or Vinkovci? They have a certain charm, I suppose, if you're into that sort of thing... though they feel worlds away from the pace of life here.
There’s just no MMA, no Muay Thai, and zero Jiu-Jitsu around here...😬 I guess you could call me a ninja or an oni... if that's even a thing. It’s funny how we label people... just a little word for someone who doesn't quite fit the mold or follows a rhythm that nobody else can hear. I was thinking about that today. It’s such a simple term, but it carries so much weight when you really look at it. Most people spend their whole lives trying to avoid being seen that way, smoothing out their edges just to blend into the background of some suburban cul-de-sac or a corporate office in Chicago. They want to be predictable. They want to be safe. But there's something almost enviable about the ones who don't care to fit in... those who move through the world on their own terms, regardless of how strange it looks to everyone else... You’ve got people rolling around on the mats in heavy kimonos, and then you’ve got the rest of them in standard gear—karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, wrestling, judo... It’s quite the spectrum. Then there are those absolute clowns practicing things like katédo or sinaja... honestly, I can't even begin to go there...😂

Man, I really wish someone would just show up and start rambling about cosmic oneness, pacifism, and universal love for once...🙄

Hannah Bailey5 said:The fight between Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg is set for August 15th. Honestly, Gina seems more suited for walking a runway than stepping into the cage; she doesn't look like she’s even within 2% of being a real contender in an actual fight. Apparently, Gina's management turned down a bout a few months back because they claimed Cris was too heavy. Now, they've conditioned this August matchup on Cris not exceeding 145 pounds. Since Cris was sitting around 147 or 148 lbs and carries almost pure muscle, hitting that weight requirement isn't going to be a walk in the park...

However, when the conversation shifts toward Gina, people start acting differently. This fight probably won't end like that staged clip Cris released; instead, it'll likely go down the way Cris usually handles business—just a relentless barrage of heavy strikes to the head until the opponent has no choice but to submit.

And then there are the men. It's as if we're judging a beauty pageant where physical appearance is the only metric that matters for women, regardless of the sport. In that specific regard, Gina has the edge, and as a woman, I'll begrudgingly concede that point...

I think we’ve already gone over this, and I'll admit I was one of the "chauvinists" in that debate. I don't even consider these testosterone-fueled powerhouses to be "real" women. If we want to be politically correct about it, maybe we should just create a separate category for these half-men. Comparing them to someone like Martina Navratilova, who is statistically the greatest female tennis player ever, is a stretch.🙄 Put Pete Sampras in her place and you'll see he wouldn't even break a sweat against her competition...🙄

I watched that clip of Gina. I don't know. She's good, sure. But those strikes of hers...🤷 they just lack "pop." They look superficial. I know she hits hard, but the technique looks off. What's the issue here?😕
The stats claim a 650 lb punch, 400 lbs with the elbow (!!!???😕), 550 with the knee (!!!???), and 800 with the kick. Yet, that gelatinous model doesn't even budge, and the heavy bag barely reacts. I don't get how the knee and elbow strikes can be that weak compared to the hands and feet...🤷

Stupid Americans, someone please tell them to just adopt the metric system. What the hell is a pound anyway?

Hold on a second... are you actually suggesting that women are better fighters than men? It’s an interesting take, I guess. It reminds me of how male stylists often seem to be more creative than their female counterparts, or how you see more men dominating in professional kitchens, behind the wheel of a race car, or even in surgery... it makes you wonder where the line is drawn...

silentfalcon9 said:I don't want to derail this thread too much, but I figured I’d pop in here under the MMA topic to ask a few things about training.

Basically, I’m looking to get back into some kind of shape and actually pick up some technique—you know, hand strikes, kicks, grappling, all that. Initially, I was thinking about Sambo or maybe Combat Sambo, but since we don't really have that here in the States, someone suggested I just go straight into MMA.

Since my goal isn't exactly to go out there and beat people up in competitions—and considering I haven't done any martial arts before and I'm "already" 26—I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to train more recreationally? Like, what would the sparring situation look like for someone in my position?

There's a gym near the University of Washington area in Seattle, if I'm remembering correctly, so if anyone has experience training around there, I'd love to hear it.

That's all for now.

She’s unattractive, she lacks any sense, and her temper is completely out of control. She’d fit right in working some rural farm in the Midwest, maybe clearing out some overgrown vineyards👍 She’d probably snap a hoe in half within a week🤣 But honestly, she could probably till through twenty acres without breaking a sweat🙏

But seriously, what was she even doing?🤷 Just lost her mind a little bit😕 Intentionally choking out a reporter is one thing, but there's a line between demonstrating technique and just going for the kill. I'm just glad she isn't planning on ending the fight with some nasty neck crank, a hip lock, or a heel hook. Otherwise, that journalist would have been in real trouble.
