It’s more about the browser itself—you know, when someone loads a massive thread full of high-res photos for the very first time? If they're browsing on a smartphone, things might get a little sluggish. Maybe we could consider approving specific threads where images are the main attraction and allow larger dimensions there, while keeping everything else on the rest of the site at a standard 640x480.

The comment was basically saying that people don't really care about how heavy the image files are. Honestly, if you look at PC gaming, where everyone is constantly demanding these massive, high-res textures that take up gigabytes, we can definitely expect the same kind of thing here on Reddit. That said, if you decide to allow higher resolutions—which, personally, I’m fine with since I’m long past the era of using a tiny 14" CRT monitor—you should probably prepare for a lot more huge files hitting the threads.

However, if you use an IMG tag, even if your browser manages to render it, it’s still going to drag things down. Like I said, if you try to shove a massive 10 MB photo through an IMG tag, you're definitely going to notice a lag while that 10 MB loads, at least until it hits your cache.
I doubt most people will actually do it, but there are plenty of unoptimized animated GIFs floating around out there being used by idiots.

rustydrifter10 said:Could you guys please stop uploading such massive images? The ones posted so far have served their purpose as examples, so we really don't need any more of them.
Since our server is already struggling quite a bit, I think it's best if we don't overload it more than we absolutely have to. I'm really not sure that going with larger files would be a smart move, and honestly, a 640*480 resolution is perfectly fine for what we need here.

They even handed out moderator bonuses for all the banning and deleting we've been doing. 👍

Brian Edwards6 said:Everything gets penalized selectively—both of those things, plus everything else depending on a million factors—so I was just trying to look at it from a different angle.👍
