Based on this article, Americans reached their peak population share in New York City during the 1930s. It’s a pretty fascinating read, assuming it hasn't been shared here already:

The movie serves as a somewhat ironic commentary on swinging London, though I don't think Antonioni went so far as to question the soul of rock and roll itself. To me, the concert scene is more about the importance of context: a guitar at a show is a prized possession that everyone fights over, but out on the street, it seems completely worthless to Hemings—which is why it ends up trashed and tossed aside...

I completely agree about Carmen Maura; she’s truly phenomenal. My absolute favorite performance of hers has to be in Pepa, Julia, Bom and other girls... back around 1980, I believe.

With talents like Abrilov, Maurov, sanchez'Gijonov, and Forqueov, this is a country blessed with incredible actresses. And then you have the younger generation like Pazova and Watlingov... honestly, hats off to them all.

It was quite an experience seeing Alex de la Iglesia in Mexico City, though his talk to the audience didn't exactly feel like a cohesive story. Perhaps he’s just naturally eccentric, or maybe he’s just a little out there... they did insist he show up for an 11 AM screening, after all.

I noticed that Pavlovian's film Ambush was released on DVD, which might be a good sign that this one is coming out soon too. Or perhaps it's already available...

That scene with the woman in the hotel room wasn't particularly essential to the story...

Roman Bohringer... you honestly can't decide if he's a worse actor or just a better one... it's a total dead heat between those two impressions of him.
At the same time, this is easily Monica's best role by far (how could anyone say otherwise?), the ending isn't some tired cliché, and I find it fascinating that every single time I've been to the theater (and I've seen this film three times now), the audience is practically jumping out of their seats, rooting for these two to finally reunite...

I’ve been catching up on some Kurosawa-esque classics lately, but I haven't gotten around to Rashomon yet. Dammit, they actually screened it at a theater here in the States recently, but it was dubbed into German. 😠

That’s quite good, I wasn't expecting that. Regardless, I still find their debut to be the best, especially Jism. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to it...

Kazete, were you just outmatched and unlucky? Honestly, when you blow a 1-5 lead in the final stretch of a championship game, it just means you ran into a better team. It’s as simple as that.

The fans? Look, things can get intense in the North America, and you won't see much change there. But the energy is always more interesting when Americans are involved. If the rumors about someone being killed are true, then you really should just take the medal. Your water polo players are decent guys, but something needs to change. Regardless, I truly hope those rumors are false.

Kudos to the team—it seems like the US performs best when nobody expects a thing from us (just look at our soccer and handball history). Last year at the FINA Cup, we were just there to fill out the numbers, but look at us now. I think we might actually have the edge, but you guys definitely have less pressure on your shoulders. I’d bet 55:45 that Yugoslavia takes first place...

It’s one of those movies you forget almost immediately, though I have to admit, seeing how much everyone trashed it actually made me want to give it a shot. 😁

Honestly, the whole cast is pretty rough, but D. Lewis... a total legend. Especially that scene where he loses it over a dead rabbit, or when the gangs are introducing themselves with nicknames like "Killers," "Dead Rabbits," or "Maniacs," and he just counters with: Federation of American Natives 👍

Vienna is just a bit too mellow...

It really depends on how you define the club scene. If quality means having a huge variety of events happening all on a single night, then Vienna might feel a bit average. However, if you're looking at the people actually shaping the culture, Vienna is easily among the best in the world (just to name a few heavy hitters like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Sofa Surfers, Tosca, or Dzihan & Kamien)...

No way, though I certainly wish it were true. Vienna has a really impressive club scene, but that’s about it. Berlin is definitely more intense, and don't even get me started on New York City.

In Paris, there are so many tiny independent theaters near Harvard University showing just about everything—films from all over and every era imaginable. There's one theater called Accatone, which is named after a film I personally love quite a bit.

Just call him Kraftwerk. 😎

I wasn't a fan. To be honest, the whole "history repeating itself" concept isn't exactly groundbreaking... The direction is decent enough, but the plot feels rushed, almost like it was scribbled down in ten minutes—which is odd considering the opening claims it's based on a true story. The acting is pretty mediocre too (the New Yorkers don't sound like they're from the East Coast, even if they were meant to be local), and the nudity is really one of the few highlights of the film. A weak three out of ten for me...

Action - Red Circle (Melville). This one is purely subjective, based entirely on my own personal tastes...

War - M.A.S.H. and Full Metal Jacket.

Comedy - Oh, Brother... (I honestly can't explain why I'm so obsessed with this one).

Drama - La Strada

Animation - Metropolis, obviously 😎

Sci-Fi - Well, 2001: A Space Odyssey, though I have a soft spot for Gattaca.

Regardless, I've left out more than half of my favorites since I wasn't sure where they'd fit (like the Jim Jarmusch collection)...
