Vitamin C in Hobbies & Leisure ·
Benjamin Brown3 said:Are effervescent tablets actually better than the regular ones? And what's the damage on price?

Man, those fizzy ones will cost you an arm and a leg $10 just for a 20-pack (20g).
If you grab the powder version through D.C., it's just powder—and honestly, if you don't mind the taste, it's a way cheaper way to go.

Whenever you're picking out effervescent, standard, or whatever else, you really gotta check the vitamin C content. Some of them have a full 1g of vitamin C in there—that's the sweet spot you want to aim for. I mean, don't waste your money on those cheap little tricks that only have like 60mg.
Just get the powder and mix it up! 😁

Benjamin Brown3 said:Does anyone know how much a container of vitamin C goes for at local pharmacies?

Or maybe you guys have some other brands you swear by?

At CVS, a 100g tub is usually around $20 or so.

Here’s the idea and the background info.
So, I actually got a DM once asking—what am I wearing? It wasn't really the typical PULS method approach, but hey, whatever, it doesn't matter much.
Anyway, these are the pants I was rocking right at that moment—

I snapped this during class while I was just messing around on my phone and chilling, waiting to see how they felt out in the real world.

Dennis Lewis6 said:I mean, honestly? I just go with the glucose-free version and grab a Milka bar on the side. It’s kind of my thing, I guess!😁

I mean, let's be real—stuff like Milka and all those other sugary treats? They are honestly loaded with fat. Like, seriously loaded. I guess it's just one of those things you have to watch out for if you're trying to stay on track, you know? Maybe it's worth keeping an eye on if you're snacking!

So, after you wrap up a workout, you’re probably just craving something super straightforward, right? Like, I'm talking simple carbs—just some easy UH—and some basic, uncomplicated protein to get things moving. Nothing fancy, just the essentials!

I’m right there with you, I can't stand that taste either.
Just mixing plain protein with water is honestly my absolute favorite compared to all that stuff with 100g of glucose. 😁
But hey, I guess it is what it is.

Lawrence Phillips said:Wait, so you're telling me there's like a hundred grams of sugar in just a 30g serving of protein powder? Isn't that a bit much?🤷

Well, if you think that's too much, maybe just go for 40g of protein instead. 😁

Honestly, 100g of carbs isn't even that crazy high. I mean, really.
That's basically just a large glass of fruit juice.

Lawrence Phillips said:Hey, can I ask here how much grape sugar I should mix into my protein shake for a post-workout boost?

So, like, 30 grams of protein powder in about 8 ounces of milk plus... how many grams of grape sugar? I guess?

Thanks!

Well, honestly, you see all kinds of people—some folks only take about 50 or 60g, while others go as high as 120g.
It really just depends on whether you're trying to bulk up or if you're cutting down for definition.
Most people usually just stick to water for their post-workout shake.

If I had to guess, I'd say aim closer to that higher end; maybe around 100g would be just right for you.

I think it would be awesome if everyone could share their absolute favorite high-quality websites—and maybe explain why they actually worked for you and how they helped you level up. The whole idea is just to help anyone out there who really wants to train hard and do it right. Healthy body, healthy mind, right? Whether it’s guys or girls looking to tone up or lose weight, building strength, adding mass, endurance, explosiveness, agility, yoga (without the meditation part!), actual meditation (like for sports focus, maybe when diving or something?), motorsports prep, cycling... or even shooting sports... whatever! Basically, if you're into anything at all, please drop your go-to, top-tier website here.

A couple I already mentioned—
www.exrx.net
www.t-nation.com (especially the older articles)
plus some classic fitness forums.

Exrx is great because it's basically a massive library of every exercise ever,
T-Nation is awesome because the articles are just so high quality,
and those fitness forums are good because you find people who actually know what they're talking about.

Man, this whole topic just sparked an idea for an even better workaround.
It’s actually happened to me a few times where I totally ran out of glucose. I remember there was that one big shortage last year, too.
The thing is, my brain just wasn't firing on all cylinders in the morning without it. 😁

If you ever find yourself stuck without any pure glucose, honestly, the best move is just to grab some juice—like any of those fruit juices, maybe a Cappy, a Juicy, a Fis, or whatever else you can find at the store.

About 90% of those drinks have over 10g of pure glucose syrup per 100mL. Plus, you can always just double-check the nutrition label to see the exact amount.
Just grab something like that and you should be good to go.

Jesse Martinez23 said:So, I was planning on hitting the gym yesterday, but the place was closed, so I just decided to grind out some sets at home instead. I did some stuff a buddy from college suggested, plus some old favorites from Men's Health, but man, I totally ran out of glucose, so I couldn't even do my protein shake. Right now I'm hanging out in Napa, and the two CVS locations around here are doing inventory, so they're basically closed all week... which sucks because I have nothing to do except study and train. Does anyone have recommendations for quick carbs besides raisins? Like, what else can I use for fast carbs? I'm really trying to bulk up, and it feels kind of pointless to lift if I can't get a shake in right after the workout.

I'd say just check the nutrition labels for stuff with a high glycemic index. Just pick whatever works best for you.
Maybe some cornflakes—either the frosted ones or just regular—would be your easiest bet.

Jesse Martinez23 said:Hey there!
So, okay, I've been thinking, and there are just a couple—maybe two or three things—that I'm really curious about...
I was hoping I could get some advice from Steve—I mean, looking at his posts, he seems to have a much broader grasp of all these little details than anyone else around here. No offense to the rest of you, I guess, I just haven't really noticed anyone else's comments as much!
I was wondering... just curious, really... how much of an impact does whey actually have—you know, both good and bad—when you're dealing with the flu? Like, if I'm taking it alongside all those other supplements to try and kick this winter demon out of my system, does it actually help or just get in the way? Maybe it helps with recovery, or maybe it's just extra work for the body? I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth it while I'm feeling this crappy!
So, I’ve been stuck in this weird cycle with this cold for like two weeks now... just totally dragging. Some days the fever hits me out of nowhere and I feel like absolute garbage, but honestly? I went ahead and hit the gym anyway. I figured, hey, maybe a workout will help? And for a second there, I actually felt better! But then, after just two days of chilling out and trying to recover, everything just crashed again. It's like I'm right back at square one. I guess I'm wondering... is that because I tried to mix working out while sick? Or is my immune system just completely trashed right now? Maybe it's just pure exhaustion catching up to me. I don't know, it's hard to tell!

When you're dealing with the flu, I guess there are really just two main things you need to keep in mind.
I mean, at the end of the day, it really just comes down to the fact that everyone's body reacts a little differently, you know? It’s all very individual. I guess what I’m trying to say is that you just have to listen to your own body and see what works for you!
So, my second point is that the flu itself is just a massive stressor on your body. I mean, it’s basically the same thing as a heavy training session or any other major physical strain—that's why your cortisol levels spike when you're hitting the gym, right? It's all about that physiological stress.

So, what does this whole second thing actually mean for us? I mean, I guess we're all just sitting here wondering, right? Maybe it's a big deal, maybe it isn't... who knows! But seriously, what's the actual impact on our situation?
I mean, honestly, a healthy body actually reacts pretty positively to a certain amount of stress, right? It’s almost like... I don't know, maybe it's just prepping itself? Like, it kind of readies itself so it's way more prepared for whatever comes next down the road. It makes sense, I guess!
That’s why you can just keep pushing yourself further and further with every single workout session! It’s all about that gradual progression, I guess. And honestly, even your stress levels have to be managed—like, they have to be carefully dosed. I mean, it’s pretty obvious when you look at it, right? Like, nobody is out there trying to pull a 25x1RM deadlift with only 30-second breaks between sets... seriously, that wouldn't make any sense at all!

Look, I mean, if you’re constantly pushing yourself to the limit without actually giving your body any downtime... and if you aren't really paying attention to your own internal rhythm? Like, seriously, just try training hard while barely getting any sleep for five days straight, and I bet you'll feel it by day five. Your body is basically going to scream at you to stop! It’ll demand rest—think along the lines of overtraining syndrome—and honestly, your performance is just going to tank. It's like, you can't ignore it forever, I guess.

Man, being sick with the flu already puts a massive amount of stress on your system; I mean, it’s just a lot to handle. If you decide to push through and hit the gym while you're feeling like garbage—though, honestly, I'm not even sure if you *should* be training at all when you have the flu—you might just cross that line. You know, that point where you move past "good" stress and straight into territory where working out becomes totally pointless. It’s risky, too. I guess you're looking at a much higher chance of getting injured, or maybe you'll just end up putting in all that effort only to realize the workout didn't actually do anything for you. Just my two cents!

Oh, and obviously, I'm not even counting common colds in that at all... I mean, those don't really count! 😁
I honestly think this is such a perfect example of how you can just tune in to what your body is telling you and nail a workout regardless of the circumstances. I mean, maybe if you feel like you’re hitting a wall or getting tired a bit faster than usual, you could always dial it back a notch... but otherwise, you can pretty much just power through without any issues at all!
Look, if the flu has you absolutely pinned to your bed, I honestly think every single lift is going to feel twice as heavy as usual. You know? Like, everything just feels like extra work. I mean, sure, you could try to do something a bit lighter just to stay moving—and staying active is always a good idea, I guess—but you really have to listen to your body. If it's telling you it needs to sleep, then just let it happen. Just brew up some tea, load up on Vitamin C, and just... rest. It's probably for the best!

When it comes to protein, honestly? Just keep drinking it! Don't even worry about it, and definitely don't let having the flu stop you. You're good to go!

I’ve been wondering lately—just how much damage can protein actually do? I mean, we all know it's basically essential, especially that powder stuff you grab right after hitting the gym because it absorbs so fast, but I'm getting a bit worried about the impact on your liver and kidneys. A neighbor of my aunt's went in for a checkup recently, and get this—his liver looked just like an alcoholic's, all because of his protein intake. Now, I honestly have no clue how many grams he was slamming a day, but regardless of the amount, it really makes you think, doesn't it?

I mean, honestly, you’re already getting plenty of protein from your actual food anyway! I guess it just kind of makes you think about it, right? Maybe we don't even need all those extra supplements if our diet is on point. Just a thought!
Honestly, if you’re a healthy person, those protein powders you pick up? They aren't going to mess with your liver or your kidneys at all. I mean, I guess that applies to like 99% of people out there, anyway!

Is there like, a specific time when you should just stop taking protein for a bit?

Just while you're sleeping, I guess... 😁

...
I'm wondering about the same thing with protein? Because I'm getting a little skeptical, honestly, since people say totally different things about it—some say yes, some say no, and I don't even know where to look for advice anymore. I actually asked two nutritionists, and they didn't have any issues with it if the goal is quick mass gain, especially if we can't quite hit our targets through regular food alone, but then on the other hand, they're kind of hesitant about it too.

You can, obviously, notice that if you're already hitting 150g of protein in your diet, you could reach a target of, say, 200g just by adding an extra 10 ounces of chicken.
So, it's not like they're strictly necessary.

Also, I always think it's worth checking any info you hear against a few other sources to see if it actually makes sense and how it fits with what you already know about nutrition.

I remember once, one of our most "highly regarded" nutritionists told me, "Why are you drinking whey? That stuff is for women..."
She'll probably list a bunch of reasons, for sure. It's not like you shouldn't listen to anyone at all.
But that comment was something else! She didn't even ask if I liked it, or why I was using it, or why specifically whey—nothing! She just said it was "for women" and that I needed something "stronger"... which, coincidentally, was exactly what she was selling... so I was just like, yeah, I'm sticking with my whey, and I'll always have plenty in stock, so those ladies can come talk to me whenever they need some... 😁

Hey everyone! So, I was just sitting here thinking about everything, and I really wanted to jump in and share some thoughts. I guess I've been looking into this stuff quite a bit lately, maybe even more than I should, haha! But seriously, there’s just so much to talk about, right? I mean, I don't know if you guys feel the same way, but I find myself constantly weighing all these different options and wondering which path is actually the best one to take. It's kind of overwhelming sometimes, I guess! Anyway, I just felt like reaching out and getting a conversation going. What do you all think? I'd love to hear your takes on this! kaže:
I mean, okay, I'll admit it—I messed up! Even in German, you still just say "protein"... so yeah, my bad! 🙈 *grabs a French dictionary* 😁

It’s more like a lexicon... or maybe just a collection of words, I guess! 😁

Hey! So, I was just thinking about everything... you know? It's kind of wild how much things change when you start looking closer at the details. I guess I've been obsessing over this lately, maybe a little too much, haha! But seriously, there's just so much to unpack here. I mean, if you think about it, it’s almost like... well, I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it feels like we're constantly reinventing the wheel, right? Anyway, I'm just rambling now! Just wanted to share those random thoughts while they were bouncing around in my head. Hope you guys are having an awesome day! kaže:
You're totally right, I actually went and checked the dictionary! I mean, I do know German, but clearly, those technical chemistry and medical terms just aren't in my vocabulary. My bad! 😁

Wait, hold on... what was that? I think I missed something!
So, you’re hanging out at the gym, acting like a total pro, but then you open your mouth and realize you don't even know how to say the word "protein" in three different languages? I mean, wow. Just... wow. 😁

It’s really not a huge thing.
Just shake it up right when you start your workout, and it should settle down by the end.

Dennis Lewis6 said:just wondering about something... does the expiration date on the protein tub apply only if it’s still sealed, or does it count once you’ve opened it? I've got an open tub sitting here that I totally forgot about...

Well, once you crack that seal, it starts degrading faster, pretty much like any other food item you'd find at a grocery store.
But honestly, I don't think you need to lose sleep over it when it comes to protein. Especially if they were all sealed up tight before.

And hey, if you aren't going to drink it, just post on the fitness forums. There are always plenty of guys looking to grab some cheap supplements if they think it'll help them bulk up.😁
