Mirko is the GOAT, but... in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Laura Lewis5 said:Silva put on some serious weight right before the Grand Prix, and then Mike slimmed down, which ended up slowing down an already fast Silva... and honestly, it worked out perfectly for Mike.

I don't know, that just feels a little weird and suspicious to me!

Wait, what do you mean by "suspicious"?

As for Wing Chun, I guess I just don't get how some grandmaster can ignore anti-grappling or whatever else if that's supposed to be part of being a true expert in the art.

The answer is actually pretty simple, I think.

It's because that stuff just isn't part of the skill set they're mastering, and frankly, it doesn't really serve a purpose for them anyway.

Maybe try looking up some videos on "anti-grappling" and then, you know, go ask an actual grappler what they think about it.

Justin Adams5 said:Sorry, old friend, but you're way off base here. I don't really get it. You come looking for advice from people who actually know their stuff, but then you act like you've already got it all figured out. You say you're impressed by Chinese martial arts, but honestly, it seems like you don't know the first thing about them at all.👎

He’s clearly just trolling, and you guys are totally falling for it. 😁

Such awesome news!....

It’s such a relief that we don't have to mess around with those old iTunes feeds on the internet anymore... 😁

What do you guys think of this guy? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Jonathan Johnson67 said:So, how can you actually learn some decent Wing Chun then?

Honestly? You can't.
It just doesn't exist.
It’s basically just a sales pitch people use to peddle it around here.

I mean, think about it—isn't it kind of weird that you've been hearing these fairy tales for months now, yet you haven't seen or heard anything remotely concrete?
You probably won't.

If we're talking about Wing Chun, the absolute best anyone from that so-called "real" industry has ever shown is just your typical video for those bad fantasy martial arts—you know, some older Asian guy in a white gi doing some move that looks like a useless kata, just against a "live" sparring partner.

"Seriously, go ahead and tell some guy in a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class that this all started from Judo—since Helio learned directly from Judo practitioners—and I bet he'll take your head off right then and there..."

I mean, I've seen people bring that up plenty of times, and honestly, there’s never really been much of a debate about it.

When it comes to technique, though, that finger-to-the-throat move can actually hurt quite a bit if someone has really strong fingers
The rest of it just doesn't seem all that effective to me, I guess

I recognize George, since he used to compete at the US Open back in '93.
As for Zachary, I have no clue.

Look, since I know how rock-solid those Scherkels' fingers are, and I definitely know where those strikes land, I don't find this nearly as funny as everyone else does.

I mean, first off, it’s like when you bang your elbow on a desk and get that weird electric shock running straight down to your pinky—it's just biology. Second, there's just hitting someone in the groin—that’s not some high-level skill, it’s just... well, it's hitting them in the groin. And third, just punching someone in the nose or the cheekbone area. There’s really no mystery there, honestly.

He’ll probably be the first one to tell you there are way more efficient ways to do things... but since the whole point of the article was Kyusho Jutsu, he demonstrated that.

Wait, isn't that George and Zack in the photos? Which year was that issue from again?

Who are George and Zack?

Is the World Cup just carnival nationalism? in Psychology ·
Olivia Martinez20 said:On this other forum, someone was posting about how—for them, at least—the core feelings that drive people to cheer for their national team are basically the exact same things that fuel war. Like, perceiving yourself as part of an "us" based on national identity automatically creates an "them." And those are the "enemies." Building an identity around a nation and collectivism is such a powerful force behind warfare.

Do you guys agree with that? The winners and losers, the conflict, the strategy, the morale-boosting songs, the grouping up, massive groups clashing on a field, waving flags, wearing national symbols on your body or everywhere around you, collectivism... honestly, all of these are characteristics found in both war and the Communist Party.

How many common ground points actually exist between war and the Communist Party? And is the Communist Party just a convenient platform for letting nationalism run wild? It’s definitely more socially acceptable than actual war since there's less sacrifice involved—though, well, don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of pain (just look at Mostar).

I thought about putting this under Politics, but I have a feeling we might get a much better discussion going on here.

Yeah, what you're saying is totally true, it's pretty simple, and honestly, it's kind of obvious.

"Belonging" is just super high up there on the scale of human motivations and needs.

Feeling like you belong to a nation is a huge motivator. And I guess it naturally brings along everything you mentioned.

Yeah, we’re scouting for a gym that works for the summer too, mostly because the pavilion over at the flea market is going to be closed off. I’m not totally sure yet if there’s going to be some kind of break in the schedule, though.

The local youth soccer club is actually going to keep training through the summer, but I guess we’ll eventually switch from having two sessions a day down to just one single slot.
