Amy Gray52 said:Is there any way to select a column in an Excel sheet (filled with numbers—specifically seniority data) and just bump all those numbers up by one (or whatever amount)?

Try using a VBA macro that you can run manually whenever you need to bump specific cells on a given Sheet by a certain number.
You could even create a Button to trigger the macro. Just a heads-up: buttons are risky because if you misclick, there's no UNDO once a macro runs. But hey, I'll give you a second macro to subtract the same amount. For the subtraction version, just swap out the math operator in this code:
Code:
Sub plus()
EnableCancelKey = xlDisabled Application
ScreenUpdating = False Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A1") = Sheet1.Range("A1").Value + 1 Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A2") = Sheet1.Range("A2").Value + 1 Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A3") = Sheet1.Range("A3").Value + 1 Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A4") = Sheet1.Range("A4").Value + 1 Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A5") = Sheet1.Range("A5").Value + 1 Sheet1
Sheet1.Range("A6") = Sheet1.Range("A6").Value + 1 Sheet1
End Sub

First thing, try disabling macros in Word

So, I spent an absolute eternity grinding away, building out these massive tables and hammering in formulas... and then, boom. Everything's gone. Complications. Done... just one click and it moves only the item name and price over to the other Sheet you pick (not everything).

Look, I don't know why you're making this such a huge ordeal, but seriously—just go watch some Excel tutorials on copying and pasting. Find something that actually fits what you're struggling with and just use it.

- Double-clicking a cell to copy stuff down? Yeah, it works, but let's be real—it’s a lifesaver.
- Copying stuff with the Advanced Filter.
- Copying selected cells.
- Copying non-adjacent cells.
Grace Morris4 said:How do I pull this off without using tabs? I want the equation dead center and then that number sitting way over on the right in parentheses.

How do I number pages using Roman numerals like i, ii, iii, and then switch to regular numbers like 1, 2, 3 in the same file?

Check the tutorial and instructions for that first issue.

- Inserting equations in Word.
- Numbering equations in Word. Even if there are more options out there.

For the second issue, just use sections and pick whatever numbering style you want.

- Page number format.
- Multi-section numbering.
Taylor Patel2 said:basically, I just want to format an Excel cell so when I type 1701 and hit enter, I get a date like 01/17/12 (or 01/17/2012, whatever) and then just keep cranking through dates fast.

Just use Date formatting but if you're trying to fly through entries, just type them as 1/17 or 1/17/24 or 1/17/24
Rachel Moore19 said:Hey, what's up. Just finished grinding through this spreadsheet for tracking home expenses—incoming and outgoing bills. Man, that was a total nightmare. It kicked my ass. Anyway, here’s a quick look at my attempt at setting it all up.🙂Is there ANY way to get my data back? This is an absolute emergency. PLEASE help me out!🙂

Scan the whole drive for hidden files.
Like, Excel ~$filename.xlsx, or if you're rocking Excel 2003, it’s more like ~filename.xls or ~filename.tmp—something like that.
If you're running Total Commander, just throw in ~* when you're searching. It'll sniff out everything hidden that starts with a tilde. Simple as that.

Of course, all of this only matters if you actually have auto-recovery turned on.

I've got this template where I need the computer to auto-fill the timestamp in two different spots. ...The headache is when I try to print it; the software just lumps both timestamps together into one box (which is definitely not what I want). So, where am I messing up? What's the fix?

Check these out, maybe they'll help you out.

- Auto-timestamping data entry
- Remember TODAY

btw: merging cells is usually a bad move for specific layouts, if I'm following you right.
Robert Green93 said:Microsoft Office keeps auto-correcting my words on its own.
Like, I'll type "goodness" and it flips it to "goodaga" or some other nonsense. Tons of examples just like that. How do I kill this feature?

Look for the option "Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker" and try toggling that off.
Or "Replace text as you type"
File => Proofing => AutoCorrect => ....

Ever thought about just using those adhesive labels? Honestly, sticking them on an envelope feels way easier. If you're interested, check out these tutorials:

Walter Jackson48 said:Maybe I missed something, but what actually happens when you type "NO" into A1?

@Walter Jackson48/">@@Walter Jackson48, this might be exactly what he’s looking for.
It’s always like this—trying to help someone when they won't even bother making a quick sample file and uploading it so we can actually see what they need. peace.
Angela Ramirez4 said:If I put "yes" in a column, how can I make this invoice located in the range G1:H20 show up on my other sheet?

Just use an simple IF function over on Sheet2.

So, say your data source is Sheet1 G1:H20, and you want it to pull through to Sheet2. Let's say you've got a "YES" or "NO" condition sitting in A1.
You want those results to pop up in B1:C20 based on whatever is in A1.
The formula for B1 => =IF($A$1="YES",Sheet1!G1,"")—then just drag that down to B20.
For C1, use => =IF($A$1="YES",Sheet1!H1,"") and drag it down to C20.

Kimberly Anderson82 said:I get the theory behind it 😁 haha, you know, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, then Insert - References - Index and Tables, and all that. But when I actually try it? It looks like total garbage.

Don't stress too much—it'd be a shame to tank your degree over this. You'll eventually be one of those "college grads" anyway, and the job market will just have one more person to deal with. If you know how it works on paper, just keep messing with it until it sticks. Btw: check out this step-by-step guide

hollowskipper11 said:So, if those dates are actually:
October 1st, 2012 and
September 25th, 2012,
meaning they're set in month/day/year format, then this is the formula you need.

Hey man,

I don't think the dates are even in that format based on what > wrote above. Like, the dates themselves are fine, but in the text he's pulling from the web, the month is just one or two digits.

So basically, he's got (if I'm reading this right)
M/D/YYYY + rest of the timestamp
M/DD/YYYY + rest of the timestamp
MM/D/YYYY + rest of the timestamp
MM/DD/YYYY + rest of the timestamp

We can definitely convert that to DD/MM/YYYY format
But personally, this formula isn't quite hitting the mark for me (haven't had much time to dig into it though)

I'd just handle it with 3 helper columns and a date display formula (dates have always been a pain for me 🙂

Attached a screenshot here

EDIT:
Just noticed the time part after looking closer at the formula—you were basing it on a clean date without the extra text. Didn't realize immediately that > stripped out the timestamp, so now it's just looking at a plain date 🙂
my bad for not catching that sooner
Timothy Howard2 said:Does anyone know where in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 I can find the setting to stop it from auto-capitalizing the first word after I hit Enter for a new line in an email?

Seriously? Who actually wants to start sentences with lowercase letters?
Anyway, here's how you fix it:

- Click on New message
- Hit the Office button => Editor options => Proofing
- Go to AutoCorrect Options
- Uncheck "Capitalize first letter of sentences"
- Hit OK
