While you're grabbing a coffee, maybe shoot this over to someone running Word on macOS and have them screen-record it using the PC version of Word.

And while your coffee's getting cold, check these links out—might help you out. LINK1 and LINK2
Taylor Campbell4 said:So I've got one Cell with the =TODAY() formula and another Cell where the text looks like this: "5/10/2012 5:12:00 PM"
How do I make it recognize today's date within that text string?

Seems like you're having a hard time just Googling it or actually clicking the tutorial links I already dropped above—not to mention the uploading examples you're doing :-(

Whatever, won't beat you up too much about it.

The issue is that the expression provided is in TXT format.

Code:
9/10/2012 5:12:00 PM

Let's say that text/date is sitting in A1
Use the MID function nested inside the DATE function. Pay close attention to the MID function arguments.

So, put this formula in B1:

Code:
=DATE(MID(A1;6;4);MID(A1;1;1);MID(A1;3;2))

Drag that formula down to the last row.
Next, select everything from B1:?? and use Conditional formatting 2007 or Conditional Formatting 2003 to apply this formula:
Code:
=B1=TODAY()

How do I sort this in Excel so they group by month instead of year?

When you're dealing with sorting data, there's another way to handle it using the TEXT function. Just pop this formula into column C
=TEXT(B2,"m") (assuming you have headers) and drag it down. It'll pull just the month number out of the date. Then just sort by column C.

You should've dropped an example for... Get it. Download it. Now. Let's see... might make things easier for you if we take a look. Absolute addresses. She nailed it, and Walter Jackson48 cleared that right up.

Also, about the chapter numbering—they’re currently set up by levels, but I was wondering if there's an automatic way to number everything all at once.

Check out the tutorial for batch centering images. There's a link for centering text in a Word document; just try tweaking that for what you need. As for the numbering, check that link @cilim dropped in the post above.

Christian Adams79 said:Hey,

Anyone know how to strip out duplicates in Excel when you've got multiple selections going? Like this:

..............
I'm staring at a table with 10,000 rows split into about 2,000 different groups. Man, clicking "remove duplicates" for every single group is killing me.

Michael Kelly11 said:Got some text in Word but all my accented characters are missing. Any tricks to get the program to auto-fix them?

Building on what everyone else said, just lean on the built-in tools in Word

- Find/Replace
- VBA Macro Find/Replace
- Find/Replace using special characters (you can do a lot here, like targeting specific word fragments and stuff)
restlesstiger102 said:Walter Jackson48, thanks. The mistake was exactly at step 6. Thanks for pointing out that the cursor needs to be inside the header or footer. I totally missed that, so obviously that's why it wasn't working.

Can't believe that was the issue. 😢
To actually see "Link to Previous" on the document itself, you have to click into the Header or Footer to activate it, or enable it via the menu—which is clearly shown in the tutorial screenshots provided.

Fine, I'll go ahead and add that to steps 5 and 6 if the tutorial is confusing people.

Number 2. Every time I try to do the numbering on that site, it’s a total disaster. It’s not just me, either—others are hitting the same wall. I can't find where I'm messing up because I'm following the instructions to a T.

Probably best if I don't jump back into this mess. Like you said, gotta actually read with some comprehension first.
So you’re saying it never works out for you, but then in the post right below, you claim you actually pulled it off once???

The guys already filled me in, so I don't think I need to go over this again.

Number 1. First 4 pages don't have page numbers.
Yo, page 2—the fifth page of the doc—needs to start numbering at 5, not 1. Fix it.

If things just aren't clicking, Try splitting it into two separate sections. Take the numbering out of the first one, then turn it back on for the second one—but make it start at 5.
restlesstiger102 said:Basically, I'm stuck using Word 2003. I need to start page numbering on the fifth page with the number 5... how do I actually pull that off?

Google works wonders.

- numbering from the third or fourth page in Word 2003

same deal for starting on page five (check out the screenshot at step 9)
Samuel Green80 said:and number two—it keeps showing 2,00 as 2, . All I want is for 2,00 to just show up as 2 (basically, ditch the decimal)

Whole numbers won't ever show decimals if you set them right.
Both suggestions from the guys above fix this. (Just use the standard General format)

- rounding numbers in Excel
analogwalker2 said:And any change in a cell—say "D8"—will update all the cells using that formula (obviously, once you hit >)

Not sure why you're tripping over this one. You clearly didn't read the OP's actual request. Just look at what he's asking for

Code:
so that in my previously selected cells that name gets auto-filled

So we're talking about highlighted cells (or a selection)

The way you're doing it is just standard Excel 101 for fixed cells, but it doesn't work for a selection where the range changes every step.
From what I've seen on another forum, @piksi already knows this, and honestly, they should—it's pretty much the ABCs of Excel.

Arthur Ramirez20 said:I need a little help with Excel. Which Formula should I be using for this? Like, if I select C5, B10, C13, and B21... how can I just type a name into D8 and have that same name automatically pop up in all those other cells I picked?

If you want to blast the same data into multiple spots, just hold down CTRL while you're selecting them.
Gregory Evans5 said:Hey there,
I’m an old-timer just getting my feet wet with Word and juggling a bunch of info. I've been building this phone directory of mine, and man, it just keeps growing every single day.

Honestly, after everything @alhidada told you, my advice is just ditch Word and move over to Microsoft Excel. It'll save you a massive headache. Copying all that stuff into Microsoft Excel shouldn't be too hard. Once it's in there, finding what you need is a breeze because of filtering.

1. Filtering data in Microsoft Excel
2. Using Microsoft Excel filters for quick searches
Brenda Lee2 said:Can you walk me through the whole thing? Something isn't clicking.

I sent you links so you could dig into it yourself, but alright, fine.

1. Copy those macros into the VBE on Sheet your excel where you're doing the plus/minus stuff (ALT+F11). Or just right-click the sheet tab then View Code and paste the macro there.
2. Create Sheet Button1 and assign the Sub plus macro to it.
3. Create Sheet Button2 and assign the Sub minus macro to it.
4. Change the button text to ( + and - ).

You gotta roll up your sleeves and actually do it if you want to learn (plus, there’s tons of tutorials online).

Brenda Lee2 said:Is it possible to do something like this in Microsoft Excel? Say I have the number "352" in a cell, and I want to hit a plus button to bump it up or a minus button to drop it down. If not exactly that, maybe something close?

If that number is sitting in cell A1, just copy this macro into that specific
Sheet
Code:

Sub plus() Application.EnableCancelKey = xlDisabled Application Application.ScreenUpdating = False range Range("A1") = Range("A1").Value + 1 end Sub Sub minus Sub minus() Application.EnableCancelKey = xlDisabled Application Application.ScreenUpdating = False range Range("A1") = Range("A1").Value - 1 end Sub
Then just toss two buttons on the sheet for the + and -
Check out the screenshots at the link—I even put a downloadable example here
Sam Perez22 said:I need some help in Microsoft Word to make a table,

Honestly, it’s not even that hard if you just mess around with it a bit. Just set your grid size to something tiny like 0.01 cm. Once you build the table and format those cells based on your margins, you're golden.

Here’s a starting point so just tweak it to fit what you need.
