James Alvarez2 said:It’s not "waiting hours," they just show up for the opposite shift at a different time.

And she was talking about subjects that aren't even izborni. If you really think no one complained, go ask her if kids are still switching shifts for shop class today.

Wait, hold up... if switching shifts for shop class wasn't an issue, and you're fine with that, then why is it a problem when your kids have to switch shifts for religion class?
Either way, you'd be driving them yourself, so you clearly don't care...

Can you point out a single place in my posts where I said I'd have a problem with religion class being during the opposite shift....????

I have zero issues with that.....

Take my first graders, for instance...... five of my kids take an elective computer lab taught by our teacher..... three of them don't stay for after-school care...... so they have a one-hour gap before computer lab and just hang out in the hallway..... and nobody's complaining.... everyone just dealt with it.

And how on earth do you know those kids went home and then came back for tech and PE???
Maybe the situation was such that for some families, it wasn't even worth the trip home.

melloworca6 said:I honestly don't get why I wrote something so nonsensical. If I had been working the opposite shift, and if a mandatory subject could be moved to a two-hour block during an alternate shift, then why couldn't religious studies be done the same way? Or like how kids at my school used to go to PE during the other shift. Anything is possible if you actually want it to happen. 🤷

I have no clue where you live. I’m guessing New York City, so maybe it would be a good idea to step outside the big city bubble once in a while. It isn't the center of the universe. You need to realize there are all kinds of different schools across the USA and all sorts of scheduling combinations. Look, I get it. It makes me sad too that our schools aren't standardized—from the equipment to the organization. In one school, you've got tech that even major corporations would envy, and in another, you can barely keep the heat on in the winter. But that's just how it is. If you think there's only one school where kids are sitting out on the playground or in hallways, relying on whether or not adults feel like watching them, you're wrong. Believe me, it’s happening in more than one place. Back in elementary and high school, religious studies was almost always right in the middle of the schedule. Usually, a school only has one instructor or chaplain teaching it, so unless you start cloning people, it's nearly impossible to organize it as the first or last period for everyone, especially if it meets twice a week.

I'm dying to know if the situation would change if it were a different setup—like if they offered Islamic studies that you didn't want your kid to hear, shoved right into the middle of the day, leaving your child wandering around unsupervised. Would you still be singing the same old songs about "who cares," "let them be independent," and "kids these days are too sensitive"? I bet not. I'm afraid we'd see the exact same movie: petitions being signed, referendums organized, maybe even people praying outside the school gates. 😁

Seriously, if nobody else had an issue with having a massive gap in their schedule and waiting around for hours during the opposite shift, why is suddenly this gap a "problem" just because it's for religious studies?????

Same here. I got absolutely roasted for saying that on this thread...

Basically, over fifty posts later, I still haven't seen a single coherent argument explaining why it's somehow "great" that these non-religious kids are forced to be independent by sitting alone in the hallway during class instead of being in the room.

NON-RELIGIOUS KIDS?????
Honestly, kids today need to be way more independent than they already are...
Don't you think?

Sarah Hall53 said:But look, we live in a secular nation—the United States of America (Rhode Island style logic aside). It’s not the "Catholic Republic of America" (Kansas style logic),
even if some people seem a bit confused about that part. 🤷

Though, honestly, once you realize how religious education classes are scheduled right in the middle of everything—I mean, did you know even people from other faiths sign their kids up just so they don't get left out or stuck sitting alone in the hallway? It's a whole thing. And then you have computer science offered in the opposite shift... man, I sometimes wonder if we should just add that 'C' back in for 'Catholic' somewhere, just so everyone finally understands how things actually work. 👍

Nah... what people don't get is that we aren't even functioning as a secular US in any real capacity...
We’re basically acting like a CRA.
You can call yourself the US all you want, but when you have a deal with Vatican City like the one we do—where they're allowed to bleed religion into everything—it's a joke.
So who's to blame????
It's the voters who picked the government the way they did... you can't just blame religious studies classes for that...

Fine—so I'm the villain here because I'm part of the 86% who are fine with how things are (if they weren't, they probably wouldn't have voted that way), and I'm clearly not part of that 14% who are miserable about it...
And apparently, because my kids are independent enough to walk to school or go to gymnastics in the neighborhood or play at the local park by themselves...
People probably think mine are too young to handle that kind of freedom...

Daniel Gomez10 said:Yeah, but sometimes the "choice" means your kid ends up sitting in the hallway while everyone else is in class...
Until there's an actual plan for where those students go when they opt out, it's not really a choice at all.

And no, the USA isn't a Catholic nation; it's just a country with a Catholic majority...

Also, you still haven't answered me—if kids can just fend for themselves, what's even the point of being at school?

Yeah... honestly, now that I think about it, I don't even know... I was basically raising myself from age seven, hanging out alone before and after school while my parents were at work... we didn't even have after-school care back then...
Those were some of the best times of my life in school.

redridge13 said:If they’d given Liljana Vokić two whole classrooms back in high school, we might actually be getting somewhere 🙄

Anyway, wasn't there a story in the news or on TV not too long ago about some statue of the Virgin Mary (you know, the one that doesn't glow in the dark 😬) just sitting in the hallway of some high school 🤔

Edit: Found it, here Turns out it was an elementary school, which honestly makes it even more messed up than I originally thought...

In this damn secular country 🤮 🤮

Wait, if this were a Catholic country, why wouldn't Catholic symbols be allowed in public institutions? (Okay, maybe that's a bit much even for me)
Is it because of that 14% who aren't Catholic????

rowdypanther12 said:No, I don't think you quite understood my point 🙂
If it's okay for religious instruction to be in schools and take up middle-of-the-day class time just "because the majority identifies as Catholic," then is it also okay for state laws to prohibit things that are forbidden to Catholics?

Like, give me an example?????
I seriously didn't get what you were asking.

rowdypanther12 said:So, shadowcrane91, do you really think it’s okay to bake Catholic values into laws that apply to everyone?

Look, in any country, the majority calls the shots. Whoever the majority picks, that's how it works...
The majority voted for the Republican Party, so the Republican Party is running things....
The majority identified as Catholic, so we’re a Catholic nation.....

Besides, people have choices.... nobody is forcing anyone to be Catholic or show up to Sunday school.....

Go ahead, try to name one single country where religion and politics aren't completely intertwined.....

Larry Walker24 said:the majority isn't always right

The majority made their choice, and by doing so, they basically handed both the church and the government a free pass.

It's the exact same cycle... we just keep voting for the Republican Party or the Democratic Party on loop, everyone complains, but then they go out and vote for them anyway. It’s ridiculous.

So basically—I'm just totally neglecting them..... poor things.....

Look, school is an educational institution meant for learning. A daycare or preschool is where you go for care and supervision. Why on earth would anyone expect them to hire someone just to entertain their kids because there’s a gap in the lesson plan? It's not how it works.

I don't know about your local school district, but at my kids' school, I’ve noticed there are always staff members walking the halls. There's always an adult around making themselves visible, so if any of the kids actually need something, they have someone right there to turn to instantly.

Honestly, it’s common sense. We should be teaching our kids how to handle things, rather than just assuming some grown-up is going to swoop in and fix everything for them every single time.

Look, as a Catholic, because of kids who lack any sense of independence, or those who aren't even religious, or just straight-up bullies, am I SUPPOSED to want religion classes out of schools????

I never said I’m fine with people mocking each other—doesn't matter if they're Catholic or not—but I am perfectly fine with teaching a kid how to defend themselves and deal with the fallout.....
I mean, seriously—if they don't learn how to overcome obstacles like this now, how are they going to survive the real world later????

And no, I don't think it's normal for ten-year-olds to need the same level of hand-holding as toddlers in preschool, or to have someone hovering over them constantly....

Look, I honestly don't have anything against those religions...
I’m honestly so over all these wars fought in the name of one religion or another. It’s been happening throughout history and it’s still happening now, and frankly, I'm sick of it.

redridge13 said:So, how can anyone claim this is a secular country when having priests bless schools and preschools is treated like just another Tuesday?

I mean, honestly, I can’t remember a single groundbreaking ceremony—whether it’s a new school, a daycare center, or even a hospital wing—since the early 90s that didn't involve some clergy crew showing up to sprinkle holy water everywhere.
Maybe if you live in a super liberal pocket like Seattle or San Francisco, you wouldn't see it as much, but elsewhere? Not happening.🙂

Bless the [CT] 🙄 🙄

People do this exact same thing in other countries too; they just follow a different religion...

So what's the big deal?????

Religion and government are tightly linked no matter where you travel in the world...
Name me one single country where that isn't the case...
It hasn't happened in history, and it's not happening now...

And frankly, I think it's pretty hypocritical when people who claim to be devout Catholics go on about how much they hate religious education in schools (and yeah, we've got plenty of those here—people saying, "Oh, I'm Catholic, but I don't want my kid having religion class")... if you're going to act like that, then don't go claiming the Catholic label in the first place. Be fair.
As a Catholic myself, I'm actually glad my kids get to have religious instruction at school...

So you're claiming not all kids are the same, or equally independent, etc... and honestly? They don't have to be. But that’s no excuse for raising them to be total pushovers who are scared of their own shadows.

Teach them stuff... what have you been waiting for?

For them to wander out onto a busy highway?
Or for them to start school totally clueless about how to handle themselves or deal with other kids?
Real great...

James Alvarez2 said:First off, please stop with the dots, question marks, and massive spaces, it hurts my eyes to read this.

Second, you conveniently ignored this post above:

But whatever, I'm just here to point it out for you.

You've got one kid (because it's always easier when there are two together to look out for each other), and you leave them alone under these conditions. A bully in the class, a school near a major highway, TWICE A WEEK.
Not all kids are equally independent. Not all of them know how to defend themselves from insults or physical stuff, and they don't all handle sudden freedom the same way...

I don't see why it's not clicking for you that you're constantly comparing your kids to someone else's child.

but I guess that’s just how it goes when they start drilling fear and mindless conformity into you from the moment you're born... ☕

Yeah... exactly...
Look, I don't see any reason to go out there and start a damn riot against some other country's laws or their religion if it isn't our business. Why would I fight against how they run their own setup over there when we've got enough going on right here in America?
