redridge13 said:I can't believe I'm even seeing this. redridge13, you really have to be kidding me right now. You’re actually sitting there, typing out this absolute nonsense like it’s some kind of profound revelation? Give me a break. It’s honestly exhausting watching people fall for this kind of stuff over and over again. I remember back when I was working that dead-end retail gig in Chicago—just a total grind, mind you—and I saw guys just like you trying to sell the same tired excuses to anyone who would listen. It’s the same song, different verse. Honestly, it's just pathetic.

Exactly.
Man, I am absolutely losing my mind over this latest mess with those absolute lunatics! Honestly, what is even happening anymore? It’s like every time you think things couldn't get any more chaotic, some group of total crazies decides to throw a wrench in the whole works just for the hell of it. I’m sitting here staring at the news, just shaking my head because it feels like we're living in a bad sitcom that won't end. Seriously, someone needs to step in and rein these people in before they burn the whole house down. It's pure madness! 🙂 🙄

Religious ed classes in our public schools are an absolute train wreck. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start, except for one thing: I am doing everything in my power to make sure my kid doesn't end up sitting through those sessions getting their brain washed. ☕

But seriously...
I'm just saying, it's all happening right here in our own backyard. I honestly don't know how people deal with the whole daycare situation. It’s a complete circus. Every time I look at the costs or try to figure out which center isn't going to be a total disaster zone, I just want to pull my hair out. It feels like you're basically paying a premium just to hand your kid over to someone else and pray they actually get a nap in. It's exhausting. So, I just heard that starting this year, they’re bringing religious education back into the public schools here in the city. Honestly? It feels like we’re circling the drain. Just when you think we've finally moved toward a more secular, logical way of running things, suddenly there's this push to bring faith-based classes back into the mix. I remember back in my day, everything felt a bit more streamlined, but now it feels like we're taking ten steps backward. It’s like watching a rerun of a bad sitcom where the plot just keeps looping back to the same outdated tropes. You'd think with everything else going on in the world, we could focus on actual science or history instead of debating theology in a classroom setting. It’s just exhausting, man. One thing after another.
Of course, it’s the one damn thing you can actually do for free without some corporate shark trying to nickel and dime you for every second.
Total garbage. Absolute bottom of the barrel.

Honestly, I wouldn't even complain (not like I’d feel like I had any right to complain) if we lived in a country where one religion was dominant and everything from the schools to the local laws was organized around it.

Wait, did someone seriously just mention burning people at the stake????
I totally missed that... did you seriously just say that????
That's wild.

James Alvarez2 said:I didn't ask if you could personally change the school's religious ed schedule—I asked if you, as a Catholic, find it okay that first graders are left wandering hallways, classrooms, or playgrounds alone while your kid is stuck in class.

Someone made a great point: schools have all kinds of kids, not every school has a fence, some are right next to busy highways, and kids do crazy stuff...

That’s what I’m getting at—how can you, as a Catholic, not care where someone else's kid is just because yours is in religious ed? Hint: the answer isn't "I won't change the schedule," since we know you don't have that power, but the fact is things are set up the way they are.

English is an elective too. Computer science is an elective. Sports is an extracurricular. And yet, kids get driven to those.
If a kid is doing religious ed at a church, then they should be doing it at their local parish, right where they live.

This is actually a perfect example. Poor kids are being forced to be driven to things they "CHOSE." Once they start prepping for First Communion or Confirmation, poor parents have to drive them to Mass, drive them to church classes, drive them to rehearsals before the sacraments... meanwhile, the kids have soccer practice, games, model building, field trips... poor parents, just constantly rushing, poor kids, everything has so many rules and obligations once you pick something.

What you guys are stubbornly ignoring is that most people on this thread don't have a problem with religious ed being in school at all, just in a different period—just like any other elective (where kids don't need rides because they already know the way to school).

It honestly makes me ashamed to say I'm Catholic.
Not because of the people looking at the altar, but because of the people standing next to me in the pews every Sunday.

Look, I don't care if my kids are on their own... they're independent enough.
They're solo at the playground or the local park too, and half the time I don't even show up until later.
Why should they be forced to sit around inside just because I need to finish making lunch?

I played outside by myself all the time growing up... my parents weren't hovering over me every second.

The Constitution also guarantees everyone the right to practice their faith said:

Exactly... and once again, they just bend the rules to please the majority...

If, say, 86% of the population were Muslim or Orthodox, then Islamic or Orthodox religious ed would be the thing offered in public schools...

And honestly? I'm totally fine with that...

What really cracks me up is when people who claim to be Catholic start whining and trashing their own faith...
Come on, man... just be real for once. Uncheck the box and say, "Look, I'm not Catholic, I'm something else, and having religious classes at school bugs me." Don't act like this...

Matthew Young35 said:But what about the Satanists?
If the Constitution guarantees this right to everyone, why aren't they being provided with their own organized religious education programs?

The issue here is a misunderstanding of the law. The US Constitution doesn't mandate that the government organize religious practices within state institutions; it simply guarantees the freedom to practice them.

When it comes to public schools, we are talking about the state actively organizing religious instruction and the indoctrination of children.
As far as I'm concerned, people can pray however and wherever they please, but the government shouldn't be the one organizing or funding it.

Satanists (or whatever you want to call them) aren't the majority...
They didn't hit that 86% mark, so there's no reason to bend the rules for them.

Upoce, I don't even get what you're saying...
In every country, things tend to favor the believers who make up the majority...
Like in the Middle East with Muslims,
Or in places like Greece with the Orthodox...

It’s only here in America, where 86% are Catholic, that anyone even tries to argue this point...
So, are the rights of that other 14% being violated or something?

I'm dying to know—if some other religion was dominant in the country, would they actually bother looking out for that minority?

Give me a break! When it comes to religion, nobody's supposed to say a word...

Larry Walker24 said:but you don't get to lecture anyone else

If the US Constitution says the separation of church and state is a thing, then it's a thing. Religion stays out of public schools, period.

Are you kidding me? Am I seriously telling people how to live their lives here????

Well, I did.....
And no.... I didn't have some nanny hovering over me all day..... we just entertained ourselves.
Even when I was a little kid in preschool, I was out there playing with other kids on my own......
Moms would just call us in from the window every now and then.....

So yeah......

Look, how I choose to live is none of your damn business... think whatever you want about me...

If I told you I’m Catholic, I don't see why that warrants this kind of interrogation...

James Alvarez2 said:As a Catholic, you’d probably find this totally fine...

I'm asking you as a Catholic.

Look, I'm not going to get into how they decide on religious curriculum in public schools... that’s not really my lane.
Outside of a few people on this forum, I haven't heard a single soul in my neighborhood, my school, or even at the park complaining about it... and trust me, we have a massive circle of friends and acquaintances, both Catholic and non-Catholic.
As for having religion taught in schools? I've got absolutely nothing against it.

Larry Walker24 said:Nah, according to the last census, it’s more like 86%,

but even if only 10% actually live out the Catholic faith, that’s still plenty. If you want a real test of how many Catholics there actually are, look at church taxes like they have in >. See how fast Americans would bail then.
so stop bragging about "90% of Americans"—you can think whatever you want. They might be Catholic, but they're out partying, drinking, and cheating before marriage...

That's just how they identified on paper... nobody forced them to pick a label... so if that's what they said, that's what they are.
Works for me since I'm Catholic... as for everyone else who's suddenly annoyed about it, shut up now that you've already made your mark... unless you wanna go change your status.
Man, that sounds like an absolute nightmare... honestly, that's the one thing I can't stand.

That’s just Christian 🤔 logic for you. Given the whole vibe of SXSW, I can already see us heading back toward physical punishment 😢

Maybe instead of throwing stones, we should be offering bread? 😕

Isusek, chill... I didn't mean I actually slap kids—I don't hit anyone's children, let alone my own... but if it would get people to listen to me, I'd consider it

Come on now... I'm being dead serious

Look, we’re Catholics too. We hit church regularly and my kids take religious studies at school, but if my kid ever started acting like what they're being taught by someone else... I'd personally smack them upside the head.

Brother- after we basically announced the pregnancy like a month ago, you were still asking "Are you actually pregnant????"
Man, I honestly thought you guys were just messing with me. :faceplam: 🤔

Scott Morris3 said:So, I’m officially in the starting blocks. We found out just the other day that I’m having twins. Yesterday, my mother-in-law finally swung by—even though we actually invited her over the day before so we could all celebrate together, but she didn't bother showing up then. And you know what one of the first things out of her mouth was once she sat down? "You're gonna be huge at the wedding!" (which is only 12 months away).
Seriously, saying that to a pregnant woman—especially one carrying twins—is just straight-up disgusting.
My only regret is that I didn't think on my feet and shut her down right then and there. 🙂

And then come the lectures... don't eat sweets, don't have more than one slice of toast a day, stay away from pastries... 🙄

You can't even make this stuff up—what an old hag...
All she cares about is whether or not you'll look fat at the wedding 🤦‍♀️

But seriously, don't sweat it, girl... just let it go in one ear and out the other. 🙂

You're gonna look gorgeous. 🙂

James Alvarez2 said:You really think people would push for religious ed classes so hard that they'd want them scheduled during an after-school shift instead of during regular school hours?

Everyone knew from registration day that religion class was either going to be first thing in the morning or the very last period of the day...
That’s what we were told, anyway...
Bottom line is, if you didn't want to sign up, you didn't have to.

William Bennett53 said:Even as an elective, the current setup isn't quite right. It ought to be an extracurricular activity offered on campus for those who actually want it. Why should someone who has no interest in religious studies—perhaps because they are an atheist or belong to a minority denomination that isn't large enough to warrant a dedicated program—be forced to sit through an ethics class instead? Why couldn't they choose to study trumpet, model building, advanced math, creative writing, or any of the other extracurriculars the school provides? Furthermore, why should a gradebook include a subject taught by someone who isn't even a standard employee of the school or the Department of Education—someone whose very position is secured by a Bishop and can be revoked at his whim?

I would happily suggest a course on world religions or something similar to my own child. However, I suspect organized religious groups would be the first ones to protest a curriculum that teaches children about the perspectives of other faiths independently.

I heard they're calling it ethics now....🤷
Plus, even standard religious ed classes touch on other beliefs... at least once you hit high school.
Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
Look, I’m all for that—and I'm definitely on board with not giving religion a grade...
The only thing I don't agree with is cutting it from the curriculum entirely. Personally, I actually love that my kids get to take those classes....

Of course a kid is going to learn that some religions don't support gay people, just like they'll learn that Hitler didn't support Jewish people. You could easily teach that in a hypothetical World Religions class.

But if someone tries to force the idea onto him as absolute doctrine during Catholic religious education, then absolutely not—I won't allow that. There's no dilemma there at all.

I mean... I grew up going to Sunday school and we never even touched stuff like that... (gay rights, politics, etc. My teacher never once brought those topics up, and it's not like I'm ancient so it wasn't decades ago 😂)😉

I'm just telling you what my experience was...
We talked about Bible stories and stuff like that...
Learned our prayers and everything...

So can anyone actually answer if things have changed? Are kids actually being taught something different now, or is this whole thing just a massive outcry over nothing?
