I've been gathering certain details regarding Windows 7, taking notes on them, and eventually, I intend to "release" them—let's just call them "hidden features" that significantly streamline your workflow in Windows 7...

tweaks. You can find plenty of them scattered across the web.

😁 thanks. I wasn't aware of either of those... 👍

If we're talking about using the Alt+Tab key combination

I don't see it that way... 🤔

This is just pathetic... 😁

If you’re actually too incompetent to just hop on Google and find out how to type "User Account Control" into the search bar to slide that setting down to the minimum, and instead choose to blame the entire operating system for some damn Daemon Tools issue caused by a manufacturer that clearly isn't on friendly terms with Windows 7, then you might as well just give up entirely... 🙄 🤷

Who in their right mind even let you touch Windows 7 in the first place? 😢

Yeah... I only really noticed it yesterday, which was kind of a surprise since I had no clue that feature even existed... It’s a nice little change of pace, I guess... 😁

Yeah, Google hit the nail right on the head with that one...👍

Look, I’ll weigh in too. I used VLC Media Player for ages and honestly, it served me perfectly well. When I first heard about Gom, I installed it with a healthy dose of skepticism... but now? I can't imagine going back to anything else.

I can say without hesitation that this is easily one of the finest players I have ever laid eyes on. A sincere recommendation to anyone out there who hasn't discovered it yet 😁... 👍

Here is a little trick you might not have stumbled upon yet.

If you open up a few different windows in Windows and grab one of them to shake, let me know if you actually manage to trigger anything... 🙂

Should I go with an upgrade or just get the full version? I can afford either. Which one is actually better? Right now, I'm running a non-genuine version of Vista Ultimate.

Just grab the full Ultimate version instead of the upgrade. If you have the budget for it, why settle for less when you can just go all out and not look back...👍

I ended up installing this on a beat-up Dell Inspiron. It’s got 512MB of RAM and an Intel Celeron, but surprisingly, it runs quite well... maybe even a bit snappier than my old Windows XP setup. Everything seems to launch pretty quickly enough.
One thing though—does AOL need to stay visible in the taskbar even after I hit the X? It really ought to just minimize down to the system tray in the bottom right corner, but it keeps hanging out in the taskbar instead. Is that just how it's designed to work?...

Just right-click it and select unpin, then it should stop cluttering up your taskbar.

Peter Martin8 said:You can find lists of games that don't run quite as smoothly on Windows 7—though this applies to the OS in general, mostly regarding older titles—that struggle with DX10 or the latest drivers... they’ll all technically function, but they won't perform nearly as well as they did back on Windows XP.
Generally speaking, you should expect a slight dip in gaming performance, maybe a few percentage points, simply because Windows 7 is more resource-heavy than Windows XP...

If you're running a high-end configuration, that argument doesn't hold any water. Having solid RAM paired with a decent processor solves the issue entirely. It's perfectly obvious that Windows 7 wasn't designed to cater to low-end machines...

Everything is working perfectly fine on my end. As far as the CAD software goes, even CATIA is running flawlessly...

I eventually located the app, but it just refuses to launch... Any suggestions?

Just use Windows Live Mail instead. It's honestly the best way to go...👍

Noah Sanchez39 said:I’m gradually getting used to the Windows 7 RTM version, which is basically the final build. 😉
Still, I don't think you can achieve that same feel purely through the standard Windows GUI without some "light" tinkering with system files, something I've decided to stay far away from given my past experiences...

Wouldn't it just be easier for you to memorize a keyboard shortcut for something like that, specifically: "Win + D"

exactly. I just use Win + D, and if I want to quickly peek at the desktop, I just shove my mouse all the way into the bottom right corner and there it is...

It really couldn't be any simpler... I know how things were set up back on Windows XP, but I find this method much more straightforward, and honestly, it's just a matter of getting used to it. It took me about a week to adjust, which isn't nearly as long as one might expect...

I've looked over both names. 🤷

But honestly, it makes no difference in the end... 😁

ironeagle3 said:Can someone please explain this to me in plain, simple English...

What exactly is the difference between Release to Manufacturing and Retail...

And which one is actually better, and when does each one typically drop?

I heard that Windows 7 RTM is already out, while Retail is coming soon...

RTM stands for Release to Manufacturing...

RC refers to the Release Candidate...

And I assume you have some idea what a beta is...

Essentially, the final version is the last stage. This means the OS has been cleared for commercial sale, at which point it's considered complete. Technically, the RTM build is the exact same software, it just hasn't hit the shelves officially yet. You could say it's an unofficial release... 😁

If you have access to the RTM, you're essentially set. You can go ahead and install it. The transition from the RTM build to the final retail version is almost imperceptible. There are hardly any changes made, perhaps a few trivial tweaks, but nothing worth mentioning...

Thomas Hernandez21 said:I mean, the speed is decent enough, and Superfetch does its job quite well if you have plenty of RAM to spare, which helps speed up app launches... Stability is definitely leaning toward Windows 7 😉 What kind of specs are you running?

I'll also add that it boots up faster than Windows XP, which is undeniably a huge advantage... 👍

Everything runs smoothly on it, especially if you're working with more modern hardware. Aero works perfectly, and they actually implemented some really solid solutions for window management...

And honestly, the taskbar is a massive upgrade too. I find myself barely even needing to touch the Start menu since everything I need is right there in the taskbar...

cosmicseal9 said:I haven't really kept up with everything happening with Win 7 lately, so I'm wondering if there's actually a compelling reason to make the jump from XP... I'm not particularly interested in just some cosmetic changes to the interface.

That's the thing. It really all comes down to what you're looking for, though there are certainly some functional updates compared to what we saw with XP...

wirednomad6 said:I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate edition, and after working through some initial hiccups, everything is finally running smoothly... You just have to disable UAC and turn off those other notifications that drive you absolutely insane... My only real concern now is checking if software is compatible with Win7 before I install it... Back when I was using XP, you didn't really have to worry about that sort of thing...

One major advantage of Win7 is that you don't even need to hunt down drivers—at least I haven't had to—because the system just finds the latest ones for you automatically...

Did you actually use XP right when it first launched? Are you seriously suggesting there weren't compatibility issues back then?

Man... 🤣 just thinking about how much junk wouldn't work because of compatibility errors during the XP era... People were practically clinging to Millennium Edition just so they could play their favorite games... 😂

It feels like history is repeating itself with the seventh version, though I'd say the scale of the problem is ten times smaller this time around...

In that regard, I have to give a huge thumbs up to Windows 7... 👍
