What is SQ (Spiritual Intelligence)? in Spirituality ·
A man lacking any sense of spirituality isn't really a man at all—he's just an animal (with all due respect to certain uniquely human-dolphin species)😁
Are you living the dream? in Spirituality ·
John Walker74 said:1. Are you actually living, or just dreaming through life?

2. Are you chasing what you want—or just drifting along while that "I'll do it tomorrow" loop plays on repeat in your head?

3. Do you even have a clue what you want for yourself?

I'm pulling these three questions out because the rest of it reads like a dictionary 😁 .

1. Most of the time I dream like everyone else—waking up occasionally—but at least I’m aware when it's happening 😉 .

2. I do what I want; I don't compromise on that.

3. I have a hunch...
...so I swim, I sink, and I try to climb back up 😎

🙂

Sure—but if your idea of "extracurricular activity" is just nitpicking everyone else's flaws and weaknesses, then there’s zero empathy involved here...

True empathy requires understanding both those who are suffering and the shallow, stunted individuals who can't even recognize that pain when they see it.

Nothing in moderation is a trap—not even empathy. This whole material universe runs on a balance of opposites; being a total jerk is wrong, but being a pushover is just as bad because people will walk all over you until your own inner circle pays the price...

The middle ground is where it's at—nothing too much, nothing too little. 😉
Too little empathy breeds cruelty, yet too much leads to completely losing yourself in others—which is its own kind of disaster.

Yeah, exactly...
it’ll tear you apart if you don't set some boundaries
though... I suppose that's just life—the flip side of the coin
there's a deeper truth beneath the surface of experience
and knowledge
of what we think we know

if we don't truly grasp something
where does that give us the right to judge? 😢

Right, exactly?

it looks like you might have confused him with sex after all...🙄

Casey Palmer5 said:Building up a tolerance for suffering—isn't that just a slow slide toward becoming numb?

No thanks.

Sometimes I feel like I'm more sensitive to animal suffering than even human pain...

No, that’s not what it means. It’s exactly what you said earlier—learning to detach once in a while. Building a sort of wall to protect your own empathy from constantly draining away. Suffering is suffering, regardless of the species... A dog's trauma from an injury isn't any less real than a person's... Pain hurts just the same...

Casey Palmer5 said:Do you honestly think someone can just get used to suffering???

No, they can't. You can build a wall—not to shut everyone out, but to stop that pain from tearing you apart—basically learning how to be there for others without letting their emotions drown you...

No, you don't get "used" to it, though I suppose you can become a fraction more resilient. Then again, some people are sensitive enough that even a tiny amount of suffering hits them hard—it doesn't even have to be human, just seeing a stray dog scavenging through a trash can in Chicago, for instance, and feeling that sudden, overwhelming wave of empathy for all the misery in this world 😢 ...

Casey Palmer5 said:That's just not right—empathy and compassion aren't the same thing. Believe me, I'm an incredibly empathetic person, but if I actually felt the weight of everyone I work with, I'd be checked into a psychiatric ward by now...

Compassion is about feeling someone else's suffering. If you're working in a high-stress environment where misery is constant, you eventually get desensitized—you need much more intense pain to trigger that compassionate response. They aren't identical, though they're close... Empathy is deeper—it’s literally stepping into someone else's emotional state—whereas compassion happens when you experience their agony as if it were your own, almost taking a piece of that burden onto yourself. Compassion is always tethered to pain, but empathy doesn't have to be. You can feel someone else's pure joy through empathy, and let it lift you up too🙂 .

Casey Palmer5 said:Let’s be clear—empathy isn't about drowning in someone else's misery... It's simply the ability to recognize and actually grasp what they're feeling.

To truly recognize them—and actually make sense of what they're doing—you have to step into their shoes... find a way to see things from their perspective...

Joseph Davis5 said:Honestly, I’m not even sure if anyone actually claimed that—but they didn't. We used to think pity just wasn't quite enough...

Exactly—pity is inherently selfish, whereas sympathy is selfless. It’s about identifying with someone else's pain as if it were your own. Pity always maintains this clinical distance from the subject...

Is empathy and compassion officially dead? 😕

Nancy Chase2 put it perfectly—honestly, I couldn't have articulated it better myself...👍
Alex Thompson5 said:What does conscience actually mean? How does it even develop... through self-preservation... or this innate sense of right and wrong? Where does all of that originate within our internal programming?

How do you view the reasons why conscience exists?

And how would you personally define it?🙄

Conscience as a spiritual dimension of a living program—a human being?

Where does it come from in the code? Well, look, Alex Thompson5, that "program" isn't exactly properly installed in everyone 😁. Conscience is basically the metric of how close you are to your true self—whether you've been blinded by this hollow material world and all its endless lies 😉. If you actually know who you are, you know exactly what to do—and more importantly, what not to do. It’s not about fear of punishment or some external authority; it’s just a feeling: I feel right when I act correctly, or I feel uneasy when I don't. Of course, if someone is just dull and blinded by it all, they usually feel fine—they couldn't care less about their conscience because staying lost in this materialist charade is more important to them 😠.

Sure, it's a spiritual category, but it isn't programmed equally into everyone 😁. A person lives a life, gains experience... they have to program themselves as they go.

Joseph Davis5 said:You need Wisdom for that—without it, you're just acting out of pity, which isn't the same thing as empathy at all.

I think this is the crux of the matter—so many people seem to conflate the two. Condolences and empathy aren't the same as pity. In fact, if you look at the core motivations, the cognitive processes behind them are worlds apart. Pity, more often than not, carries a hint of selfishness... and hypocrisy, let's be honest.

Why is it such a struggle for people to actually show empathy or compassion when someone else is hurting? Why on earth are we all so incredibly selfish?

I can't help but feel that true empathy is what defines a spiritual person—that it's the actual foundation of any meaningful practice, rather than just sitting in isolation, meditating, or endless theorizing... 🙄 ...

As a civilization, we’re collectively self-centered. Individually? It's even worse. And yet, the solution is so painfully simple: love your neighbor as yourself.
Is that even possible? In reality, I mean...

I'm ready to give up in Spirituality ·
Exactly.
But only when the time actually comes.
Not just because we’ve grown tired of the struggle—the exhaustion, the heartache, the sheer misery... and certainly not when "we" decide it’s finally time.

When the moment truly arrives, one must simply surrender, let go, and walk away... 😉 🙂

Solaris said:Giving up.

Is it time to throw in the towel when you feel like you’ve exhausted every single avenue?
When the tank is completely empty?
When there's zero motivation left—just a thousand failed attempts in a row...

How do you actually decide whether to quit or push through?

Is it even worth fighting a battle you already know is lost?
Why would it be?

Or should you just let it all go...

How do you find that line—the point where you stop, walk away, and just surrender to fate?

And if we do give up, what comes after...?🙂 🙂 😕

It depends. Sometimes you need to walk away long before you run out of options—but other times, you shouldn't.
We can never truly know if a fight is lost, simply because we lack the "big picture"...

Then again, sometimes letting go is the best move... Because maybe it's just some trivial desire that isn't nearly as vital as it feels right now... 😉

If giving up brings a wave of relief, then it was probably the right call. 🙂 .
