Jeffrey Howard79 said:These movies aren't bad at all. They just feel way too much like the James Bond series. But hey, the action and fun are a total guarantee. You just gotta turn your brain off for the unrealistic parts and you're golden. Can't wait.

Bond is British, and we all know how much those guys blow, especially since their main guy is a Scot with some seriously questionable verbal skills.

But for some reason, girls totally fall for lines like: "I wunt ta buy dish lil pish of breath" or "And kill al darned koomish dat vant tu teach u kan hev ur ovn breath."

because he's a Scotch worker works for English queen. So he's a rebel. A real Scottish rebel. Like Rob Roy, ya know?

Man, this was boring. Just cliché after cliché after cliché—half-baked gags (usually some Captain America cameo), more clichés. It kind of reminds me of "Boss Level" with Frank, which is honestly on a whole different level, even if that one is packed with tropes too.

Ryan is getting more and more annoying with that goofy, half-witted smirk and those corny jokes. He could've at least played that cappuccino scene like something out of Dirty Harry since he's clearly leaning into the clichés and rip-offs; maybe like Sudden Impact, but then it would've been like Hot Shots! with an NPC playing Dirty Harry. Actually, that's not a bad movie idea: just grab a bunch of NPCs who are all basically clichés from different movies, give them the red pill, and start a rebellion. 🙂

Channing is his usual annoying self; I honestly have no clue why they keep casting that guy.

The dude plays a pretty dim-witted version of Guy, though he does have a few funny moments. By the end, it feels a bit like Dark City.

Honestly, I’d say Perfect World might actually be his best work, mostly because Clint isn't carrying the whole thing on his back.

It even manages to be funny, which is wild considering the movie is about a tragedy that really didn't need to happen in the first place.

But hey, that was all thirty years ago.

he lies bound in the woods, which seems to suggest that in one version of events, that is simply where his journey ends..

Eh, honestly? That’s just that moment where things get trippy or surreal, and then he "wakes up." You could just call it a temporary lapse of mind where he catches a glimpse of his own immediate future. Personally, I don't see any issue with that.

Look, I'm telling you, the movie is purely symbolic, kind of like Wolf Pack. It doesn't really matter what you physically see; what matters is what the writer was trying to get across. And somehow, those kinds of writers always seem to be driving at the exact same point.

For me, the real kicker is when Alicia Vikander, playing the Queen, has that totally random tryst with the knight, and then out of nowhere—during this completely unprovoked encounter—this green belt suddenly appears and stabs our hero. Then Queen Alicia basically says he let her down, or something like that.

By the end, that "belt" turns out to be the absolute key, both in that parallel reality and the actual one.

Once you pull that belt—or rather, once you make the choice to pull it—reality just crashes in on you. At that point, "now your head is off to go" becomes inevitable. It’s the inevitability of making stupid decisions.

mistyotter35 said:Rather than actually telling a coherent story, the director opts for parallel realities and visions of some possible future instead. It feels like a rather clumsy attempt at being philosophical within the wrong genre altogether.

I think you've got a point there, but look—the Green Knight basically presents him with this vision, right? Like he's "living out" this entire future reality filled with the "sin" he’s carrying (kind of like the Temptation of Jesus), and then he "wakes up" or snaps back to the exact moment he stepped into that parallel future. Even if the whole future thing feels pointless, it's because the Green Knight is basically dropping this heavy truth on him:

1. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

or

2. "Whatever you do to me, you do to yourself."

It’s super obvious that everything revolves around Christmas, even though the movie never really explains why Christmas matters so much here. I mean, the Green Knight is essentially this pre-Christian Indo-European figure who gets reborn every spring (like how his head grows back, right?), so he shouldn't really be the main focus during Christmas time.

To me, the vibe of this movie is most similar to Neil Jordan's Wolf Pack.

Patrick Martin said:Wait, am I seeing this right? Is an Indian guy actually playing some kind of medieval knight-nobleman?

Honestly, that’s not even the biggest issue here. The guy actually pulls off the modest role he was given pretty well.

And just a heads-up, it isn't strictly a "medieval" story—it's Arthurian. We're talking about the era following Roman rule when the Angles and Saxons were settling in (around 100 AD, so after the Romans had their run), though if you look at the symbolism, it reaches way further back into the past, back to the times of the general Indo-European "Green Knight" (St. George's Day). Radoslav Katičić wrote some brilliant stuff about this from a linguistic perspective, basically touching on eras predating the Druids and Stonehenge.

Man, honestly? Better if I hadn't. There are just these random, nonsensical scenes scattered all over the place that are supposed to show "what the writer meant."

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. The author is unknown; the title was given centuries later. It is one of the best-known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folk motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel,[1] it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important example of a chivalric romance, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess. It remains popular in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations.

It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who dares any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain, Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving the lord and the lady of the castle where he is a guest. The poem survives in one manuscript, Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Cleanness and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same author, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English.[2][3]

Basically, it’s just some dumb woke fluff instead of making a movie about what the original poem was actually aiming for.

The cash is good.

So, there’s this scene where he pulls over to help an African American couple whose car died on them. While he’s busy hooking up the jumper cables to get them going, he starts dropping "negro" into the conversation. The guy he's helping just looks at him and says that word hasn't been used in polite conversation for a long, long time. And his response? He just goes, "I guess I must be old."
The Green Knight (2021) in Movies ·
Totally pointless.

It's got those raw vibes, almost like a cinematic version of the Temptation of Jesus, where you're forced to confront your own fake life.

But honestly, I don't get why they even let this kind of nonsense get published.

For real though: I honestly think Clint Eastwood just wants to go out on screen once and for all.

Maybe he’s dreaming of kicking the bucket like my great-grandpa did—on a jet-black Horse while my great-grandmother screamed her head off because he was totally losing it.

That black Horse ended up leading the industry straight into a bright future. They called him a pioneer.

Hey, maybe even Clint Eastwood will realize that communism is actually just ultimate capitalism, and you can't do a damn thing about it as long as I'm sitting here chewing my cigar. Except for the pioneers.

Clint Eastwood: riding this Horse again and feeling like a total badass

Horse: man, seriously, get off already so I can go grab some hot dogs. I'm done. We aren't horses, we're people—you can't just ride us around whenever you feel like it!

Who said I disappeared?

I just said we're missing the legendary John Doe.

Mark White11, man, based on how you described it, I totally thought it was gonna be some funny horror flick with a bit of a kick.

I was out cold after fifteen minutes flat. Seriously, hasn't happened to me in years. You’ve got a rare talent there. 👍

I'm constantly struggling with insomnia, and honestly, I don't need anything too brainy. I'm just low-key stoked for the next review—it's the highlight of my week. I need something intense, you know? Like a sci-fi horror thriller... mmm... maybe something with aliens... ugh... like some weird thing trying to steal something... *zzzz*...🙂

I always end up nodding off right before the tension builds up 🥱 where 🙂

Ugh, my bad. Spiders don't have two legs, they have eight. 🕺

So, way less of a disaster than I thought. Phew. We're good.

It really makes you wonder if humanity can even survive these kinds of catastrophes when even the "experts" keep making such massive screw-ups?

I’ve been lurking around this sub lately, and I just realized we’re totally missing a dedicated thread for disasters.

Honestly, the fact that we don't have one is a disaster in itself...

Like, seriously—did you guys know that those weird eight-legged ants actually build way more complex homes than those little two-legged bullfrogs? Total disaster.
Overdrafts and negative balances: What's allowed? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
vividraven79 said:Well, obviously. Banks exist to turn a profit, and they simply provide whatever the market demands.
It’s wild how the entire global economy just fell apart during last year's lockdowns, all because people were strictly sticking to the essentials.

Yeah, and loan sharks "give people what they need," too. For years, every single subway station and bus stop was plastered with ads for these "insanely low" predatory loans.

And for years, the exact same Vujčić and the Federal Reserve just sat there and let it happen—even though it led to ruined lives and massive crime waves. Instead of sending an inspector from the Federal Reserve to shut those advertisers down immediately and slap them with a fine so big they'd be paying it off until they die, they did nothing.

And now this same Vujčić, who basically acted as the bodyguard for the loan sharks, is suddenly worried about the "social responsibility" of banking? Give me a break. Go ahead, take a guess who those same sharks were actually collecting all that cash for.

Total career parasite.
melloweagle28 said:Stop making things up. I walk into Walmart and buy some deli meat. The price stays exactly the same whether I swipe my card through FedEx or pay with cash—where on earth are you getting this idea that there’s a price difference?
Online, the price for a one-time payment is identical to cash on delivery. I have yet to see a single instance where paying via COD was actually cheaper. If that ever happens, I’ll be sure to take advantage of it.

And it isn't true that paying by card is slower either. Stop inventing nonsense, people. The only way it takes longer is if someone stands there counting every single cent, checking their change, and tucking it away in their wallet... by then, I’d already be back in my car.

As for all this tracking talk... please. These companies already have so much data on us that whether or not I bought a dildo is absolutely nobody's business.

Wrong. Seriously, go talk to any business owner if you don't believe me. You’ve got transaction fees going to the FedEx provider, then there's equipment maintenance, connection fees, plus what the bank charges for the account, etc. Add in all the tax compliance stuff, the high-speed data links, the security certificates for everything, software updates, or even buying new registers... it adds up fast. A few small shops have actually gone under because of it.

With cash, you just gotta count it up every day and drop it off at the bank. And man, I've seen it happen so many times—some lady tries to deposit her daily sales at an ATM and the machine just rejects her card, or she goes to the teller and they won't let her deposit business cash into a personal account, even though it's basically the same money. It's ridiculous.

Quincy:
Online, the price for paying upfront is the same as cash on delivery. I haven't seen a single case where COD was cheaper. If it ever happens, I'll take it.
Paying online includes shipping, which is an extra cost. And with a lot of companies, you still have to drive down to their store or warehouse to pick up your stuff after you pay because they won't even touch cash.

Quincy:
It's also not true that card payments are slower. Stop lying, people. The only way it's slow is when someone starts counting out coins, realizes they're short, checks their change, stuffs it in their wallet... by then, I could've already driven away.

And as for the tracking thing... please. These companies already have so much data on us that nobody actually cares if I bought a dildo or not.
I'd bet my life on the speed factor. I can breeze through a checkout with cash way faster than most people with cards. People always remember they need a pack of cigarettes at the last second, too, and of course, they always ask for the one brand the clerk doesn't even stock.
Michelle Bennett5 said:Hey, newsflash: banks charge a FEE for every swipe through a card reader.
Around 2-3%.

Supposedly, that fee comes out of the merchant's pocket, right?
BUT!!!!!
The seller obviously just builds that cost right into the price tag, so you're actually the one footing the bill!

And like I said, those "interest-free" installments aren't really free—all those extra costs are baked into the monthly payment from day one.

Paying with straight-up Cash is the only way to get the actual lowest price.
(Not that the big banks and their little minions will ever admit that.)

Just so we're clear, if you want to avoid confusion about using Cash, getting an official receipt is 100% fine.

Man, back in the day it used to be like 10 to 15%! Merchants would try to get around it by offering cash discounts to match the savings, but the credit card companies stepped in and flat-out banned that kind of thing if they wanted to keep their processing privileges.
melloweagle28 said:I absolutely disagree. I am the complete opposite. I avoid any merchant that doesn't take credit cards whenever possible. To me, using Cash is nothing more than a necessary evil, and supposedly a fantastic carrier for germs, cocaine, and urine.🙂

I despise installment plans, and while I haven't needed them yet, it's unrealistic to assume I'll always be in a position to avoid them. When money runs short, an installment plan is effectively an interest-free loan.

Good luck with your card reader obsession.
- First off, they charge you a fee just to use your own damn money. Money they’re busy spinning around in their accounts while it sits there, making a profit they won't share with you.

- Second, they grab all your spending data to build a profile on you that follows you everywhere online. Buy one weird little thing at a store, then wait an hour or two to see how it haunts you via ads when you're searching Google for something completely unrelated.

- Third, the lag. Every single time, I'm stuck waiting behind people who think using a card makes them look high-tech, or worse, if someone's card gets declined... man.

- Fourth: the system crashes right when things get real. Remember back in early 2020 when that earthquake hit New York City? The whole network went down on the West Side. People rushed to stores for food, water, baby supplies, you name it. And of course, out of five people in line—when there's usually barely anyone—I was the only one holding Cash. I checked around the neighborhood, same story everywhere. It didn't normalize until late that afternoon. Now imagine if it had been a massive 7 Richter/IX Merkali quake; we'd be looking at total chaos for days or weeks. People would be pulling guns at grocery stores and gas stations just trying to get out of the city.

Handing over a few dirty bills to a cashier is a small price to pay. You don't have to lick them or anything.
melloweagle28 said:I honestly don't know how other banks handle things.

But I figured I’d just get it sorted now so it's ready when I actually need it. That happened twice. We're talking about Chase here. So, I brought in my employer verification or whatever document was required to activate installment payments on the Visa card linked to my existing checking account. The tellers told me they'd approve an overdraft for me. I told them no, I don't want an overdraft. Then they claim that if I don't take the overdraft, I can't have the installment plan either.

Chase again. Honestly, my blood pressure spikes every single time I have to step up to a teller window, use an ATM, or heaven forbid, call customer support like I had to the other day. At this rate, I’m gonna start recording every single conversation I have with them, just like they record everything we say.
