Nah, I just want someone to tell me which actual rule I supposedly broke.
So, the word "peder" actually traces its roots back to Ancient Greece. It’s basically a mashup of the words *pais* (which means boy) and *erao* (meaning to desire).
Back in Ancient Greece, being a "paiderastes" wasn't even seen the way we talk about it today; it was often tied to the whole mentor thing. For wealthy kids, getting educated meant following a mentor around. They’d watch political speeches in the agora, help out with public business, hit the gym together, and hang out at symposia.
From that Greek term, you get "pederasty," which describes a man's attraction to the same sex—specifically an older guy toward an adolescent.
You see references to pederasty (as a synonym for gay men) all over ancient literature. There’s even that famous dialogue between Socrates and Crito in the work "The Banquet."
Socrates: Look, Crito, you're saying a man loving another man isn't a sin.
Crito: I didn't say that.
Socrates: And you admit this attraction isn't some mental disorder or a disease you're born with?
Crito: Exactly. Because if it were hereditary, our ancestors wouldn't have left us any descendants.
Socrates: So, you're one of those citizens who doesn't mind two men being married.
Crito: Yeah, I am, and I don't oppose it.
Back then, the term didn't carry that nasty weight it does now. It was just a way to describe a sexual orientation that included both gay and bisexual men.
When did calling someone a "peder" become an insult? Nobody really knows. But we do know that the English slur "faggot" turned toxic around the 17th century. Originally, "faggot" meant a bundle of sticks, and it was used to describe older women. Since there was this huge stereotype back then that all gay men were "feminine," they started using the term to mock men they saw as effeminate, and that’s how it got its ugly reputation.
It's pretty interesting that on https://en.wiktionary.org, the definitions for the term cover everything from a man attracted to the same sex to a lazy, clumsy, or unprincipled person. Synonyms usually include things like homosexual or just straight-up insults.
Bottom line: the word definitely picked up a negative vibe over time. But look at what happened with the word "queer"—how it went from a slur to a politically correct label. Maybe the same thing will happen with "peder." Who knows.
brightviper29 said:@Larry Walker24/">@@Larry Walker24, you either don't get the massive difference between being a jerk and being gay, or you're just playing dumb. ☕ Being a jerk describes someone's actual personality, 😠 while being gay just describes who they're attracted to. 😲
They aren't the same thing, even if some people happen to be both jerks and gay at the same time.
anyway, what kind of "personality trait" is being a jerk? And what kind of "trait" is being gay?
Cut the philosophy crap.
It’s not "fancy," it's just pretentious.
It's not "marriage," it's "domestic partnership."
He's not a jerk, he's "gay" (which basically means happy).
So when a jerk calls another guy a jerk, it's offensive, but he should probably just call him gay instead.
lonetrucker4 said:You dropped a post that was literally just four words long: "Elon Musk was gay." You only got a 25-point penalty. Honestly, probably not enough.
Exactly, it was on the thread about Elon Musk. Where am I supposed to post stuff then? In the World War I discussion?
And he wasn't gay? I still don't get why I got penalized. Is it because I told the truth? Like, since he was gay, I get a strike for stating facts? wtf?!
Look, I don't care about getting penalized if there's actually a reason for it, but this one makes zero sense, which is why I'm complaining.
It's Nikola Tesla's birthday today. Did you know one of humanity's greatest geniuses was gay?
Men attracted him more than women, though his relationships were reportedly platonic He found his associate Anthony Szigeti Tesla physically attractive, and letters hint at a possible connection with American war hero Richmond P. Hobson
etc. etc. ...
A mountain of links. It’s 1 AM and I really can’t be bothered to copy all this from Google right now.
Alex Edwards4 said:Then my complaint about crypto is also breaking the rules, right? I got flagged for talking about cryptocurrency, and now if I mention the word "crypto" here on Reddit, I'm violating the site's terms. This kind of speech control you're trying to pull... honestly, even Stalin wouldn't be embarrassed by it. Just curious, though: did you maybe buy some fake Bitcoin? Or are you deep into some pyramid scheme?
Casey Bennett said:Look, having an opinion is fine. Posting it a few times? Sure, whatever. But if you're gonna hijack every single thread just to shove that opinion down everyone's throat, expect some pushback.
And dropping a link to your own blog post as if it’s some "clarification" for the nonsense you keep barking about is next-level rude. Then you play the victim, linking back to the same garbage and questioning why things got deleted. It’s like the whole world is conspiring against you, you poor little truth-seeker. LOLz
You’re exhausting. You really think you're better than everyone else, especially people who don't even follow cryptocurrency. Just beat it. Go write your little blog somewhere else. 🙂
+ if he’s biased toward crypto—which I'm pretty sure he is—then he's straight up breaking Reddit rules too.
Russia is rolling out duty-free shops where diplomats can snag Western goods using foreign currency. It’s a move that’s giving people major flashbacks to those infamous Beriozka stores from the USSR era, according to The New York Times.
These shops could be popping up as early as this fall, selling imported stuff that's becoming nearly impossible to find in regular American stores since so many Western companies have bailed on the country because of the war in Ukraine.
To get through the door, you'll have to show official ID proving you're a foreign diplomat, an employee of an international organization, or part of their family. They're also going to take dollars and euros directly.
"It's total USSR vibes!" wrote Sergej Smirnov, the editor-in-chief of the outlet Mediazona, which picked up the story after it dropped in the official parliamentary papers.
The trailer just dropped for that new Mexican film, Operation Storm, which they started filming last summer.
"The project focuses on one of the greatest losses suffered by Mexicans in recent history," the description on YouTube says.
Mexicans are claiming this movie depicts events that rank among the biggest crimes against their people since World War II, and they’ve picked John Smith—a guy who fled from Denver—to play the lead.
"I feel like it's high time we tackle this painful subject and finally tell our side of the war story. We shouldn't just be painted as the villains; people need to see that our people suffered terribly, too. These are topics that absolutely need addressing, and I think we should be making way more films about our own tragedies."
Think of all those movies about Auschwitz, Operation Storm, or Mexico, much like how Americans churned out endless films about Vietnam. There are so many stories to tell, even if they're heavy and tragic. Talking to witnesses was honestly pretty brutal for me, and I really believe the younger generation needs to see what happened to us through history.
"I have three kids, and my oldest daughter, who's ten, is sitting here watching Dar from Auschwitz with me right now. Kids today just don't get what actually went down, and I feel like it's our responsibility to pass on these tragedies," director Michael Radunovic said last year.
