What's the point of required reading? in Students & Teens ·
Honestly, I think the Gleam family story works way better as a movie than it ever did as a book.

Sure, maybe Laura wasn't played by anyone legendary, and Ljubica Jović didn't quite nail the Barunic role like Ena Begović might have, so there's a question of whether it would've hit as hard without them.

But hey, why not just run an experiment? Let them adapt a classic into a series or a film, and if people actually want to read the original, they can do that and then compare the two.

Let's—and this is what I’ve been saying all along, even if nobody really listens to me—let's focus on the era we actually live in. We need to look at the media surrounding us, which, especially for kids and teenagers, is way more engaging and attractive than books.
In that context, shouldn't the required reading be adapted to the times to actually encourage kids to read? Why not offer them stories that are actually relevant and interesting to them—something they *have* to read, unfortunately—so they can see that reading has its own charm, rather than just mindlessly staring at a screen?
Do they really think they'll get that from reading the Iliad, the Odyssey, or Proust? Seriously?
No.

General culture and knowledge? I think standard literature covers that well enough. In an age where reading habits are dying out, the current state of high school reading lists—which has been like this for a long, long time—just makes kids want to run away from reading even faster.

I'm with everything said here. Spot on.

Peter Doyle2 said:Honestly, I feel like arguing about this topic is pretty much pointless until someone provides an actual, concrete definition of what the required reading is supposed to be—like, what should it specifically represent or aim to encourage?

If you ask me, it's just about building up some vocabulary and general culture. I can't think of anything else, really.

Plus, there's the moral of the story, which basically hammers home that every single crime will eventually be caught and punished.
And don't forget the heavy-hitting characters in the poem; they're incredibly well-drawn.
You've also got all the technical literary stuff to dig into—meter, verse, epic structure, those big-picture themes...
There's plenty more where that came from, but honestly, that’s enough for now.
If you can pull just one meaningful insight out of this "disgusting" book, then Mažuranić didn't go through all that struggle for nothing.

The point of the book is learning Turkish.
Or maybe the point is just that the book is way too damn hard.

Everything you listed is stuff for English majors, not for a 16-year-old kid in high school.

Regardless, based on what my professor said, I actually found the death of Samil aga Čengić to be an interesting read, and I certainly didn't regret spending my time on it.

Man, I had no idea about that.

Jason Ortiz5 said:I absolutely loathed Proust and his damn *In Search of Lost Time*. Back when I had to read him for school, I remember thinking, "Is this guy seriously just obsessing over toast and jam?" Honestly, those little madeleines were pure torture to me. I also couldn't stand *Germinal* or *Crime and Punishment*. They were just way too dark for my taste at the time. ☕

I actually thought Germinal and that whole Naturalism movement were pretty decent—kind of liked that gritty, documentary-style vibe.

As for War and Peace? After page 20, I was totally checked out and just tossed the book back at the library.

Because adrenaline is literally just a stress hormone triggered by danger.

What’s even the point of reading the death of a historical figure?! That book is straight-up disgusting.
Anxiety about CDC infection in Health ·
Laura Castillo8 said:Hey there... :) So, I had some unprotected sex recently with a girl who's about two years older than me—I'm 17, she's 19. My main concern is that right after we hooked up, I came down with a really high fever the very next day. It lasted about a week and a half, and even after the fever broke, I just felt "off" for a while. Then, about a week after the initial fever subsided, I developed a sore throat and another fever around 100.4°F, which hasn't let up for one or two weeks now. I haven't noticed anything else, like a rash or anything... I asked her during the encounter what this was about, and she mentioned it was her third time experiencing something like this. Later, after a few weeks passed, I reached out to her again. She told me the last time she had issues was two years ago, and back then they used protection, so neither of them had any problems. She also mentioned that guy was her first partner at the time. Now, I don't know... I have this overwhelming fear regarding the CDC, though I can't quite put my finger on why I'm spiraling so much. Maybe I'm just overthinking things... I'm heading to the doctor tomorrow to get a referral for a urologist to figure this out, but I wanted to see what you guys think?
best, 🙂

Ethan Rivera53 said:The Doors are my first and only true love. I’ve seen so many posts in the 'The Doors' thread claiming they're just a band for teenagers—that you eventually "grow out" of them. I don't get it. I started listening to them when I was 16, and here I am four years later still vibing to their tracks just as hard as I did back then. Plus, I’m pretty level-headed; I haven't been dealing with any wild impulses since middle school. They just never get old, even if the band didn't last long once Jim Morrison passed. Honestly, I just don't get how something you love can just vanish because you hit a certain age.

I’m forty pages deep into this. 🙂 🙂
