I remember watching Gravity pretty clearly... actually, I recall getting a notification about a death while I was at the cinema... October 6, 2013, if my memory serves me right.
Back when I could just binge movies on my tablet—I think I clocked in around 400 of them by then. Traveling was always a blast.😁
Well, the first step is officially underway I'm currently hauling about 650 DVDs—mostly DivX stuff—over to the lake house That leaves me with 150 actual DVDs back home (though I've already burned through about 140) that I can't even watch because we "built out" the wall around the TV before I could plug in the DVD player's cables😁 I might just try hooking up my laptop via HDMI on the side
On the hard drive, I've got three movies: Parasite, Joker, and Once Upon a Time... And on the flash drive, there's A Tale of Two Cities, Bound for Glory, Freedom Writers, The Defense of Luzhin, The Sounder, and tous_les_matins_du_monde
So, yeah, that's the situation
I was aiming to have this all wrapped up by August 11th, but honestly, it might stretch out until the 15th😁
The local city administration just released word that Mujezin Osman Aslan passed away after suffering a heart attack at the Hagia Sophia—which, as we all know, was recently converted into a mosque.
"We want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mujezin Osman Aslan, who passed away today while performing his volunteer duties as a guide at the Hagia Sophia mosque," the official statement read.
My brain is fried—I need a break... I’m starting to give movies terrible reviews lately because I just can't focus.
Right now, I’m deep in a rabbit hole studying the French Revolution and Napoleon. Because of that, I actually thought Marie Antoinette was great—both versions, really, the one with Kirsten Dunst and that older one, though I can't quite place the year—but I haven't even touched anything about Napoleon yet.
The thing is, I can't force myself through books if the subject doesn't grab me anymore... Last night, I tried sitting through 55 Days in Beijing with Houston... it’s a movie about China filmed in Spain... the footage looks unrestored and grainy... the very first line felt like some indirect endorsement of the Boxer Rebellion... there are maybe three Chinese actors in the whole thing. I honestly need to be in the right headspace to stomach stuff like that.😁 I'm calling it quits.
On the flip side, El Cid is a total spectacle, similar vibes... (I watched it two or three times back when I last saw it a few years ago).
But how am I supposed to concentrate on reading War and Peace—which is a topic from my lit classes—or catching up on Star Trek Voyager? Basically, movies just aren't clicking for me right now. We'll see how long this lasts.
I’m about to take a little break from movies 😁 until basically whenever Dean hits the theaters again 🙏
So, I was wondering—what’s the longest you guys have ever gone without watching a movie?
For me, it was two months... somewhere around August or September of 2010. It was for personal reasons—basically, I got my heart broken by a girl 🎉🙂
Oddly enough, I had no problem bingeing TV series or getting lost in a good book
but movies were just too much to handle at the time 😒
I still remember the first ones I watched after the hiatus—it was that Centurion (2020) flick about a "lost" Roman legion and then Monsters (2010), that sci-fi one with the creatures 😁 It's funny how a short break makes you recall even the most random titles
Brenda Murphy3 said:Unless something truly massive happens... and right now, nothing is actually hitting the fan. Sure, things can escalate fast, but for the moment, it's quiet.
And honestly, what "pride and dignity" are you even talking about? Do you really think some German, a Frenchman, a Finn, or even an American actually gives a damn about what some Islamist like Erdogan is blathering about? You think they’d jump into a conflict just to flex their muscles? That wouldn't be showing "character"—it would just be stupid. It would be sinking right down to Erdogan's level for no reason at all.
Guys like Erdogan and Vučić—they usually get kicked out by their own people eventually. Right now, they're tolerated for various reasons, and they'll stay tolerated for a while longer. But if Erdogan actually threatened someone significant or the entire European Union (which he can't, because Turkey's economy is basically a rounding error within the EU framework)—he'd be gone in a heartbeat, or the country would be totally isolated. Simple as that.
All these fantasies floating around here about how powerful Turkey is or how insignificant the European Union is? They're just that—fantasies.
yeah, we all know Germans, Dutch, and everyone else sold their souls for the Euro 😁 I know this from colleagues in the diaspora who move to Germany... to them, the Euro is all that matters... people will practically walk away from their church over a hundred bucks 🤣 but that's not the metric here... I also don't buy that cliché about the people throwing out Erdogan... they might, if someone like Maddox were to fail spectacularly... but I don't see any defeats yet... the guy is popular... even among the diaspora living in democracies... so he won't fall anytime soon—maybe only if biology catches up to him, though I doubt it's happening anytime soon. So basically, we have this guy stirring the pot while Europe just sits there hoping things don't escalate. 😵
You’ve got a point there but honestly—how long can economic interests stay the top priority? is there ever going to be any sense of pride or dignity involved here? how much longer are we just going to obsess over the potential fallout for the bottom line?
I mean, at the end of the day, does Turkey even have anything like a BLM movement? you know, the kind where people tear down statues of old sultans because they were basically colonizers and exploiters all that stuff is there a single political party or even one lone representative out there actually pushing for that?
The Turkey problem is something only Napoleon could have actually fixed Maybe then they would have finally become a modern European state, just like the rest of us over here on the continent.
There isn't much else to say here. People in the West—honestly, they couldn't care less about churches in their own backyard, let alone some church halfway across the world. Meanwhile, people from the East seem deeply invested in a mosque on the other side of the planet.
We're looking at a clash of two completely different worldviews—one that essentially exploits the passivity of the other. Let them pray, I guess; hopefully, they're happy.
So, I’m currently juggling three books at once... I’m doing a re-read of Dune—honestly, I can't stop—plus I've got Claude from Graves, which is basically making my eyes fall out of my head because I'm reading so much... and then there's an intro to psychoanalysis. I've really fallen down that rabbit hole. Reading... though my attention span is starting to tank on Dylan Dog... pausing... Watching three movies right now... two classics... but honestly, one is just second-rate garbage and some random Chinese flick... typing on my phone... turning it off Getting back to Graves...
It really comes down to the content, I guess... I wouldn't bother watching actual films while I'm busy typing on my phone
I didn't watch the movie on my phone But I did catch it on my 9-inch tablet... I've gone through about 300 titles or something But I wouldn't do it anymore... I could handle it then, but I can't now... I need a big screen. It's all just a phase, anyway
Just trying not to get ripped off on Marketplace How much is a 1990 Bijelo Dugme CD actually worth after all this time? And what about that GnR Use Your Illusion II from '91?
