No, Big Black - Songs about Fucking... Dead Billy...
I’ve got a photo uploaded, but yesterday I was rocking a dark green coat and a gray checkered cap, just sort of half-dancing near the stage. And yeah, I had a beer in hand. 😁
placidwalker53, Thea Knuckleheads is the better band, while that other group is just irredeemable.
The Undertaker said:By the way—this is a tangent, but I’m not starting a whole new thread just for this... was there some guitarist named Dujo in The Cure back in the day? What did he look like?
Yesterday at a rock club in Indianapolis, a band that sounded just like them played, and they were absolutely pathetic. Honestly, some opening act from Columbus completely buried them; those kids totally crushed them! No standout musicians in sight, even though they actually played well...
I don't think that guy was in The Cure, but if they were ever part of the scene—sure. The Knuckleheads tore them apart, so it's no surprise they still played a second set. Only embarrassment? I was actually digging their songs, until the drummer told me later that EVERYTHING was just a cover... And apparently, if you recognize half the set, you get a free beer... 😁 I caught the New York Dolls, two from MC5, and Real Kids, but I didn't realize the entire setlist was borrowed. Whatever. The Knuckleheads are back in Indianapolis in a month, this time with Babies. 🙂
Susan Nguyen85 said:Oh, please. If I had gear that good, Joy Division would sound as bubbly as Britney Spears, wouldn't they? 😁 And does this friend of yours have that fancy woofer setting? You know, the one that supposedly changes the sound for heavy, clear, soft, disco, live, and hall modes? If he’s got it set to live or hall, no wonder everything sounds muddy.
I can't believe you! I listened to Joy Division through a Marantz model 7 preamp, a Marantz model 9 power amp, a Marantz CD-7, and B&W Nautilus 801 speakers, and—total Britney! 😁 😁 😁
Yeah, well, he has his little "lucid" tricks too, but his setup just sounds muddy to everyone. What can you do...
I get it. I just wanted to mention that the reformed Buzzcocks put out another even better album. I’d go as far as to say that "Trade Test Transmissions" actually holds more masterpieces than any of their standard studio records...
As for XTC, I had one of their records once, and honestly, they weren't my thing. Traded them in for Saxon. 🙂
The latest Buzzcocks record is more "okay" than "great," but you should hunt down "Trade Test Transmissions" from '93—if I recall correctly. That one hits as hard as "Love Bites."
I haven't heard Urinalse, and I'm pretty thin on Wire too; I've got "Pink Flag" on some old cassette and that’s about it. You just can't get your hands on everything...
Some solid, unmentioned Englishmen: Siouxsie & The Banshees. Public Image Ltd., from way back when. The Raincoats (nice call, Linda Rodriguez6!). The Rezillos. Carter USM. Napalm Death. The Cure. MAGAZINE!!! The Damned. The Jam (instead of The Who). Subhumans. Big Audio Dynamite. Honestly, I could go on until tomorrow...
Maybe Anastasia - Death of Alexander (though, personally, I don't find their music particularly engaging)
That Fall... I admire them to the point of idiocy. How does a band manage to stay active for that long, churn out so many albums across such wildly different genres, and somehow never lose their edge? And honestly, how is it that older musicians can still produce better music for the youth than the kids themselves? If they were spinning "Serum" at the parties, I’d never leave...
Iggy Pop, basically everything The Clash did after Combat Rock (since Terry Chimes was such a better fit than Topper Headon, plus they actually wore uniforms and Joe Strummer had that iconic mohawk 😁), Tom Waits, and Nick Cave—just leave Bob Dylan out of it.
A friend of mine owns this five-component Panasonic system. I have never heard anything more muddy or inferior in my entire life. It’s no wonder what Susan Nguyen8 listens to; even the Buzzcocks would sound depressing on a setup like that... 😁
Aiwa—terrible experiences there. You put something on a tape and feel sick when you actually play it back. Philips is even worse; every single moving part breaks within a year or two.
I own some mediocre Sony Space Invaders line with three CD players (they skip), two cassette decks (they crackle), and a radio (it just hisses, no matter how much you fiddle with that wire antenna, regardless of which local station you try to tune into). But hey, the thing is about five years old, so I suppose it was expected. The CDs need cleaning, I don't really need the radio, and the speakers are actually its only redeeming quality—honestly the best sound I've ever heard from a mini-system. The only problem is the unit lacks a classic equalizer; instead, you just choose from a few presets (jazz, rock, dance...), all of which seem specifically designed for techno. I have to set it to the brightest preset (labeled "soul"?!), turn the extra bass down to zero, and then I get a decent sound with solid bass. I shudder to think how it would sound on any other setting... 😲
