Sure, but when you’re screaming "here we are now, entertain us," you aren't actually thinking about what Kurt was trying to convey. You're just caught up in how high-energy and hyper-positive it sounds—it's basically the ultimate anthem for jumping around while drunk. 🙂
Look, I know my way around >, which is why I brought up >—that’s how he signed it on that record. You've already read Kevin Chavez3's take on the album. 😁
And when I was talking about the gap between > and >, I was strictly referring to their commercial scale. > is just one hit after another, whereas > is raw, gritty, and unapologetic...
To be honest, those lyrics felt pretty spot on, even if they lean a bit too hard into that "romanticized biography" vibe. Look, it’s rare to see someone follow up an album like > with something like >. Then again, who really knows... I wouldn't go so far as to say > was created against Kurt's will, but it seems like he grew disillusioned with the fame almost instantly. Still, the guy was listening to MDC back when he was just a teenager... 😁
To me, GVSB was absolutely phenomenal—easily the best band on the planet. They played everything from "Wilmington" and "Cruise Your New Baby" to "(I) Don't Got a Place" and all their hits. Scott was clearly trying to outdo Jon Spencer with that "Thank... you... very... fuckin'... much...." bit, and man, it was hot, we were drinking, dancing... just pure bliss. But then I hear the older crowd complaining that they were way better back in the nineties, that this current lineup isn't cutting it, and that they desperately miss Eli Janney (even though some guy stepped in and handled the bass and keys perfectly fine). Honestly, give me a break! My only real gripe was "Kitty-Yo," which is a terrible song; if they had played "Explicitly Yours" instead, it would have been perfection... but even so, it was an incredible night. 🙂
I barely managed to squeeze into the Girls Against Boys show at the local club, but since they only cap capacity at about eight people, it doesn't even count. 😁
Good grief, if Iggy Pop were my benchmark for uncompromising artistic expression, I’d probably want to end it all after one listen to "Blah Blah Blah." But he isn't... so I can just drop the needle on the record and enjoy myself...
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten. I’ve just been living through a complete financial nightmare lately: my student grant is over two months late, work has been non-existent, and I was literally broke. On Friday, I’d borrow a hundred bucks from my parents just to hit the bar twice, and by Sunday, I was back to having absolutely nothing. Things are finally moving again, though—I actually got a paycheck, so I'll finally have $2.25 to send you. 🙄 What a miserable existence...
Hey, would anyone be willing to give me the lowdown on Predin and/or Lačnog Franc? I’ve never actually listened to them, but I caught a recording of a Predin concert on TV a few weeks ago, and I was honestly floored. There’s just something about that music... it has this undeniable charm. I just don't seem to know anyone else who listens to them... 😢
I’ve never actually seen Spot live, but honestly, the Pixies version is ten times better. I don't care. The original feels too limp, too high, trying way too hard to be "cool"... but this remix? It makes me want to actually feel something, to experience it... 😉
I haven't actually listened to Bend, but I can't stand the song titles I see popping up on other people's playlists. The Locust does this kind of thing much more effectively ("How to Build a Pessimistic Lie Detector"! "anything Jesus Does i Can do Better"! "Priest with The Sexually Transmitted Diseases get out of my Bed"! "How to Become a Virgin"! "Gluing Carpet to Your Genitals Does not make you a Cantaloupe"!).
