Overlord (2018) in Movies ·
ORIGINAL TITLE: Overlord
DIRECTOR: Julius Avery | GENRE: Action Horror, Mystery
CAST: Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbak
RUNTIME: 109 minutes | YEAR: 2018 | COUNTRY: USA

MOVIE PLOT:
On the night of D-Day, a squad of soldiers is sent deep into Nazi-occupied France to pull off one final mission. Once they're on the ground, they stumble upon a secret lab where the Nazis are running these absolutely twisted experiments on local villagers. All their combat training didn't prepare them for this nightmare—they have to try and save the world from an even bigger threat: a squad of genetically enhanced Super Soldiers!

So I watched this yesterday and honestly, I wasn't exactly blown away... it was okay, I guess, but definitely didn't live up to the hype I had in my head.
It kicks off with such intensity, and you’re sitting there with these huge expectations during the first fifteen minutes, but then everything just kind of deflates into this massive middle section where nothing really happens... it feels like a lot of filler. Plus, I feel like they totally wasted the whole setup with the tower and those creepy experiments the Nazis were doing to make those super soldier/zombie things. We barely even see them! Maybe if this was meant to be the start of some big franchise—since the ending is open enough for that—I would’ve respected it a bit more as a pilot for a series... but as it stands?
It's a decent watch, but nothing special... just a mediocre flick.
We seriously need to pass some kind of law to stop Ridley Scott from constantly messing with his own movies anymore. It’s like watching someone repeatedly beat a dead horse... If the original inspiration is gone for good, then maybe he should just hang it up and retire already.
Venom (2018) in Movies ·
silentskipper3 said:I suppose the timing works out okay, since between Lady Gaga and Venom, Venom feels like the better pick to me. Aside from the Peppermint release, I don't think the schedule is anything particularly impressive

Man, this thing with Gaga is top-tier. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if they had just picked Gaga over Venom instead...
I gotta say, Rockwell totally nailed the Bush look, it’s honestly spot on. If this doesn't end up being Oscarworthy, I don't know what will be... You can already see some of the heavy hitters lining up for the lead role too: Bale, Malek, Cooper...

I have absolutely no clue what kind of movie those people were watching when they gave this a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, because honestly, Venom was a blast despite a few weird character inconsistencies here and there, though that didn't really ruin the experience for me. It was super fun, and yeah, maybe Hardy trips up a little in certain spots, but overall he’s just great...
wow, they really nailed those portrayals... Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush. I was reading somewhere that Bale actually put on some weight this time by working strictly with a nutritionist.
Lady Gaga (What a Wonderful World) in Movies ·
Man, Marion Cotillard absolutely crushed this role, it was insane. 🙏 Honestly, it’s probably one of the most deserved Oscars in history. In this part, even Meryl Streep couldn't touch her...

I caught this at the theater last night and honestly, it wasn't really what I was expecting... I wish they had gone with a more serious tone, because while I don't mind all the hilarious comedy bits—which were actually pretty funny—it's hard to take the whole thing seriously as a crime mystery drama when the genre claims to be, especially since it keeps veering into parody territory, like that scene where Stephanie shoots Sean with a blank or when the car hits Emily. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are both amazing, and the kids are cute, plus I absolutely loved those outfits Blake was rocking, but the movie just didn't hit the mark for me, so I left feeling kind of disappointed...

Has anyone else seen it yet? What did you guys think?

That's exactly how I felt. The movie isn't bad, it's fun enough, though the ending is pretty weak since it feels like some cheap off-brand comedy, but I just don't see the thriller or the mystery elements in there. It's a bummer because at one point I kept thinking about Gone Girl... instead, it just feels like a comedy inspired by Gone Girl.

I don't see why we should ban anything, honestly... these kinds of gatherings are always a perfect excuse for the FBI to come out, count heads, and keep tabs on anyone still honoring that old American dictator.
Den of Thieves in Movies ·
Is this some kind of joke? Honestly, the whole movie felt like nothing more than hardcore gay porn—just zero plot, just two leads constantly checking each other out... If nothing else, I’m officially convinced that from now on, I am staying far away from anything starring Gerard Butler. He’s way better suited for those cheesy romantic comedies anyway.
Phantom Thread (2017) in Movies ·
It’s just way too pretentious and honestly, God, it's boring. That piano music just makes the whole vibe even worse. Watching Alma was actually pretty uncomfortable... that dinner argument scene felt about as intense as some cheap Lifetime movie drama.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) in Movies ·
I’m honestly kind of glad Ridley Scott slapped that "inspired by true events" disclaimer at the end, because let's be real, things definitely didn't go down like that in actual life... As for the movie itself, whenever the directing felt a bit shaky, the soundtrack just felt totally disjointed and poorly picked, though it's an okay watch overall. It keeps you hooked for those two hours without any boring stretches, but yeah, that's about it. There were moments where, even with Christopher Plummer giving such a killer performance, I found myself wondering how on earth that scene with Kevin Spacey actually looked in person.

I actually found this one to be such a pleasant surprise, honestly... there were some really funny moments, mostly involving the family dynamics or just poking fun at Pakistani culture and all those weird stereotypes.
If I'm getting this right, the whole comedy is based on a true story, where the screenwriter is basically the "real Emily" and Kumail Nanjiani plays Kumail? Pretty clever. I've always been a fan of Zoe Kazan, too. My sister actually asked me before we watched if it was a true story, and I was like, hello, it's a comedy, obviously... then karma totally hit her when they showed those actual photos of them on screen, lol

Just another total mystery in this year's festival circuit. I remember like a month ago when they were all over the news announcing how this movie racked up these insane scores on all those niche film sites. Honestly, after seeing the trailer, I was actually kind of hyped for it... but I don't know what the catch is, because to me, this was just super mediocre and totally forgettable. There’s absolutely nothing about it that stands out from the pack, not in the festival scene or anywhere else for that matter. Is the hype just because
is a female director? What gives? The acting ensemble was just okay, the plot has been done a million times and isn't interesting in the slightest, and the ending was just... unclear... Best actress in comedy / musical? I'm pretty sure any female character from The Greatest Showman would've given a better performance..
