What's one life-changing moment you'll never forget? in Psychology & Therapy ·
For most people dealing with mental health struggles, there isn't just one single, isolated incident that triggers a sudden shift in perception or behavior—it’s rarely that simple. Plus, modern science doesn't really bother trying to draw a hard line between "normal" and "abnormal" anymore; instead, they focus on specific symptoms. Because of that, I think this particular topic might be a bit of a dead end. OP, if you're actually looking to talk through a personal struggle or something that's been weighing on you, please feel free to start a new thread over at Psychobabble.

edit: In my opinion, a much more productive way to frame this would be something like, "When was the first time you felt like something wasn't quite right?"—or something along those lines. Maybe try drafting an intro post with that kind of angle instead. 🙂
Alright, what is even going on with this discussion??? Dead, if you don't pull it together, I'm actually going to start deleting replies to your posts—because seriously, this is just getting ridiculous.
Do you actually know what you want out of life? in Psychology & Therapy ·
Nicholas Gonzalez8 said:I feel like this ties right back into my whole thread, "What do you actually want to be, what do you want to own, and what do you want to do?" In that one, I laid out a few questions that—if you actually sit down and do the work—should help you nail down those answers.

Look, personally, I know exactly what I’m after, but let’s be real—it took me years of trial and error to finally get there.

Thanks, zoki 🙂—but just so we aren't repeating ourselves here, I'm going to lock this thread down. Everyone is more than welcome to head over to the main discussion at this link instead 😉

This topic is from back in 2010—let’s just let it rest in peace.
Gerald Long2 said:The bare minimum we could implement would be a mandatory interview process for anyone applying to psychology programs.

Honestly, whenever I see the caliber of applicants enrolling in those departments, it gives me the chills. When I hear a prospective psychologist suggest that pedophilia and homosexuality are on the same level, or claim that being gay is a sin, I can't help but think that a rigorous interview could prevent a total disaster.

Of course, a freshman is still a long way from becoming a licensed psychologist or a psychiatrist, but even this small procedural step is better than nothing at all.

Some universities used to have that practice in place, but they ended up getting rid of it. 🙂

Alright, let's get back to the actual topic at hand, shall we?
Yeah, I’ve honestly never come across the term "truthful" being used in these scales—and believe me, I have filled out a massive amount of questionnaires, even putting together 🤷 myself at one point. Even with the English versions, I haven't really run into the word "incorrect," though I'll admit I haven't looked at quite as many of those.
I feel like you could easily translate "false" as "inaccurate"—maybe even adding a little nuance like "inaccurate for me personally"—but then again, that starts to drift a bit from how they actually phrase things in English.

All the posts regarding therapy have been moved over here 🙂
It’s perfectly fine to dig up an old thread if there’s actually something worth talking about—in fact, most of the time, I’d much rather you do that than clutter the board with a brand-new topic. That said, replying to ancient posts—especially when you're just asking questions—doesn't usually get you very far. There's a good chance the people who originally posted here have moved on from the forum entirely, changed their handles, or simply changed their minds about whatever they were arguing back then. It’s totally cool to build on someone's previous thoughts or find inspiration in an old post, but trying to have a real debate with comments that are several years old? That’s just a dead end. Feel free to keep a conversation going, just don't try to pick a fight with "ghosts." 😉
@silentjackal52, you’re seriously replying to posts from 2010? Please, don't.

shadowbear9 said:Hmm, okay, Miss Irritatingly Pretentious... I actually asked her if she was still taking the medications you recommended I discuss with my doctor. My mom has a massive stockpile given her condition, so I’ll probably pick up some of the ones you mentioned and consult with her psychiatrist. She brought up Q-pin, though she called the "Q" something else; I wonder if "Q" is just shorthand for the full name? On top of that, she told me she’d save the Sanval for me since she doesn't take it, which, frankly, has absolutely nothing to do with you. I have my own brain, so I don't need your insults; I am fully aware of what's going on. Besides, I’ve dealt with Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Misivas, Norvasc, Sanval, and the whole gang before they were even officially prescribed to me, so I’m certainly not... losing my mind over morphine.🙄.

I honestly still can't wrap my head around how spiteful and wretched people can be. It feels like I might just quit the internet entirely because instead of having a civilized discussion or offering actual advice, everyone just resorts to throwing stones at every minor slip-up—especially these condescending admins.

And seriously, Rose, try being a bit smarter and just stay quiet rather than trying to make others look foolish; you're only making yourself look ridiculous. 😉

Do I really need to provide more justifications?

Maybe this kind of platform really isn't for someone who can't handle a bit of confrontation. And honestly, taking medication "on the side" without a prescription isn't just ill-advised—it's reckless and potentially dangerous.

There's absolutely no reason to resort to insults.

shadowbear9 said:So, I just got off the phone with my mother—she’s basically an expert on pharmaceuticals (in her own mind)—and I asked her about those antipsychotics. She confirmed that they definitely knock you out, so she’s actually going to set some aside for me to test out and see how they affect me. After that, I’ll probably have to go sit down with my psychiatrist and read the manual myself, since she clearly forgot to mention such an obvious detail. 😠

🤦

Please, once you're done reading your little primer—assuming the doctors aren't actually doing their jobs right—do us all a favor and share that anecdote with the group.

And my parents, like I mentioned before, they're dealing with health issues, so they aren't exactly in a position to play referee for these kinds of dilemmas.

All I was trying to do was get a pulse check—you know, see if I'm just being the weird one here or if this is a real thing. I just wanted to see if anyone else has been stuck in a similar spot and how they navigated it...

To me, that doesn't really sound like an actual argument—it sounds more like a question, which honestly gives you a perfect opening to explain exactly why it bothers you.

mistymaker84 said:I honestly can't even put my finger on exactly when he moved in. It was just one day, maybe around 11 or noon, and he's been a permanent fixture ever since. Both of them are still finishing up their senior year of high school, so the routine is pretty set: once he's done with school, he heads straight home, changes out of his school clothes, and then crashes here. He basically lives here now—eating, sleeping, the whole nine yards.

So, my parents and I are sitting down for lunch, and then there's this little two-person crew scheduled to eat right after us. Earlier today, my old man asks my mom if she was actually going to invite him to sit down with us. She tells him yeah, obviously, but he’s acting all hesitant, saying maybe he won't join because he doesn't want to be awkward since he's only staying for "a few days." Then my mom just hits him with, "Oh, so you're planning on sticking around longer then?" Classic.

I wasn't really sure where to drop this, so I figured I'd just toss it in here and see what happens. If anyone thinks this would fit better in a different thread, feel free to move it around—no biggie!

So, here’s the deal with my parents—I don't really know them, and honestly, neither do my folks. They haven't even spoken to each other. The only one who’s actually had any contact with them is my sister. My mom was asking me the other day if I ever reach out to them, and I just told her, "Yeah, I do." 🤷

So, you five have basically been functioning like a group of people on the spectrum under the same roof for several days now? 😕

I don't know, honestly—the first thing that comes to mind, what I would do if I were in your shoes—speaking from a sister's perspective—is that I'd just pick a day to be loud and clear. I'd ask everyone point-blank what the hell (pardon my French) is going on and why everyone is acting like they're stone-deaf.

I’m sorry, I just don't follow. This Sestrin guy has essentially moved right into your house—he's eating your food, using your water, running up your electric bill (not to mention whatever else he's doing with you)—and yet, as a family, you haven't even sat down together to have a real conversation or come up with a concrete plan to handle this? 😕
And honestly, what does any of this have to do with psychology?
