What's your go-to movie genre? in Movies ·
Brandon Peterson5 said:horror comedy

Honestly, finding a decent horror comedy is becoming a bit of a rarity these days... 😢>
wearygardener13 said:Look, some kids in America might actually pull it off, given how dim they are

I suspect something had to push him to that point 🙏🙏

Maybe alcohol? 😂 😂 I mean, didn't Ozzy Osbourne drink like a sponge? 😁

Charles Taylor10 said:I have no idea. Isn't the other movie about that village that's terrified of some monster, only to find out at the end that they just made the whole thing up? Like, the elders went through some trauma living in modern society and decided to isolate themselves and live like the Amish, without electricity or TV or whatever... That was actually a decent movie. Better directed than this recent one, if you ask me.

Cough, cough, I still haven't seen it. 😁 Just kidding, but you really should have put that in a spoiler tag. 😁

Charles Taylor10 said:or that one new movie about some tiny town with maybe a hundred people where nothing good ever happens... I wasn't a fan of it, but the concept is decent enough.

😠 😠 😠

😂 My apologies. I was referring to the anxiety pieces over at blogspot.com, though I'll be launching a new blog for dark vampire fiction shortly. Honestly, A$H has me more confused than usual. I haven't posted them yet, but I really should; the feedback has been consistently solid...

Hmm, under what name? I'm not particularly familiar with his body of work...

You won't believe it, Dean R. Koontz. 🙄 🙄

Peter Hayes2 said:Sure, but he’s much softer on his characters. You always know who makes it out alive and who doesn't.

The sugary ending in the book After Midnight really rubbed me the wrong way. There isn't that much sweetness in even the most intense Hollywood romance...
If you're following my stories, just tell me straight—is it obvious whether my characters live or die?

I don't really stick to one specific genre; I'll watch just about anything. Though, if we're talking about the best stuff, horror is my go-to... 😁

Has anyone actually sat through The Seven Samurai? 😁

wearygardener13 said:For me, the standout vampire flick is Guillermo del Toro's Cronos. The atmosphere, the cinematography, the cast... everything about it is just masterfully done. It’s slow-paced and somber, yet incredibly engaging. It doesn't even rely on the usual vampire tropes—no flashy fangs or anything. Just a stellar film. A must-watch 🙏🙏

Yeah, I agree. You looking to add that to the swap list? 🙏 🙏

Peter Hayes2 said:Because life itself is sadistic toward them. Like I said before; if you find King's stories too "heavy," stick to Koontz. He isn't quite as much of a sadist when it comes to his characters.

No way. His books are weaker and more tedious than King's. There are exceptions like After Midnight and Guardians, but the rest are just mediocre...
Nicholas Sullivan49 said:If I were a parent, I’d ban my kid from listening to Charles Manson long before I worried about horror movies. If it came down to a choice, that's where I'd draw the line...

Right. And then you'd have to ban Ozzy Osbourne too, lest the kid starts trying to bite the heads off bats they find in the barn...😂

Tyler Sanchez said:Why does it feel like most of them are sadists even toward their own characters?

Well, that’s a fair question. I’ll admit I tend to be a bit sadistic with my own characters in my noir and vampire stories too. But since the protagonists themselves are usually sadists, I suppose it isn't really an issue...
driftingmason19 said:I started watching horror movies around age ten, and my grandfather was already introducing me to adult content even earlier than that. Honestly, the content itself isn't the issue if older generations actually sit down and talk to kids about what they're seeing. If you explain that it’s pure fiction and that such behavior isn't tolerated in real life—which applies to horror movies too 🙂—then it's fine. At the end of the day, parenting is everything...
kids aren't being pushed toward violence by Schwarzenegger movies or action stars who spend the whole film beating someone up just to show off...

I was the one who said it first: blaming violent films is complete nonsense. I'm a huge fan of Schwarzian movies and Bruce Lee, but I've never felt the urge to go out and assault someone, even if they deserved it. Violent movies, Charles Manson's music, violent video games... they're all just convenient excuses for kids who act out. It's the parents who are at fault, not the media.

Peter Hayes2 said:well, King did exactly what he intended: he went for the shock factor.

But that act should represent a transition from an innocent childhood into the adult world, effectively ending their friendship—at least the childhood version of it.

I realize he wrote it just to be provocative, but does he even need to? Even if Justin Taylor6 touched on this in another thread, relying on shock value feels like the laziest move a writer can make. Especially for a writer of his caliber.
You make a fair point about the symbolism of the act. Still, it ruined the book for me.
Good grief, even I grew up watching horror movies: The Pack, The Thing, Alien, and some sci-fi horrors that even Lawrence Booth2 hasn't heard of. And so what? Sure, I had nightmares, but it was worth it. 😁
Modern horror is just lazy: you take a group of teenagers, throw in some cannibals, crank up the gore and violence, and call it a movie. You end up with something like Hostel. I wonder how many kids actually sat in theaters watching that garbage...
There’s nothing wrong with kids watching horror, but they really need supervision. Someone needs to explain that the monsters and the carnage they see on TV aren't real—it's all just human imagination and none of it actually happens.
It's rare for a child to actually commit a crime because of a horror movie. People always point to that infamous case where two kids watched Child's Play and killed a small child in such a sadistic way, but the method of the killing had nothing to do with the film itself. It was about parents who failed to supervise them or were abusive. But of course, people blame the movies instead.
Then there was that older case where a kid watched Child's Play and attacked a little neighbor with a kitchen knife.

Justin Taylor6 said:The book is actually better... especially the second part... it's just full of pedophilia.

Hmm, either I'm mistaken, or you found that child sex subplot a bit too stimulating? 😬

Peter Hayes2 said:really helpful feedback

I assume you’ve actually read the book yourself?

He "read" it about the same way he "watched" Greek horror, which clearly doesn't stop him from calling it garbage just because he hasn't seen the movie.
The only thing that actually bothered me in the book was that disturbing scene involving a child in the sewers... was that really necessary?... 🙂

Well, I'm no expert... 🤔 Here is what I've watched:
1. A red, tedious movie
2. 2. Mad for Weapons by Michael Moore—actually quite an entertaining documentary
3. 3. Fahrenheit by Michael Moore—boring...
4. Unforgiven—a solid film starring Clint Eastwood.

I posted that one obsessed girl from Dark film 2, in case you didn't notice. 🙂
