driftingmason7 said:Look, I'm not trying to infiltrate your ranks of hardcore cinephiles. I probably haven't seen half as many movies as you guys, which isn't surprising given my budget, my age, and the fact that I have to focus on my college studies... stinks
I'm a total amateur when it comes to cinema, but maybe in a few years, haha

Being an amateur doesn't matter; we respect the beginners. 🙏 🙏 But let's be honest, there's no way you'll ever make it as a true cinephile if you don't show enough appreciation for the classics and Westerns.

driftingmason7 said:Yeah, he might bore me, but I’ll give him a shot. I'm definitely setting different standards this time compared to those "movies of the future." It's not that I don't dig older films; I actually sat down with American Werewolf in London the other day, and honestly, it was killer. I really wasn't expecting that level of quality from an 80s flick... 👍

And here I thought you just had a typo, London instead of Paris? 😬 Because honestly, I wouldn't have pegged you for someone watching American Werewolf. 🙄 And now that you've seen it, you're out here spouting nonsense about "not expecting that level of quality from an 80s movie"... 🙄 🙄 You're going to have a hard time breaking into our circle of cinephiles on this forum... 🙂

driftingmason7 said:Look, man, I’m not about to sit here and list a thousand mistakes. I haven't read the comic, so I have no idea how accurate it should be, but in my opinion, casting Keanu Reeves as Constantine was a massive blunder. And that romance subplot? It almost made me sick.
As for Westerns, I don't really want to get into an argument about them because I've probably seen fewer than ten in my entire life, and frankly, I'm not a fan. Maybe The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the greatest Western ever made, but I couldn't care less, mostly because that's just what a Western is...
When I said a movie could be "good," I meant in the context of someone actually enjoying the Western genre. My main issue is that Westerns feel like soap operas to me; they all follow the same formula. Feel free to judge my take all you want...
Oh, regarding the Texas massacre, I’ve only seen the remake, so based on that, the story feels like a bedtime tale. I haven't managed to track down the original yet, but I’ll definitely try since it’s supposedly so highly acclaimed...
I would much rather watch some trashy B-movie than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly... 😎 😎 😎

Alright, I'll give you that. Not everyone is a fan of Westerns.
Before you hunt down the original, check out a review on Rotten Tomatoes to see why people praise it so much... 🙂

driftingmason7 said:Who cares about your list? I can't help what I like. I don't know how many years after you I was born, and I'm fascinated by "movie crap" rather than the classics—though I have to admit there are plenty of good ones out there...
I actually just sat down and watched Constantine today. The story had massive potential, but it's such a shame they ruined it with terrible casting and then forced a romance into the mix. 👎 👎 👎

Is that really it? Just the love story? 😲 What about Tilda Swinton's ridiculous hair? The blatant disrespect to the original comic? Keanu's endless supply of neo-style outfits? Or the demons that look more like zombies than actual demons? 😠 Not to mention all the other nonsense in a movie that was supposed to be an adaptation of the cult classic Hellblazer.

Richard Fowler68 said:Wait, did you actually claim Wrong Turn beats The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? That’s a pretty wild take. Honestly, now I get it. Let me guess... Young Guns 2 is the greatest Western ever made?

😂 😂 I'll bet he thinks Wild Things is also one of the best Westerns out there. 😂

crimsonmoose3, how did you manage to leave Constantine off your list...
How exactly can The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 9. Apocalypse Now 10. be considered a good movie... 👎
What’s the deal with Falling Down? It feels strangely familiar. Nice move, Peter Hayes2, giving a nod to Shawshank... that's a top-tier film.👍

Because Constantine was a total waste of a movie... 👎 A complete insult to my favorite comic book...
Well, some people just don't have an appreciation for Westerns like you do. Personally, I think it's a fantastic film, which puts you pretty low on my list...

Peter Hayes2 said:you could have just asked me. Dreamcatcher is fine until everything just goes completely south...
better stick to the book

constantine...
voltron?, blade 2??, HELLBOY????
give me a break...

1. Shawshank
2. Kill Bill
3. The Shining (Stanley Kubrick)
4. Evil Dead 1,2,3
5. Alien 1,2,3,4, vs Predator
6. Pulp Fiction
7. Falling Down
8. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
9. Apocalypse Now
10. The Thing

not necessarily in that order...

Yeah, I actually finished the book, even though I almost gave up after that ridiculous part where the alien comes out of his ass. 😲 It's worse than the child sex scenes in King's IT. Look, I know my movie list isn't exactly high art, but picking ten "best" movies is a losing game. I can recommend stuff, debate stuff, or argue about it, but naming my top 10? Impossible mission...😳
Cannibal Holocaust in Movies ·
Honestly, a tedious watch. I picked it up purely out of curiosity regarding why it was so controversial and banned in the first place, but it turned out to be just standard trash. I still can't wrap my head around people actually falling for that tired stunt claiming the actors were killed off... 🤣 🤣 🙄 As for those scenes involving the monkey and the turtle being killed, nothing special—at least now I know what the inside of a shell looks like.
I will give credit where it's due, though; the actors playing the cannibals are terrifyingly convincing... But those "shocking" moments, like tossing a child into the mud or killing a pregnant woman, were just boring. It seems like lately, people watch these films for the assault scenes rather than any actual artistic merit.

driftingmason7 said:I guess I’ve learned something about you too—we’re never going to see eye to eye! 😲
Fine then, why don't you list about 10 films you consider the absolute best? Maybe I'll actually watch them, though I doubt it since you mostly stick to the classics.

Let's see:
1. Evil Dead 2
2. Kill Bill — honestly, just certain scenes where the action and music mesh perfectly; otherwise, the whole movie is garbage.
3. Hard Boiled
4. Braindead
5. Mummy
6. Voltron or Saber Rider
7. Fist of Fury
8. Blade 2 9. Doberman 10.
9. Doberman
10. Hellboy

Don't sweat it; we'll eventually stumble upon a movie we both actually enjoy... 👍

Which films hold the crown for you? Best score? Most compelling characters? Most visceral combat sequences? Most bizarre personalities? Most impactful death scenes? The definitive anti-war masterpiece? The best acting...

Richard Fowler68 said:I think that might be the one. Then again, who knows... I've watched both those films, along with several other Japanese movies from the last few years, but they just don't sit right with me. Something about them feels off, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Eventually, I just gave up; I don't bother forcing myself through them anymore. With so many movies out there, there’s really no reason to struggle through something that doesn't click, no matter how much praise it gets.

On the other hand, older Japanese cinema actually works for me. My favorite is Dreams, and I enjoyed the Lone Wolf and Cub series, as well as those Musashi films...

So, there you have it... 😕

I'm curious if this film, The Call That Kills, contains violence similar to his work in Dead or Alive?

Alleria: The Call to Kill by Takeshi Miike—is that the same guy behind Ichi and Audition? 🙏 🙏 🙏

Richard Fowler68 said:What do you mean, bad selection? Poltergeist is genuinely unsettling at certain points. That scene where the girl appears through the TV... you could eat Ring, Dark Water, Tale of Two Sisters, and all those other Japanese flicks for breakfast. Just serve them up with some toast and eggs. The only truly terrifying thing about those Japanese "horrors" is how incredibly boring they are.

🙏 🙏 🙏 And that scene in the room where that clown doll watches the boy... honestly, even Pennywise from IT gives me the creeps. Finally, someone who actually gets it. 👍
Isn't there some Japanese horror playing this Saturday? Call Me Before You Die or something like that...

Brian Williams said:Look, K. K. Constantin, what I wrote has absolutely nothing to do with SPECIAL EFFECTS. None at all. It’s more about the actual craft of filmmaking, which isn't particularly tied to special effects...

Besides, a lot of those so-called "classics"—mostly just older films—are incredibly overrated. It makes you wonder what actually qualifies as a "classic" anyway... 😂

If you aren't into VHS tapes and all that nostalgia, that’s your call, but The Ring is an absolutely stellar movie... 👍 Dark, yet absolutely brilliant... 👍 Wrong Turn is also a great movie. True...

You can't even compare The Ring to those other horror remakes—whether they're Japanese originals or otherwise. It’s in a league of its own. It basically triggered that entire wave of remakes and dragged the horror genre back into the mainstream...

I'm not typically a fan of horror. I generally steer clear of excessive gore, gratuitous violence, and films that rely on pure revulsion. Finding—or creating—that perfect balance is an art form. In that regard, Wrong Turn manages to hit its marks quite effectively, though I suppose it all depends on what you're actually looking for...

The Ring is an absolute masterpiece... though I suppose if you find everything boring, that’s just how you roll...

How can Spielberg’s family fantasy, which features almost zero actual horror, even be categorized as horror...

To each their own, I guess...

Later... 👋

To each their own. Personally, I’m pretty picky when it comes to screenplays. The plot of Wrong Turn—where a group of teenagers "accidentally" stumbles upon a family of cannibals—is fundamentally idiotic. That alone makes the whole movie garbage, along with everything else about it. Beyond that, I can't stand remakes; there’s zero point in sitting through two versions of the same story. And before anyone starts, I’m not some Xenophobe or racist... so why shouldn't I be able to enjoy the Japanese version of a film?...
Alright, I’ll admit it—Poltergeist was a bad call...
If you aren't into horror, then we really have nothing to talk about... 🙂

Brian Williams said:Look, you clearly don't appreciate The Ring, but one of its defining qualities is just how deeply unsettling it is... not to mention that it's exceptionally well-shot... 👍 The tension in this one is incredible, and the pacing is masterfully handled... I don't really care how many similar films came before it; this particular piece is exceptionally well-made... 👍

You’re looking for something else in movies, and I’m becoming increasingly "convinced" that it has very little to do with disemboweled guts...

No spilled guts, and Constantine is actually crying...

HU HU...

🙂

😂 😂 😂 You really gave me a good laugh...
Look, we are clearly from two completely different generations. I have always gravitated toward the old-school classics—stuff like The Pack, The Thing, Proteus, the Evil Dead series, the House of Wax original, or Day of the Dead. I prefer those older films where they didn't rely on a mountain of CGI to do the heavy lifting. Back then, the appeal was the visceral stuff—the practical effects involving guts and gore. You, on the other hand, haven't even touched those classics; you seem more interested in flashy special effects, mediocre flicks, and those mindless Japanese horror remakes like The Ring. When it comes to ghost stories, you go for The Ring, whereas I’ll stick to Poltergeist or Lady in White. And where did this sudden obsession with gore come from? Lawrence Booth2 absolutely lives for that kind of thing... 😁

Besides that, a stupid videotape, some senseless superstition, and a girl with greasy hair don't do anything to rattle me. Silent Hill 3 and 4 actually managed to get under my skin, but this American nonsense, The Ring, was more boring than anything else...

In case you haven't quite caught on yet, I prefer quality horror, whereas you seem to enjoy the mediocre stuff... Period.
