Sure, people can. Sometimes you love a garbage movie just because of the vibes. It hits on what art actually is—why we even care about it. I actually dug that Bruce Willis flick with the kid recently, even though it’s objectively trash. It wasn't so much the "movie" I liked, but the idea it was trying to sell. It didn't quite nail it, but still. Personally, I prefer the "good" stuff. Those are the ones that stick with you for days, weeks, forever.

If you don't get it, you aren't gonna appreciate greatness. Period. They miss the whole point of what the director was aiming for. Maybe they just like a hot actress or whatever. Who knows.

That's what I call: it just clicked. Even if it's total crap.

blueranger12 said:Alright, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit 😬 Sure, everyone's taste is different, but people love using "it's subjective" to justify watching absolute garbage. I just call them out on their bad taste to snap them out of it. 🙂

You're actually right, you're just distinguishing between how good a movie is versus how much you personally enjoy it. We're basically saying the same thing. 🤔 😁

Don't try to wiggle out of it now 🙂

blueranger12 said:No offense to the movie, but that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" line is just lazy. It's wrong. Plain and simple. If you know anything, you think it's good. If you don't, you think it's bad. There's an absolute truth out there, and this relativity crap is just a joke. Let's not kid ourselves. Seriously, stop playing games.

What a load of garbage!
even you managed to pull something like that? well... nobody's perfect. and you were getting pretty close.😢

45 and counting 😁😁

Which 4?

Liking something or hating it doesn't mean it's actually good or bad.

I can think of plenty of great movies that I just couldn't stand—they weren't my vibe, they just didn't click. Take something like *The Godfather*, for instance. You can't say it isn't a masterpiece, but I personally hated it. No clue why. On the flip side, some totally mediocre flick might just hit right for me for absolutely no reason at all.

Personally, I think Quote : Cinnamon Girl is just an average movie. And honestly? I didn't even like it.

Angela Kern69 said:Exactly. One of the most overrated movies ever made.

Overrated—spot on.
Honestly, that’s the only thing that keeps this movie on my radar; otherwise, I would've forgotten it ages ago.

But I'm not buying the "it's a disaster" angle like Jerry Evans57.
The movie isn't a total train wreck; let's not get carried away. It's more like mediocre or slightly above average (I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 6). The acting is solid. The issue is that Sophia had a killer concept but just didn't execute it perfectly. She let some dull, mindless filler take over the runtime. You know, those simple stories that pack a punch—kind of like what you see in something like *Lady Bird* or *The Return*.

Naked is easily my favorite, like I said before, but I’m curious—which of his movies have you guys actually seen, and which one hit home for you the most?

Here's my list:

High Hopes
Life Is Sweet
Naked
Secrets & Lies
Career Girls
All or Nothing
Vera Drake

(Skipped Topsy-Turvy... just couldn't get into it for some reason)

more like he did it on purpose just to cheer everyone up... but when you realize that's the truth, it actually feels worse...

yeah, I'm definitely overthinking this now

Of course he didn't think it through. He meant it, too. It's his perfect Christmas. He just didn't stop to consider what that same Christmas looks like for everyone else. 🙂

p.s. oh yeah, all 8 people in the theater were laughing, haha

I saw Sid in All or Nothing before. I knew Leigh would eventually snag him for a bigger role.

Jose Miller17 said:...yeah, some Christmas scene in the kitchen... imagine if Reg actually told the truth 😢 ... 😁

Totally reckless. But hey, that's just classic Leigh's dark humor. I'm here for it.

Watched it last night.
A total Leigh film.
Nobody else can nail that heavy, dark, suffocating atmosphere without making it feel pathetic. He just gets it.
It wasn't just Vera Drake, the whole cast was incredible.
Man.
The son and daughter too.
And Reg, man... Reg is a genius. This is the best Christmas of my life, haha. Not.

wow, my bad. guess I did. would love to hear what you actually took away from it though.

Richard Hernandez13 said:Classic. Dismissing people who actually liked the movie as either childish (because they laughed at jokes meant for six-year-olds), pretentious (because they enjoy slow movies), or just total emotional wrecks (because they only care about the sappy stuff).

Nah, it's more about not getting why people call it a masterpiece. Personally? It was fine for a killer rainy Sunday afternoon. I'll watch it on Blu-ray once and forget it exists by tomorrow. A solid 3 out of 5 stars for me. But seeing it get a perfect score in every major US newspaper? That’s just overkill. And that's what bugs me.

Can't wait to go catch Vera Drake.
But honestly, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, touches Naked Gun.

Even though this thread is old, I can't just sit here. I’ve been scrolling through some of these comments and honestly, seeing people call this movie a phenomenon makes my skin crawl.
To be real, I didn't have the energy to read everything everyone wrote, but I pretty much agree with Raymond on almost everything.
Aside from the fact that Scarlett and Bill did a decent job playing two pathetic losers, I can't find anything else good about this movie. The humor is basically on par with a Dustin Hoffman cartoon. I don't get who else finds this broken style funny—where they take twenty Japanese phrases and translate them using five English words? Maybe a six-year-old.
Bill on a treadmill??? The one he can't turn off? Come on. There's barely a treadmill in existence where the STOP button isn't bright red and visible from an airplane for safety reasons. He's staying at a hotel full of tourists, and I'm supposed to believe the fitness center equipment is all in Japanese???
The Fax that kept him awake was just another reason why the theater jokes were total flops. Geez...
And why the hell did I have to sit through fifteen minutes of fucking karaoke??? Seriously....
Scarlett, this young girl, goes to Japan after being dumped by her man—oh, poor thing—and she's too clueless to handle a whole new world like Japan, so instead, she spends her days and nights in a hotel bar despite having so much potential? What a pathetic sob story.
I will say, I liked how they were both two lonely, miserable souls ( 🙂 ) and how they found what they found. In the end, they don't even kiss or have sex in a bar setting; they just connect on some higher level, but they're pathetic to the core.
The movie is boring. Shallow. Longman. Disappointing. But what pissed me off most, both as someone who views "film as art" and someone who uses movies to kill boredom, is the unearned hype this garbage received. Everywhere I look, it's "masterpiece," "work of art," 5 out of 5 stars, 10 out of 10, 32 out of 32. And then they serve us this pile of crap. Pfft.
If this is a masterpiece, where does that leave something like The Godfather? Not to mention plenty of other films that actually hold way more value in my book.

but then again, I've been worrying about catching a sore throat for days, and wouldn't you know it—it hit me today!

Either total coincidence or just psychosomatic stuff.
