Starting a band in Bend? in Music ·
SuperCool said:I know this section of the forum is mostly for concerts and stuff, but I wasn't sure where else to post this...

So, here's the deal: I'm a 20-year-old student living in Chicago, I've been playing guitar for about 5 or 6 years now, and I've had my electric setup and amp for three years. For a while now, I've been thinking about joining a band—mostly just for the pure fun of it and the rush of performing, rather than trying to make a quick buck or anything (my playlist is full of stuff like Green Day, Foo Fighters, and classic punk)... but how do I actually find people who are down for that kind of vibe? And even harder, how do I find an affordable place to practice or play? I tried getting a group together with some friends, but let's face it, money is tight right now. Who can actually afford a decent bass guitar, let alone a whole drum kit?

Find me another guitar, a drum set, and a bass, and I'm in! I can handle vocals or guitar.

P.S. With the music you listed, we’d probably only be able to play if we were absolutely wasted. 😉

You can actually find about 85% of what you're looking for right there on DVD! Most places have fully transitioned over to digital discs, so the only thing left on VHS are those really old classics that haven't made the jump to DVD here in the States yet. Plus, they carry a huge selection of DVDs in English. And honestly? The girls working there are absolutely wonderful! 😉
Well, that’s exactly why I started this thread! I wanted to dive in and see what everyone else has watched—which originals they prefer, which remakes they’ve sat through, and which ones actually managed to outshine the source material. I wasn't just asking for a simple "remake vs. original" vote; my goal was for us to list the movies so we can all learn something new and stay informed together. It’s about building a shared watchlist!

It doesn't matter.
quietdriver3 said:It depends. Honestly, that’s a tough one to pin down!

Look, man, that’s exactly why people read the whole thread instead of just skimming a headline or a snippet in a poll! Take a look at what I actually wrote below!

Brian Foster2 said:I'm curious—based on everything you've seen, whether it's an original or a remake, which ones do you think come out on top overall?

Basically, looking at all the films you've watched, which side ultimately wins?
Richard Howard2 said:That question is just plain silly and makes zero sense.

It's like asking if you prefer old or new, more or less, empty or full... but more importantly, what exactly are we talking about?

What on earth is someone even supposed to say to that?

I don't see why my question would be considered silly or nonsensical at all. Honestly, look at how you responded! My question is objective, and I'm genuinely interested in seeing what the majority thinks. Your response, however, feels pretty subjective—give me a break! I half-expected this kind of outcome, where people would favor the original, but let's face it: modern remakes are actually getting better and better lately.

I didn't come here to lecture anyone on my own tastes; I just wanted to hear what everyone else thinks. Okay, no fight!

Haha, I just remembered one! "DEAD ALIVE" is an absolute classic! It doesn't exactly follow the standard formula, but let me tell you, the movie is a total riot!

Man, he wouldn't have been mad at you even then! 🙂
No, seriously, I'm not upset at all. I'm just saying 😉
Honestly, I’m not even sure how to put this, but it feels like we’ve been stuck in an endless loop of debates lately regarding all these constant remakes. It’s everywhere! It makes me wonder: based on what you’ve actually sat through, which side comes out on top? If you had to pick, would you say the original versions or the modern remakes are superior overall?

Let’s open the floor to every single genre imaginable!

I have to admit, this is easily one of the best films I've ever seen! That soundtrack? Absolutely flawless. I actually picked up the vinyl at Amoeba Music about a year ago, and just the other day, I noticed they released a new collector's edition set with two DVDs. Man, talk about bad timing! I'm seriously kicking myself right now. You know what? One of these days, I am definitely going to pull the trigger and grab it.

It just doesn't quite click, does it? There are a few awkward moments here and there, but at its heart, the film definitely aims to be a thriller.

Well, let me give you a quick rundown of some horror flicks that I personally find pretty decent...

Braindead
Demons
Evil Dead Trilogy
Halloween
Hellraiser I, II & III
House
Howling
Phantasm I & II
Near Dark
Pet Sematary
Return of the Living Dead II
Omen
Bad Taste
Sleepwalkers
The Beyond
Zombie Flesh Eaters
The Fog
Society
From Beyond
Re-animator
Cabin Fever

There we go... just a few that come to mind right now!🙂

I wouldn't disagree with you there—Cabin Fever just isn't my cup of tea, but I would definitely add Return of the Living Dead II to your list!

As for the topic at hand, that Night of the Living Dead remake? It's solid! Sure, it's packed with illogical plot points, but it's alright. I've had it on my hard drive for a couple of years now.

Look, I have it on a digital file, but I swear the quality from the broadcast on ABC was way better 😉 or maybe I’m just losing it? Haha, the version I have on my hard drive looks absolutely terrible!

Adam Thomas57 said:GHOST SHIP
CONSTANTIN
RESIDENT EVIL 1 & 2

To be honest, none of those really blew me away. But Constantine? I could never stomach that as a horror movie. It’s more like a mishmash of everything—mostly sci-fi and a thriller mixed together.

Resident Evil 1 and 2 aren't bad, though. We’ll see how things shake out next year when part 3 finally drops.

Ghost Ship was such a letdown for me. It starts off brilliantly, but then it just drags and becomes incredibly stupid!

Well, they actually aired Night of the Living Dead on ABC last night at 11:40 PM! What’s next on the schedule? Maybe they'll roll out Dawn and Dead too?

analogcobra31 said:Wait, nobody brought up the Candyman trilogy by Clive Barker.
And what about Amityville and its sequels...

How can you say that? Both Candyman and Amityville were just mentioned!
To be honest though, Candyman never really did it for me.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned Poltergeist I or II, but personally, the second one is absolutely fantastic!

It honestly feels like Freddy vs. Jason was way too simplistic. It’s almost as if nobody really wanted to put in the heavy lifting to make the movie truly great, though I have to say, the core concept itself wasn't a bad idea at all!

Sure, at first I thought it might be some low-budget flop, but man, it totally won me over!
It really gets inside your head—you start wondering if something like that could actually happen to you.😲

I'm pretty sure the movie is based on a true story, too.😢

Well, it definitely is based on actual events—it even says so right there on the DVD case! Plus, it’s clearly a low-budget production.😉 🙂

My apologies if I got things mixed up! It’s very possible since I haven't seen Scream in about six or seven years. I’m saying the first one is the gold standard, but the other two? Honestly, they kind of suck. To me, the sequels where they go "I know what you did last summer" and then "I still know..." felt like the exact same gimmick over and over. It was a pretty clever concept, but I was expecting way, way more from the franchise!

analogcobra31 said:Claiming the remake of Dawn of the Dead is better than the original—which was filmed during the absolute golden age of horror—is about as logical as saying Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness from '95 is better than Leone's classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. At the end of the day, it's just a copy of an incredible original.

It is a copy, sure, but it isn't a cheap imitation (and I'm talking about Dawn)! And let me just say, Dawn isn't *just* a copy. As much as we all respect and adore Romero, Zack Snyder crafted a perfect homage. He managed to bring the story into the modern era and gave the zombies a massive shot of adrenaline. If we're looking at this as his directorial debut, then it's absolutely FANTASTIC!

Noah Watson4 said:Why not!? Because Romero basically milked the zombie horror genre dry, right!? We haven't been living in the 70s for a long time now... 😁 Personally, I actually prefer that remake... 😉

Long live the remake! 👍

Are you seriously saying 4 and 6 are the best Freddy movies??? 😵

And 6 is one of the most original films ever made??? (I really hope this is just some hidden sarcasm that I’m totally missing here 🙂)

Honestly, 1 and 3 are the only things keeping Freddy from turning into just another generic sequel mess like Friday the 13th...

When did Wes Craven actually say that about Scream 2??? And things didn't just happen overnight; Kevin Williamson already had drafts ready for 2 and 3 from the very start.

🙂

What an absolute load of nonsense. 🙂

So, by your logic, the first Halloween isn't even a horror movie either?

Then why on earth did you even post it in this thread? 🙂

Look, man, I don't know about you, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I've stated mine, but I'm really not going to take advice from someone who has only seen 2 out of the 7 films! To me, 4 and 6 are absolute classics! Period.

As for Scream, Wes Craven said it himself. He stepped down as writer for the sequel, so they had to rush to find someone new. Then Wes moved into a producer role instead, and he warned right away that the movie wouldn't succeed because they were under too much pressure with such a ridiculously tight deadline!
