Broken collarbone / Clavicle fracture in Health ·
Bryan Kim5 said:Hey there!
So, I’ve been dealing with this grade two collarbone issue lately.
Since I play Rugby, I was really wondering if I can just power through my training, or am I looking at a surgery situation—is it actually going to cause more trouble down the road if I don't get it fixed?

What's the problem?

frozenridge61 said:Hi everyone, I could really use some advice here.
I had a fall and ended up breaking my third and fourth metacarpal bones. I was in a splint for three days before they finally put me in a cast. Before the cast went on, the doctor at the Mayo Clinic suggested that surgery might be the best way to go, but after looking at my second X-ray, he wasn't quite as certain anymore and left the final call up to me. 🤷
The tricky part is that one of them—the fourth, I think—is actually broken in two places, with a 2mm displacement. My doctor mentioned that this is right on the borderline of whether it needs surgery or not.
For those of you who have dealt with this kind of thing, what do you think?
Unfortunately, I didn't grab any photos of the X-rays. 🙂

It's tough to give solid advice without seeing those X-rays. Honestly, if surgery isn't strictly necessary, just skip it. 🙂
Jerry Gonzalez11 said:So, I ended up jumping over this playground fence this past Saturday and took a pretty nasty spill, and my foot's been killing me ever since... it's feeling a little better the last couple of days, but I can still tell I just can't go out and run properly because of the pain
Do you guys think this is something serious where I should probably head to the doctor, or will it just pass on its own if I wait it out?
Thanks in advance for any help...

But honestly, how are we even supposed to tell if it's serious or not?

wanderingmason24 said:Can someone break down this diagnosis for me? It says "Fracture of the left triquetrum bone." Basically, I took a nasty fall during a basketball game and landed hard on my hand, which caused a crack in the triquetrum.

It’s a fracture of the triquetrum in your left hand—one of those small bones in your wrist.
Ankle injuries: What's your experience? in Health ·
Joseph Smith3 said:So, I twisted my ankle at practice last night and literally HEARD this crunching sound, like something scraping. Honestly, I can't tell if something actually snapped or if I just did some major damage 😢 Is there any way to check if it's broken without rushing to the ER for X-rays? And now I'm reading stuff saying recovery takes like six months? Man, I can't deal with that—that means I won't be back at it until late summer. Any tips on exercises or creams? Basically, I can't put any weight on it at all, though I can wiggle it a little bit (swelling isn't too bad, nothing crazy visible)

I really think you should just go see a doctor.

Andrew White4 said:Thanks for the reply—though I suppose if I really need to seek professional advice, I should probably head to an orthopedist or someone in that field, right?..
Honestly, though, there isn't any pain anymore. Ever since I stopped doing push-ups entirely, the discomfort has just... vanished. It doesn't hurt at all, nothing. It's just that, you know, if I happen to feel around the area, I can still detect that little bone protrusion.

An orthopedist.

Jerry Ross2 said:Hey everyone,

I'm 19 and I've been playing handball seriously for over 5 years now.
About two weeks ago at practice—probably because I pushed too hard and lost focus for a second—I took a nasty fall on my left hand. Not the elbow, just straight onto my palm.
Usually, I can take a hit; that's just part of the game. But this one actually hurt. For a minute, I thought I broke something since I couldn't even grip the ball properly. Turns out it wasn't broken, though, because there was no swelling or bruising or anything. It felt weird for a few days so I tried not to use it much. After a week, I could pretty much do everything again (except training, 'cause I was scared to go back to practice and make it worse). The pain kept fading, but today... it's still there. It’s just a little sting, but only when I twist my wrist really far. I can do pushups, but they still hurt. Look, it's not like I'm quitting sports or anything, but our second half of the season starts soon, and I don't want to be sidelined. I feel like if I went all out on pushups right now, I'd be totally wrecked. So yeah, looking for some advice from anyone who's dealt with this. Not sure if it's a tendon issue or just a sprain, hoping you guys know more than I do.

Thanks in advance!!

You should probably get an X-ray of that wrist.

Alexander Cook said:so about this thumb fracture
I know they’re taking it off in two days, but just curious... I actually trimmed part of my cast myself. It was honestly way too bulky just for a thumb—it felt like it was heading all the way up to my elbow lol—so I shortened it and now it feels way better... but what would happen if I just took the whole thing off? I mean, they're gonna have to do it anyway, so might as well save them the trouble, right?

Just hang in there for one more day... 🙂

Wait, why are you in a cast? Friday is basically right around the corner...

Alexander Cook said:Hey there! What's up?
Hey, quick question—do you think I can just rip this cast off early, or am I stuck waiting until my next appointment?
So, I was supposed to get it picked up last Friday, but I totally missed the window. They told me today they'd swing by this coming Friday instead... but man, you guys know how brutal the heat is out there right now. Plus, I've got half my arm stuck in this heavy-duty cast, so carrying that thing around is basically impossible for me.
If I take it off, what's my doctor gonna say?

Nah.

Betty Hayes10 said:I don't think it's actually broken. I had the X-ray done back in month one, but honestly, I just never went back to grab the results.
I'm thinking it's just super bruised and that ankle really took the brunt of it. Maybe it got crushed from the impact?
Not sure how an ankle even heals after something like that, but from what I can tell, it’s definitely not happening fast.

Without seeing those scans, we're basically guessing. You should probably go pick up that report.

Betty Hayes10 said:So, I messed up my big toe and now I can't really bend it at the joint—it just feels super tight. It hurts, nothing crazy, but definitely not fun when I'm walking for too long or trying to flex it myself. Plus, the toe looks a bit thicker than usual now. Not what it used to be.

It happened back in December last year when I took a hard hit right on the toe.
The doctor basically told me there isn't much they can do about it.

Now I'm thinking about getting back into running, but I have no clue how that's gonna affect my toe.
Anyone dealt with this? Any advice?

What kind of injury was it? Like, a fracture?
Metacarpal fracture/broken hand bone in Health ·
Hand function should get back to normal once the therapy is wrapped up. Honestly, trying to fix those spiral metacarpal fractures through closed manipulation alone is a massive uphill battle if you're chasing a perfect result.

Spiral fracture. How'd you end up breaking it? Did they finally get you out of that cast? Any follow-up X-rays yet?

From what I can tell, looks like you dealt with fractures in your third and fourth metacarpals.

Just a heads-up though—for those first two months, you absolutely cannot lift anything heavy with that arm. You have to keep the weight off it entirely. After that initial period passes, you can start getting back to your normal routine to help regain your strength. Then, after about six months (if you want them removed), you can have the hardware taken out...

David White8 said:So... a buddy of mine had something fall right on his hand and his wrist has been swollen ever since. It hurts him whenever he tries to lift anything even slightly heavy, almost like a tendon is getting yanked. He hasn't seen a doctor even though I've been bugging him about it. He just keeps saying "it's nothing, it'll go away," but it’s been stuck like this for like 2-3 weeks now.
Do you think it'll just clear up on its own, or should he actually head to a clinic?

Thanks!

Where exactly does it hurt? And does it hurt if you touch it?
