Best CPU cooler recommendations? in Desktops ·
If it were bigger, it’d probably spin faster, I guess. xD
Plus, at least it's the right socket.

So, I found some reader that actually works, but it’s loud as hell... I'll let you know if I can get it installed

I’ve already tested three different sets myself, and I'm still getting nowhere.

Maybe try a PS2 keyboard and mouse.

I mean, you could try. Windows XP doesn't really hog the CPU or RAM.

EDIT: Just check the manufacturer's website first to see if they even have drivers for Windows XP.

The processor is Dual Core, but it’s weak... only 1GHz?
macOS needs at least 1GHz just to function somewhat decently.
And the laptop CPU is...
Plus it only pulls 9W

Two words:
WEAK CPU

Larry Ortiz5 said:It’d probably be easiest if you just made that bootable USB on a Windows machine. Hit up a friend or a neighbor, it'll take like five minutes and you're done...

Yeah, true, but I don't really have anyone to ask :P
Every single person I know with a computer just says:
"No way, I'm not letting you touch my rig. You're gonna break something or install like a billion viruses."

So now I'm digging through some old junk to find an ancient PC with a disc drive. If I can actually get it running, maybe that'll help.

What kind of CPU is this? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Tried it, but the whole thing just dies after three seconds and starts dumping files onto the USB:
idlinux.sys
menu.c32
syslinux.cfg
unbfilel.txt
ubnpathl.txt

Here's what I did:
plugged in the drive
selected it
picked the ISO
selected the ISO
hit OK

Just grab UNetbootin for mac. If you need more info, check out Installing Other Distributions Using UNetbootin.

I guess I'll give it a shot now.🙂

Larry Ortiz5 said:Rufus is pretty much one of the best, most straightforward little tools out there for turning an ISO file into a bootable USB... though I'm not sure if your system even supports it, but hey, might as well give it a shot, nothing to lose, I guess.

There's no Rufus for Mac.

I actually have an official Windows 7 DVD with the key, but I don't have an optical drive... I guess I stopped using those a long time ago..
Bootable USB drive on a Mac running macOS in IT Support ·
Hey there,

So, I've got this machine running macOS (it's a Hackintosh)
And now I need to make a bootable Windows 7 USB stick,
I grabbed the ISO, but I can't for the life of me get it onto the USB,
I found some software online, but apparently, they don't actually make the drive bootable,
Tried using Boot Camp Assistant, but since this is just a Hackintosh, that's a dead end...
Disk Utility isn't doing the trick either..

Any ideas? help me out :/
Cutting my case to fit the GPU in Desktops ·
Larry Ortiz5 said:Do you have a screwdriver handy to unscrew that cage, or is it just welded into the Case? If it’s stuck, maybe just improvise—personally, I’d probably grab a saw or a big knife. Since you mentioned it’s some random budget Case, it's probably not high quality anyway, so cutting it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Tried using some wire cutters... didn't work :/ And yeah, it's definitely welded shut.

I don't really have any actual tools lying around here at home.😢
Cutting my case to fit the GPU in Desktops ·
Hey there,
So I picked up an NVIDIA GTX 275, but it won't actually fit in my Case.
It's a Micro ATX, though I don't have a clue which random model I grabbed at Best Buy. It isn't a Slim version.

Now... if I want this card to actually sit inside, I'm thinking I might need to hack away at the hard drive bay area. I'm only using one drive anyway, so I don't really care, and since it's screwed in from multiple sides, it probably won't just fall apart on me...
My question is, what should I use to cut through it?!? 🤷
mellowcyclist47 said:I mean, you've got friends, you've got neighbors... surely someone around there has an HDMI cable lying around. Just head down to the local Best Buy or something. $13 So, what's the absolute cheapest HDMI cable out there? I guess it depends on how much you actually care about things working.

It’s not happening on my end :P $27 It's the cheapest option, I guess. It does the job, though.

So, I just left that out of range error alone for a bit. The PC rebooted itself twice, then hit that whole "getting ready" phase, and once it finally got to the login screen where you pick a username and all that... everything was totally fine. No more out of range issues. So, yeah, anyway, I'm typing this on Windows 8 now :P

Thanks to everyone for the help. 🙂

I guess you're dealing with that whole thing where the monitor and the graphics card just can't seem to sync up properly. Maybe?
Maybe try swapping out that cable connecting your monitor to the graphics card... maybe try using DVI or HDMI instead of VGA.
If that isn't working, I guess you could try hooking your PC up to a TV at home just to finish the Windows installation. Once you've got the latest graphics drivers installed, then you can plug your monitor back in. If you don't have a TV handy, maybe just borrow a newer monitor from someone? Same idea, really.
If all else fails, I guess you could try hunting down the latest BIOS update for that motherboard. Just... be careful with that one. It's risky business.

Good luck. 🙂

I finally installed the latest BIOS update. I guess it’s actually running smoothly through Windows now :P
Tried a different VGA cable, but no luck. I don't have anything else to plug into the DVI port, and while I could use the HDMI to connect to my TV, I don't actually have the cable for that either. :/
Everything's just the same. 😢
William Barrett9 said:Maybe try booting Windows 8 in Safe Mode? Just so you can get the resolution down to 800x600 or something. 🙂
windows 8 safe mode

Um... it happens right while I'm installing it... and if I try hitting F8 during restart to pick a lower resolution, it just says installation failed and kicks me back to my old Windows.
William Richardson12 said:Maybe try typing out whatever else shows up next to that out of range message? Or just snap a photo with your phone, upload it to Imgur, and drop the link here. There's just not enough info to go on.

Well, I literally wrote "Out of range." My phone died... it's not like Windows is gonna display the error, it's coming straight from the monitor itself.
