With all this crazy crypto madness going on... I see they're hitting like $2,500 or something now, but I have a feeling they were way under $2,000 at one point...

If gaming is going to be the main thing pushing your PC to its limits, I always figure it makes more sense to dump as much of your budget as possible into the beefiest GPU you can get—paired with a CPU good enough to keep up without causing a bottleneck... even if that means going with an AMD chip or whatever... I'd way rather put that extra cash toward an SSD or something else useful.

It all depends on what you're working with, obviously.

Let's be real, nowadays (and honestly, probably for the last 15 years too), CPUs are totally overkill for any regular everyday stuff unless you're actually gaming.

So, what if I put together a combo with a GTX 1070 and an i5?
Wouldn't that probably blow my $7,500 budget?

@Lawrence Phillips: I’ve actually considered that. Part of the reason is that I plan on adding a second GPU in about two years to keep the rig relevant for newer titles. Besides, the NVIDIA GTX 1060 doesn't have hardware support for 🙂

I don't know... it feels like forever since I was deep into all this stuff. I used to think just like you, buying motherboards and cards specifically so I could do SLI or Crossfire later, but I never actually pulled the trigger. I always ended up just selling the old gear and grabbing something new instead.

I mean, if you ask me—and I'm definitely just a total amateur here—the only real upgrades you actually need are the drive and an SSD. Everything else feels like way too much... maybe?

Honestly, the idea isn't half bad! It could totally work as a business model—like, imagine setting up a little indoor playground for the kids at certain times while Mom or Dad hits the gym.

The only catch is you’d definitely need enough floor space and, I guess, an extra person on staff to actually watch the kids and keep things fun and safe.

But seriously, it’s a solid concept, and I bet if you marketed it right, it would absolutely take off in Washington, D.C. (just look at how crowded this city gets!)

Hardware requirements aren't really moving fast enough for you to need an upgrade in like, 2 or 3 years. Honestly, 8 GB of RAM should be plenty—and since the graphics card McLovin picked out is actually pretty beefy, you'll probably end up keeping this exact setup for maybe 7 years before you even think about buying a whole new rig... assuming games are even still your thing by then!😁
