Gaming PC build - around $1,200 budget in Desktops ·
Timothy Fisher79 said:That’s just wrong. The GTX 770 actually beats the R9 280 X by about 10 fps in Crysis 3, maybe 12 fps in Far Cry 3, and roughly 9 fps in Just Cause 2...

So you swapped the 280X for a 270X? 😛

The NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 is already quite a bit stronger than the HD 3870, and I guess the HD 7750 would just eat it for breakfast...

I'm not really sure where you got that from. These cards are pretty much on par. Maybe the R9 280X feels a bit faster because the GTX 770 in that PC test was overclocked, but the R9 280X is usually $67 cheaper—it’s just hard to find them in stock here lately.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
None of that is really worth much. For $467 you could just grab an Intel Core i3 (which is slightly better than the 1075T) plus an ASUS ROG Maximus brand new.

$183That Phenom isn't worth anything either, especially since you can get a new X4 965 for about $217.

It's a bit more powerful than the GTX 260, so that's probably about as far as you should go with that processor. I’d suggest doing a little overclocking, though—you've got a solid motherboard and power supply for it.😛

My current setup is:

1 x Gigabyte 970A-UD3
1 x AMD FX-8320
1 x 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) Kingston, 1600MHz
1 x PointOfView GTX 460 1024MB GDDR5 256-bit (shader: 336/1350 MHz)
1 x 1TB Seagate BarraCuda HDD 7200rpm 32MB cache SATA II
1 x Dell OptiPlex DVD burner, DVD±RW, 22x DVD±R, 8x DL, 40x CD-R
1 x Seasonic 520W Power Supply, SS-520GB, S12 II, active PFC
1 x Scythe Yasya CPU Cooler SCYS-1000

It's mostly for gaming and general work on a single monitor.

@darkskipper5

If you have plenty of software that handles tuning, you can probably just use the NVIDIA Control Panel too.

I mean, the HD 7850 runs pretty cool anyway. You’re probably better off grabbing an EVGA model since the dual-fan setup lets you dial the speeds down however you want; I guess they could handle an 80+ PSU without much trouble at all.

Timothy Kim60 said:Maybe that's around 7.94, if you add 10% to 7.221. I guess. $2667 And you should definitely ask them if they’d be down to order and install that GPU cooler from Portia that everyone’s been linking to you.

Robert Ortiz58 said:Just so you know, that price is likely for cash only. If you end up financing it, I guess everything will go up—your sales rep probably didn't mention that part.

The breakdown looks something like this:

Why did you go with 12GB of RAM? 😬

Maybe grab this if you can swing the extra $33. I guess the CPU will probably end up being a bit of a bottleneck.

Keep the hard drive and the coffee maker, everything else:

EVGA Power Supply, Corsair CX Series 80+ Bronze, 430 Watt, ATX, EPS12V, PS/2, US Version

CORSAIR DDR3 (4GB,1600MHz,Unbuffered) CL11

MSI B85M-P33 iB85 Motherboard (S1150, DDR3, SATA II,SATA III,PS/2,USB2.0,USB3.0,LAN,audio Line-In,Audi

INTEL Pentium Processor G3420 (3.20GHz,512KB,3MB,54 W,1150) Box, Intel hd Graphics

Midi ATX Gamer Case Akyga AKY004BK, color, 12cm Fan, no PSU

Total: $580 Best Buy

This setup should probably serve you well for years. There’s some room for upgrades too, I guess—maybe adding another 4GB of RAM, an i5 processor, or a dedicated graphics card if you ever find you need one.

Alright, let's say we sort out the GPU... but which CPU are we actually talking about? I hope it isn't a single-core chip, because if it is, you might have to swap that out too.

Larry Ortiz5 said:Maybe just grab a GeForce GTX series for $571. You should be able to run all the new titles with that card.

p.s. What kind of power supply are you running?

I'm not totally sure, but I think a GeForce GTX series would be a better jump. The GeForce GTX series is slightly better than an HD 7850, which isn't actually that far off from a GeForce GTX series (basically an overclocked HD 7870).
RAM Upgrade Advice in Desktops ·
Yeah, they've jumped by about 100% compared to last year, mostly because of those floods hitting the factories...
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
Your motherboard isn't exactly built for heavy overclocking, so I wouldn't push things too far 😬

i7 3770K paired with a Noctua NH-D12... Asrock Z77 Extreme6... 8GB of RAM... some decent 600-700W modular power supply... maybe a GTX 780 Ti with a custom cooler once those arrive... case and HDD/SSD up to you😛
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
The GTX 660 Ti is basically equal to the R9 270X—maybe just a tiny bit stronger—while the GTX 760 sits slightly behind the R9 270X.
